BACKGROUND: To quantify the incidence of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) infections and to describe the influence of clinical characteristics, including dwell time, on risk.
METHODS: Meta-synthesis of 18 prospective studies (16 randomized controlled trials and two prospective cohort studies) reporting PIVC infections. In total, 14,606 PIVCs (50,096 device-days) were studied from insertion to removal in seven Australian government hospitals. PIVC care was provided by clinical staff with daily follow up by research nurses. We calculated incidences and rates of local infection (without bl

BACKGROUND: Despite pervasive need for peripheral intravenous catheters, insertion is often difficult, and approximately two thirds fail prematurely. Midline catheters are an alternative long peripheral catheter, inserted in the upper arm, ideal for patients with difficult access.
AIM: The aim of this study is to test feasibility of the protocol and compare the efficacy and safety of midline catheters to peripheral intravenous catheters.
DESIGN: A parallel-group, pilot randomized controlled trial of adult medical/surgical hospitalized patients, from a single Australian referral hospital.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Urethral dilation in the setting of difficult urethral catheterization is sometimes necessary to avoid suprapubic catheterization. Anecdotally, we have observed that less dilation is needed when advancing a silicone catheter over a Glidewire compared with a latex catheter of the same size. Our aim was to quantify the difference in the resistance to buckling between silicone and latex catheters.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A BOSE Electroforce load testing device was used to test 12F and 16F silicone and latex catheters under tensile and compressive forces. This information w

BACKGROUND: Peripherally inserted central venous catheters (PICC) have been proposed as an alternative to central venous catheters (CVC). The aim of this study was to determine the thrombosis rate in relation to PICC placement in patients discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU).
METHODS: Data of patients admitted to the ICU (Careggi Teaching Hospital, Florence, Italy; January-August 2008) and discharged with a central venous device were sequentially studied. During the first 4 months, CVCs were used (CVC group), whereas during the last 4 months, PICCs were used (PICC group). Demographic

Central venous catheters (CVCs) are traditionally used for central venous access in the intensive care unit setting. Use of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) now often extends into the intensive care unit. The goal of this review is to compare the use and safety of PICCs vs CVCs in burn patients. This institutional review board-approved cohort review included all burn patients at a single center who received one or more PICCs during a 2-year period. Primary outcome was number of days each line remained in place. Secondary outcomes were catheter-related bloodstream infection (CR-B

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the patient experience with urinary catheters or peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs). We sought to better understand patient perspectives on having a urinary catheter or a PICC by reviewing open-ended comments made by patients about having either of these 2 devices.
METHODS: As part of a larger study, we asked patients about certain catheter-related complications at the time of catheter placement and on days 14, 30, and 70 (PICCs only). In this larger project, we performed a structured assessment that included an open-ended question about other co

The aim of this study was to compare the maximum urethral closure pressure (MUCP) measures with two different techniques: water perfused catheter and microtip transducer catheters with respect to reproducibility and comparability for urethral pressure measurements. Eighteen women with stress urinary incontinence had repeat static urethral pressure profilometry on a different day using a dual microtip transducer and water perfused catheter (Brown and Wickham). The investigators were blinded to the results of the other. The microtip measurements were taken in the 45 degrees upright sitting posit

OBJECTIVES: To compare the mini-midline catheters (Mini-MCs) and peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) in hospitalized children with digestive system diseases.
METHODS: In this study, children received either an 8-cm Mini-MC or a 24-gauge PIVC based on patient or guardian preference. Catheter outcomes, including dwell time, complications, and unplanned removal, were monitored during the indwelling period.
RESULTS: Sixty-four children received Mini-MCs and 61 received PIVCs. Median dwell time was significantly longer in the Mini-MC group (94 hours; Z = -4.37, P < .01). Kaplan-Meier analysi

OBJECTIVES: Tension pneumothorax (tPTX) is the third leading cause of preventable death on the battlefield. Needle thoracostomy (NT) is the standard prehospital treatment; however, the optimal catheter characteristics are unknown. This study compares the efficacy of NT using 3.25-inch 14ga and 3.25-inch 10ga, non-fenestrated and fenestrated catheters in a tPTX model.
METHODS: This was a non-randomized, non-blinded study using fresh, unembalmed, never frozen, human cadavers. Tension pneumothorax was induced by air insufflation to 15 mmHg through a 10ga pleural catheter. The tPTX was then relea

BACKGROUND Intravenous calcium supplements are often required following parathyroidectomy to avoid postoperative hypocalcaemia. The aim of this study was to compare application effect of a femoral central venous catheter (CVC) and peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) on intravenous calcium supplements after parathyroidectomy. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the hospital records of 73 patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism who underwent a successful parathyroidectomy at the Huashan Hospital attached to Fudan University between 1 April 2011 and 1 February 2016. RESULTS Of the 7

INTRODUCTION: Pulmonary artery catheters are used widely in cardiac surgery despite observed associations with worse outcomes and guidelines that recommend against their routine use. No adequately powered randomised trials are available.
METHODS: The PUMA Pilot was a multicentre, randomised, parallel assignment, open-label, pilot and feasibility trial conducted at three tertiary cardiac surgery centres. Eligible patients were adults undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting, aortic valve replacement or surgery on the aortic root or ascending aorta with or without aortic valve replacement, wi

Infection, thrombosis, and stenosis are among the most frequent complications associated with blood contacting catheters. Because these problems are usually related to surface properties of the base catheter material, surface treatment processes, such as ion implantation and ion beam assisted deposition (silver based coatings), can be used to mitigate such complications. Because these ion beam based processes affect only the near-surface region (approximately the outer 1 microm), there is little effect on bulk material properties. This study evaluated silver coated large bore catheters used fo

Patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis encounter significant challenges in care coordination and experience higher complication rates. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an evidence-based alternative that significantly improves patients' quality of life.Peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion methods include open surgical, laparoscopic, peritoneoscopic, and percutaneous image-guided approaches. Despite comparable success rates and cost-effectiveness, the US healthcare system underutilizes the percutaneous method. This article aims to provide an overview of the essential component

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether 4-Fr percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is associated with technical difficulties that might have an unfavorable impact on procedural parameters.
BACKGROUND: Four-Fr PCI is often associated with difficulties in catheter manipulation, which may lead to greater time consumption and increased dye usage when compared with PCI employing larger guiding catheters.
METHODS: From July 2007 to March 2009, 62 patients underwent 4-Fr PCI. Procedural characteristics were compared between patients who underwent 4-Fr PCI in 2007 (early phase: 31 lesions in 2

The use of tunneled dialysis catheters to deliver hemodialysis treatment may be associated with major problems. For this reason their use should be minimized as much as possible. Infection is the most serious of these problems. This complication causes very significant morbidity and mortality and has emerged as the primary barrier to long-term catheter use. Bacteremia is the most serious type of infection associated with catheter use. It can result in metastatic infection and even lead to death of the patient. Prophylaxis is important to decrease the risk of infection. The use of an antibiotic

OBJECTIVE: To review the evidence on the effectiveness of hydrophilic catheters for patients requiring intermittent catheterization.
CLINICAL NEED: There are various reasons why a person would require catheterization, including surgery, urinary retention due to enlargement of the prostate, spinal cord injuries, or other physical disabilities. Urethral catheters are the most prevalent cause of nosocomial urinary tract infections, that is, those that start or occur in a hospital. A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria adheres to the opening of the urethra. Most infections arise fr
