Articaine provides a faster onset and longer duration of analgesia at lower supplemental injections compared to mepivacaine in third molar extractions.

PURPOSE: This study compared the anesthetic efficacy of mepivacaine and articaine in third molar extractions. METHODS: In this split-mouth, single-blind, randomized controlled trial, 36 patients underwent extraction of all four third molars. Each patient received two different local anesthetics: one side was anesthetized with 2% mepivacaine with epinephrine (1:100,000), and the other with 4% articaine with epinephrine (1:100,000). Anesthesia was administered using three cartridges per hemiarch to achieve analgesia for both maxillary and mandibular third molars. The number of supplemental anes

Articaine Infiltrations of the Mandibular Lateral Incisor-Is It Volume or Location of the Infiltrations That Affect Success? A Prospective, Randomized Crossover Study.

INTRODUCTION: A combination labial infiltration (1.8 mL) plus lingual infiltration (1.8 mL) of 4% articaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine in the mandibular lateral incisor was found superior to a labial infiltration of 1.8 mL of the same solution. However, it is not known whether the volume or the location had the greatest effect. Therefore, the purpose of this prospective, randomized crossover study was to determine the anesthetic efficacy of a labial infiltration of a 3.6 mL volume of 4% articaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine compared with labial infiltration (1.8 mL) plus lingual infiltration (1

Anesthetic efficacy of 4% articaine versus 2% lignocaine in root canal treatment of teeth with molar incisor hypomineralization.

CONTEXT: Inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) is considered the cornerstone in achieving anesthesia for mandibular molars. However, failure of routine lignocaine IANB to achieve profound anesthesia of the pulp has been reported in patients with molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH). Articaine 4% with epinephrine 1:100,000 has proven to provide total pain relief during most dental procedures. AIMS: This study aimed to assess and compare the pain perception level in children using Visual Analog Scale (VAS) during root canal treatment after administering 4% articaine buccal infiltration (BI), 4

[Experience of articaine use in surgical treatment of patients with whitlow].

UNLABELLED: The issue of the treatment of purulent-inflammatory conditions affecting the fingers is a significant one, given the high prevalence of such cases, with up to 1.5 million instances reported annually in our country. The results of surgical treatment are frequently unsatisfactory, particularly in regard to functional indices, even in cases of mild soft tissue injury. The primary determinant of successful whitlow treatment is adequate anaesthesia, which enables the performance of high-quality surgical wound treatment. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a comparative analysis of the efficacy of lo

What's new in local anaesthesia?

In this paper I have explored four areas of current interest to pain control in dentistry. Articaine HCl, the most recent addition to the dental LA armamentarium, has become a favoured drug in many, if not most, countries in which it is available. Rapid onset and improved hard- and soft-tissue penetration enable articaine HCl to be administered with great success as a mandibular infiltration, precluding the need, in most situations, to employ it by inferior alveolar nerve block. The 'question' about an increased risk of paresthesia following articaine administration via IANB has been answered

[The influence of different local anaesthetics on the viability of preadipocytes].

BACKGROUND: Autogenous fat transfer with lipoinjection for soft-tissue augmentation is a commonly used technique in plastic surgery. The efficiency of this technique has often been discussed and authors still describe very different results after autologous fat transplantation. The purpose of our investigations was to evaluate the effect of the various local anaesthetics, used in the region of harvesting, on the viability of preadipocytes. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Preadipocytes were isolated from human subcutaneous adipose tissue samples and incubated with lidocaine, prilocaine, articaine + epine

Modified Mylohyoid Nerve Anesthesia/Block With 4% Articaine and Dexamethasone Versus Halstead's IANB With 2% Lidocaine in Mandibular Molar Surgery: A Comparative Analysis of Efficacy and Safety Outcomes.

BACKGROUND The Halstead inferior alveolar nerve block (IANB) is the standard local anesthetic method for mandibular dental procedures, but it can fail due to anatomic variations. A modified mylohyoid anesthesia (MMA) block can be used as a supplemental injection technique for the surrounding tissues. Therefore, this study included patients undergoing mandibular molar surgery and aimed to compare outcomes following a modified mylohyoid nerve block with 4% articaine with epinephrine and dexamethasone, 4% articaine with epinephrine, and 2% lidocaine with epinephrine. Ocular complications associated with local anesthesia administration in dentistry.

The most widely used method for controlling pain during dental procedures is the intraoral administration of local anesthetics in close proximity to a specific nerve or fiber to obtund nerve conduction. The most commonly anesthetized nerves in dentistry are branches or nerve trunks associated with the maxillary and mandibular divisions of the trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V). However, other nerves may be inadvertently affected by intraoral local anesthesia injections, resulting in anesthetic complications of structures far from the oral cavity. Practitioners should be aware of potential ocul

[Comparative efficiency of local anesthetics from the group of complex amides during therapeutic stomatological interventions].

The efficiency of infiltration, conduction, and intraligamental anesthesia with different drugs for dental interventions was evaluated in 331 patients without concomitant somatic diseases. The efficiency of local anesthesia depends primarily on the drug; other essential factors are the route of this drug administration and type of intervention in the oral cavity. The most effective of the studied anesthetics was 4% artisane with epinephrine 1:100,000; 3% prolocaine with epinephrine 1:100,000 ranked second. These anesthetics maximally realized their effects at intraligamental injection during t

Effects of articaine on [3H]noradrenaline release from cortical and spinal cord slices prepared from normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats and compared to lidocaine.

Since a significant proportion of diabetic patients have clinical or subclinical neuropathy, there may be concerns about the use of local anaesthetics. The present study was designed to determine and compare the effects of articaine, a widely used anaesthetic in dental practice, and lidocaine on the resting and axonal stimulation-evoked release of [3H]noradrenaline ([3H]NA) in prefrontal cortex slices and the release of [3H]NA in spinal cord slices prepared from non-diabetic and streptozocin (STZ)-induced diabetic (glucose level=22.03±2.31mmol/l) rats. The peak of allodynia was achieved 9 week

Concentration-dependent neurotoxicity of articaine: an electrophysiological and stereological study of the rat sciatic nerve.

BACKGROUND: We performed this study to quantify the detrimental effect of intraneural injection of 50 μL of saline, articaine 2%, or articaine 4% in the rat sciatic nerve. METHODS: Lumbar-evoked electrospinograms from stimulation of the sciatic nerve were recorded before and immediately after injection and again after 3 weeks. Test substance was injected into the right sciatic nerve, and the untreated left sciatic nerve served as control. The animals were killed after the 3-week follow-up, and cross-sections of the sciatic nerve were examined stereologically. RESULTS: The evoked spinal cord

Necrosis of the skin of the chin: a possible complication of inferior alveolar nerve block injection.

BACKGROUND: The literature describes different local complications derived from a local anesthetic. The authors present a report of a case of such a complication-a complication of which they have identified only one other similar case in the literature. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 10-year-old girl received an inferior alveolar nerve block injection for a dental restoration on the right side. After the procedure, she developed pallor of the right side of the lower lip and chin that subsequently evolved into a surface ulceration. The lesion suddenly healed 15 days later.
