Pseudoaneurysms of the external carotid artery of nontraumatic causes are very rare; those of infectious causes in adults are also quite unusual and are often preceded by bacteremia. Infection-related cases such as the one described here are scarce in the literature since the complication is not often calculated or expected. We present a case report of an elderly female patient who, after dental treatment and parotitis, noticed a mass behind the right mandible. After examination, the case was diagnosed as a pseudoaneurysm of the external carotid artery of an infectious cause. Management could

Cranial radiotherapy could cause several types of vasculopathies, which include atherosclerotic occlusive diseases, moyamoya disease, and aneurysm formation. To our knowledge, radiation-induced aneurysms of the internal carotid artery (ICA) are extremely rare. Here, we report a 68-year-old woman who presented with external ophthalmoplegia caused by radiotherapy after the transsphenoidal surgery for metastastic tumor of the clivus region, and the angiography demonstrated a giant aneurysm of the cavernous ICA. After the ICA ligation, the patient recovered well without brain ischemia with a 6-mon

Seizure is one of the most common stroke mimics occurring in patients referred to stroke services. Asymmetric enlargement of External Carotid Artery (ECA) branches and asymmetric enhancement of parotid and submandibular salivary glands seen on Computerized Tomography Angiography of the head and neck done for stroke evaluation are two imaging signs which may potentially help to differentiate seizure from stroke as well as point to the seizure laterality. In this case series, we describe five cases demonstrating these imaging findings in patients with suspected acute stroke who had CTA head and

A 44-year-old woman presented with recurrent episodes of thunderclap headache. Neurological examination and computed tomography brain imaging were unremarkable. Cerebrospinal fluid findings were consistent with subarachnoid hemorrhage. Computed tomography angiography of the circle of Willis showed multiple areas of segmental vasoconstriction. This finding was confirmed on cerebral catheter angiography, with segmental vasoconstriction involving bilateral internal carotid, posterior cerebral, and external carotid branches. No aneurysm or other vascular abnormality was identified. She received tr

Carotid artery pseudoaneurysms are detected most commonly after acute traumatic injuries to the head and neck. Pseudoaneurysms of the carotid artery are rare after blunt trauma. The most common site of injury occurs in the internal carotid artery with greater than 70 per cent of those injuries resulting from motor vehicle collisions. We report a case of external carotid artery pseudoaneurysm secondary to chronic arterial trauma. The patient presented with a one-week history of left ear pain and a pulsatile left neck mass. Radiologic studies revealed a 2.8-cm neck mass compatible with a pseudoa

Selective angiography of the external carotid artery and superselective angiography of single branches can be used for demonstration of blood supply of dural tumors, tumors of the skull, skull base and of facial parts of the skull. Especially malformations of vessels and their blood supply can be shown. Improvements in x-ray technique and apparatus enable movement angiography, which can be very helpful for the diagnosis of special changes. In special kinds of headache influences from outside to the external carotid artery, to the maxillary artery, to the ascending pharyngeal artery, to the pos

We have encountered 12 patients whose symptoms of transient ischemic attacks were due to total occlusion of the internal carotid artery with patency of the intracranial circulation being maintained by collateral circulation from the external carotid artery. In each case there was either tight stenosis or total occlusion at the origin of the external carotid artery. Eleven of the 12 patients were operated upon, receiving either thromboendarterectomy of the external carotid artery or a saphenous vein bypass to the patent distal portion of this artery. Ten of these 11 had complete or significant

BACKGROUND: External carotid artery (ECA) positioned laterally to the internal carotid artery (ICA) at the level of the common carotid artery (CCA) bifurcation is occasionally encountered during carotid endarterectomy (CEA). This study aimed to determine the frequency of this phenomenon and provide technical tips for performing CEA.
METHODS: The study included 199 consecutive patients (209 carotid arteries) who underwent CEA at Otaru Municipal Medical Center in 2007-2014. The position of the ECA with respect to the ICA at the CCA bifurcation was preoperatively rated as either lateral or norma

In order to calculate the percentage stenosis of an artery, the residual lumen and the normal dimensions at the site of stenosis must be known. Although the residual lumen can be measured directly from an arteriogram, the normal dimensions cannot in the presence of atherosclerotic narrowing. Most calculations of percentage stenosis are based on assumptions of what the true diameter of the vessel would have been before the onset of atheroma. Measurements of the diameter of the common, internal and external carotid arteries were made at standard sites in 61 normal arteriograms. There was a wide

From 1974-1986, 152 patients with carotid cavernous sinus fistulae (CCF) have been evaluated. Progressive closure of both dural and direct types of CCF have been noted utilizing intermittent external manual compression of the cervical carotid artery and jugular vein. In a group of 71 patients in whom this treatment was attempted, we have observed that 7 of 23 patients (30%) with dural CCF, and 8 of 48 patients (17%) with direct CCF had complete closure of their fistulae with no recurrence either clinically or at angiography done one year later. Closure occurred at varying times, from several m

Twenty-three patients with occlusion of an internal carotid artery have been followed 5 to 50 months after angiography. None had a later permanent stroke. Eight had delayed TIAs in the occluded internal carotid area, never in another area. In these TIAs the role of the homolateral external carotid artery is emphasized, because in the 8 cases this artery was the main collateral to the occluded internal carotid, and angiography had shown atheromatous stenosis of homolateral external/common carotid arteries or an irregular stump at the site of the occlusion. Hemodynamic and embolic mechanisms are

An examination of 33 patients with internal carotid occlusion showed that this was a group of grave patients who had suffered an ischemic stroke with the lesion localization in the basin of the carotids. By using additional examination methods it has been found that it is also the homolateral external carotid which performs (along with the contralateral internal carotid) the principal compensatory function in the revascularization of the stroke-affected hemisphere. In patients with the internal carotid occlusion complicated by a stenosis of the external and an affection of the general carotids

Medically refractory positional cerebral ischemia and concomitant orthostatic hypotension associated with chronic common carotid artery (CCA) occlusion are rare. The authors detail their experience with three cases treated exclusively by an extracranial bypass in which the thyrocervical trunk was used as the donor vessel. Postoperatively grafts were patent and symptoms resolved in all three patients, although orthostatic hypotension remained. Postural cerebral ischemia due to CCA occlusion can be treated by extracranial bypass surgery. The thyrocervical trunk is a suitable donor for reconstruc

The recent proliferation of endovascular treatment of carotid atherosclerotic disease will increase the number of patients who require treatment for recurrent carotid stenosis after angioplasty and stent placement. The optimal management of these patients has not yet been defined. We describe a 66-year-old woman who required 2 surgical procedures for recurrent in-stent carotid stenosis. She experienced numerous transient ischemic attacks 5 months after left extracranial internal carotid artery angioplasty and stenting for asymptomatic stenosis. Angiography showed high-grade in-stent restenosis

Variations in the vascular anatomy of the carotid triangle have been reported in current scientific literature. The carotid arteries, being the major feeding arteries of the head and neck deserve special importance and protection from iatrogenic injury during radiological evaluations and surgical interventions. The present study was carried out over a period of 4 years from 2012-2016 to assess the variant anatomy of external carotid artery. The external carotid artery and its branches were dissected bilaterally in 40 formalin embalmed cadavers. The external carotid artery was traced from its o

PURPOSE: To present illustrative cases that demonstrate the feasibility and clinical benefits of endovascular treatment of external carotid artery (ECA) stenoses in patients with occluded internal carotid arteries (ICA).
CASE REPORTS: Three patients with symptoms of cerebrovascular insufficiency and a stenosis of the ECA in the presence of occluded ICAs and diseased vertebral arteries were treated successfully by percutaneous stent or stent-graft implantation with and without cerebral protection.
CONCLUSIONS: The ECAs play an important role in providing collateral blood supply to the brain t
