Attributable risk in men in two French case-control studies on mesothelioma and asbestos.

Pleural mesothelioma is a primary tumor of the pleura that is mainly due to asbestos exposure. To study the relationship between mesothelioma and occupational asbestos exposure in France, two case-control studies (A and B) were conducted. A substantial difference in the attributable risk in the population (AR(p)) was observed among men: 44.5% (95% CI: [32.6-56.4]) in study A and 83.2% (95% CI: [76.8-89.6]) in study B. As different exposure assessment expert methods were used, the main objective of this work was to re-estimate the AR(p) men in two case-control studies according to a common stan

Comparing strategies for evaluation of candidate genes in case-control studies using family data.

The goal of this analysis is to compare different test strategies for genetic association in case-control studies using related individuals. The first test is the trend test that is corrected for related individuals on the basis of identity-by-descent information. The second approach is to use generalized estimating equations to adjust for the correlation between relatives, and the third is the multiple outputation method. We compare the power of these test strategies in a simulation study, and apply these methods to a candidate gene dataset of Genetic Analysis Workshop 15 from the North Ameri

Human leukocyte antigens and susceptibility to tuberculosis: a meta-analysis of case-control studies.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between human leukocyte antigens (HLA) of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and thoracic tuberculosis (TB) in immunocompetent adults. DESIGN: We searched Medline, Pascal, Pascal Biomed and Francis databases (all years) with the terms 'tuberculosis' and 'HLA'. Case-control studies were included that reported frequencies for the full range of antigens analysed by serological methods in healthy controls and adult patients not treated with glucocorticoids or immunosuppressive drugs, human immunodeficiency virus status negative or not reported, no de

Testicular cancer and cryptorchidism in relation to prenatal factors: case-control studies in Denmark.

To explore prenatal risk factors that are common to testicular cancer and cryptorchidism, two parallel case-control studies were conducted in Denmark. Information about characteristics of the mother, the pregnancy, and the birth were obtained from the mothers of cases and controls, using a mailed self-administered questionnaire. A maternal age above 30 years was associated with odds ratios (OR) of 1.9 (95 percent confidence interval [CI] = 1.2-3.0) for cryptorchidism and 2.0 (CI = 1.2-3.6) for testicular seminoma; the latter effect was particularly high when the boy was the first child of the

Logistic regression in case-control studies: the effect of using independent as dependent variables.

In case-control studies, cases are sampled separately from controls. In such studies the primary analysis concerns the estimation of the effect of covariables on being a case or a control. To explore causal pathways, further secondary analysis could concern the relationships among the covariables. In this paper the validity of such secondary analysis is addressed. In particular, the use of multiple logistic regression in case-control studies where the dependent variable is not the case/control indicator is explored. It is shown that only under very restrictive conditions will sample regression

Medications influencing the risk of fall-related injuries in older adults: case-control and case-crossover design studies.

BACKGROUND: Medications influencing the risk of fall-related injuries (FRIs) in older adults have been inconsistent in previous guidelines. This study employed case-control design to assess the association between FRIs and medications, and an additional case-crossover design was conducted to examine the consistency of the associations and the transient effects of the medications on FRIs. METHODS: This study was conducted using a national claims database (2002-2015) in Korea. Older adults (≥ 65 years) who had their first FRI between 2007 and 2015 were matched with non-cases in 1:2 ratio. Drug

The CAPER studies: five case-control studies aimed at identifying and quantifying the risk of cancer in symptomatic primary care patients.

BACKGROUND: This paper reviews the background to five primary care case-control studies, collectively known as the CAPER studies (Cancer Prediction in Exeter). These studies, on colorectal, lung, prostate and brain tumours, sought to identify the particular features of cancer as reported to primary care. They also sought to quantify the risk of cancer for symptoms and primary care investigations, both individually and paired together. METHODS: Two studies were on colorectal cancer: the former with 349 cases used hand searching and coding of entries, while the latter obtained 6442 cases from a

Blunted Niacin Skin Flushing Response in Mood Disorders: A Meta-Analysis of Case-Control Studies.

BACKGROUND: Mood disorders (MDs), including depressive disorder (DD) and bipolar disorder (BD), represent a major global health burden, yet the absence of objective biomarkers has persistently hindered their accurate clinical diagnosis. The niacin skin flushing response (NSFR) has shown promise as a potential biomarker; however, inconsistencies in diagnostic efficacy and response characteristics across studies have limited its utility. This meta-analysis aims to systematically evaluate the NSFR in MD patients to address these discrepancies. METHODS: A comprehensive search of PubMed, Embase, C

Occupational Benzene Exposure and Lung Cancer Risk: A Pooled Analysis of 14 Case-Control Studies.

Rationale: Benzene has been classified as carcinogenic to humans, but there is limited evidence linking benzene exposure to lung cancer. Objectives: We aimed to examine the relationship between occupational benzene exposure and lung cancer. Methods: Subjects from 14 case-control studies across Europe and Canada were pooled. We used a quantitative job-exposure matrix to estimate benzene exposure. Logistic regression models assessed lung cancer risk across different exposure indices. We adjusted for smoking and five main occupational lung carcinogens and stratified analyses by smoking status and

Residential Radon and Histological Types of Lung Cancer: A Meta-Analysis of Case‒Control Studies.

Epidemiological studies on residential radon exposure and the risk of histological types of lung cancer have yielded inconsistent results. We conducted a meta-analysis on this topic and updated previous related meta-analyses. We searched the databases of Cochrane Library, Embase, PubMed, Web of Science and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure for papers published up to 13 November 2018. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using fixed and random effects models. Subgroup and dose‒response analyses were also conducted. Individual and household exposures associated with cholera transmission in case-control studies: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Uncertainty persists regarding cholera transmission routes. We conducted a structured review of case-control studies on cholera transmission and provide a qualitative summary of reported exposures in order to inform public health efforts and future cholera research. METHODS: We searched two electronic databases for published case-control studies that investigated risk factors for cholera and included any publications that did not match our exclusion criteria. From the included studies, we grouped exposures using two parameters, whether transmission domain was public or domestic, an

Association between bullous pemphigoid and psoriasis: Systematic review and meta-analysis of case-control studies.

Several case reports and cohort studies have recently investigated the potential association between bullous pemphigoid (BP) and psoriasis. It has been speculated that chronic inflammation in the dermo-epidermal junction can trigger exposure to antigens to autoreactive T cells, resulting in autoimmune blistering disease. However, the association described has been inconsistently reported amongst studies. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigation this potential association. We identified four case-control studies for inclusion in the present meta-analysis, with a total

Sensitivity of self-reported opioid use in case-control studies: Healthy individuals versus hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Several case-control studies have shown associations between the risk of different cancers and self-reported opium use. Inquiring into relatively sensitive issues, such as the history of drug use, is usually prone to information bias. However, in order to justify the findings of these types of studies, we have to quantify the level of such a negative bias. In current study, we aimed to evaluate sensitivity of self-reported opioid use and suggest suitable types of control groups for case-control studies on opioid use and the risk of cancer. METHODS: In order to compare the validity

Case-control studies on the relationship between onchocerciasis and epilepsy: systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: A systematic review and meta-analysis of all available case-control studies on the relationship between onchocerciasis and epilepsy. Because age and level of onchocerciasis endemicity in the area of residence are major determinants for infection, an additional analysis was performed, restricted to studies achieving control of these confounding factors. DATA SOURCES: Medical databases, the "African Neurology Database, Institute of Neuroepidemiology and Tropical Neurology, Limoges," reference lists of relevant articles, commercial search engines, up to May 2012. Results of case-control studies support the association between contact lens use and Acanthamoeba keratitis.

BACKGROUND: Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) is ever more frequently reported in industrialized countries. The loss of the corneal surface integrity consequent to secondary microtrauma produced by the use of contact lens (CL) favors the penetration of the parasite into the corneal tissue. OBJECTIVES: A scientific review was performed to investigate the association of CL wear as an Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) risk factor. METHODS: A computerized screening of 7834 Medline articles (4623 from PubMed; 3211 from Scopus) used a strict selection criteria of case-control studies involving CL wear and/or
