Volumetric comparisons in the cerebellar complex of anthropoids, with special reference to locomotor types.

Seven measurements in the cerebellar complex were completed on 45 individuals, including 26 species of anthropoids from Stephan's collection. These included 12 species of New World monkeys, 10 species of Old World monkeys, and Hylobates, Gorilla, Pan, and humans. The measurements were the volume of medial (fastigial) (CM), interpositus (globose and emboliform) (CI), and lateral (dentate) (CL) cerebellar nuclei, ventral pons (VPo), inferior olivary principal (OLIPr), and accessory (OLIAc) nuclei and vestibular nuclear complex (VES). The relative size of each nucleus was expressed in size indice

Sexual selection and canine dimorphism in New World monkeys.

Social and ecological factors are important in shaping sexual dimorphism in Anthropoidea, but there is also a tendency for body-size dimorphism and canine dimorphism to increase with increased body size (Rensch's rule) (Rensch: Evolution Above the Species Level. London: Methuen, 1959.) Most ecologist interpret Rensch's rule to be a consequence of social and ecological selective factors that covary with body size, but recent claims have been advanced that dimorphism is principally a consequence of selection for increased body size alone. Here we assess the effects of body size, body-size dimorp

Connections between area 3b of the somatosensory cortex and subdivisions of the ventroposterior nuclear complex and the anterior pulvinar nucleus in squirrel monkeys.

The goal of this study was to determine whether somatosensory thalamic nuclei other than the ventroposterior nucleus proper (VP) have connections with area 3b of the postcentral cortex in squirrel monkeys. Small injections of the anatomical tracers wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to horseradish peroxidase (WGA-HRP) or 3H-proline were placed in electrophysiologically identified representations of body parts. The results indicate that, besides the well-established somatotopically organized connections with VP, area 3b has connections with three other nuclei of the somatosensory thalamus: the ve

Induction of transmission-blocking immunity in Aotus monkeys by vaccination with a Plasmodium vivax clinical grade PVS25 recombinant protein.

Aotus monkeys were used to determine the immunogenicity of Pvs25 protein expressed in the zygote/ookinete surface. Animals were immunized in three times with 100 microg of Pvs25 formulated in Montanide ISA-720. Antibodies to Pvs25 detected by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay appeared by day 30 after the first immunization, with a peak of antibodies levels on day 150. These antibodies were still detectable on day 300. Plasma samples on day 150 from experimental group were able to completely block the development of the parasite in Anopheles albimanus mosquitoes artificially fed with human i

Effect of polymorphic colour vision for fruit detection in the spider monkey Ateles geoffroyi, and its implications for the maintenance of polymorphic colour vision in platyrrhine monkeys.

Most platyrrhine monkeys have an X-linked tri-allelic polymorphism for medium and long wavelength (M/L) sensitive cone photopigments. These pigments' sensitivity maxima (lambdamax) range from 535 to 562 nm. All animals also have an autosomally coded short-wavelength-sensitive (S) cone pigment. In populations with three M/L alleles there are six different colour vision phenotypes. Heterozygous females have trichromatic colour vision, while males and homozygous females are dichromats. The selective basis for this polymorphism is not understood, but is probably affected by the costs and benefits

Transmission of human spongiform encephalopathies to experimental animals: comparison of the chimpanzee and squirrel monkey.

The agents of kuru and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease have been consistently transmitted from patients with those diseases to chimpanzees and squirrel monkeys, as well as to other new-world primates, with average incubation periods of two or three years. No other animals have been found so consistently susceptible to the agents in human tissues. More rapid and convenient assays for the infectious agents would greatly facilitate research on the spongiform encephalopathies of humans.

Transmission and scanning electron microscopy of spongiform change in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Brains from three human cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and three monkey cases of transmitted Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease were examined. Spongiform change was present in all cases on both light and electron microscopic examination. Electron microscopic examination revealed membrane alterations within vacuoles in all cases. On SEM, both ulcerated and focally thickened membranes were apparent; TEM revealed splitting of unit membranes as well as focally thickened amorphous membranes. Small blisters with 70 to 150 nm particulates were seen on membranes in SEM. TEM revealed 10 nm electron-dense pa

Intracerebral infection of Cebus apella with the XJ-Clone 3 strain of Junín virus.

To assess the usefulness of the South American primate Cebus apella as a model for neurovirulence of Junín virus, eight monkeys were inoculated with 10(5) LD50 of the attenuated XJ-Clone 3 Junín virus strain by the intrathalamic route. After the second week, weight loss and polyadenopathies were observed in most animals, one-half of which had a transient leukothrombocytopenia. Moderate clinical central nervous system (CNS) involvement was present in four of eight monkeys, while the rest had only mild neurologic signs. All recovered except one, which developed a deep coma and was killed in a pr

Comparison of the primate alphaherpesviruses. I. Characterization of two herpesviruses from spider monkeys and squirrel monkeys and viral polypeptides synthesized in infected cells.

Biological and biochemical properties of two neurotropic herpesviruses of New World monkeys--Herpesvirus saimiri type 1 (HVS-1) and Herpesvirus ateles type 1 (HVA-1)--were examined and compared. HVS-1 and HVA-1 both exhibited a time course of replication similar to another primate herpesvirus, SA 8. Both viruses grew rapidly and high titers of infectious virus were readily produced. HVS-1 and HVA-1 were also able to replicate efficiently in cell lines derived from a number of primate and non-primate species. Analysis of proteins synthesized in infected cells revealed the presence of over 30 vi

Morphologic, karyotypic, and molecular evidence of a new form of Chiropotes (primates, pitheciinae).

Morphologic, karyotypic, and molecular analyses were carried out in 25 specimens of a distinct morph of Chiropotes (henceforth termed Chiropotes sp.) obtained from a number of localities in the Brazilian Amazon. Pelage coloration clearly distinguishes the collected specimens and all other known species of this genus. A distinct karyotype was described for Chiropotes sp. It differs from C. satanas chiropotes by two pericentric inversions, and from C. satanas utahicki by three, which suggests that these taxa are reproductively isolated. Morphometric analyses did not show significant differentiat

Studies on the evolution of multiple somatosensory representations in primates: the organization of anterior parietal cortex in the New World Callitrichid, Saguinus.

Because members of the New World family, Callithricidae, are generally regarded as the most primitive of monkeys, we studied the organization of somatosensory cortex in the tamarin (Saguinus) in hopes of better understanding differences in the organization of anterior parietal cortex in primates and how these differences relate to phylogeny. In most prosimian primates only one complete representation of cutaneous receptors has been found in the region of primary cortex, S-I, while in all Old and New World monkeys studied to date, two cutaneous representations exist in distinct architectonic fi

High plasma steroid levels in the squirrel monkey: deficient receptors or metabolism?

Many New World primates such as the squirrel monkey have extraordinarily high plasma steroid hormone levels as compared to humans and Old World primates. To clarify the mechanism(s) underlying this apparent steroid resistance, glucocorticoid and androgen binding to putative receptors in genital skin fibroblasts from several species was investigated. Differences in either affinity and/or number of binding sites were found but these were small compared to the very large differences in total or free plasma steroid concentrations between Old and New World primate species. In contrast, when the abi

CCR5 chemokine receptor gene evolution in New World monkeys (Platyrrhini, Primates): implication on resistance to lentiviruses.

The CC chemokine receptor 5 (CCR5) gene of primates encodes a transmembrane protein involved in cellular signaling of some cell types of the immune system. Numerous studies have shown that this peptide is used by lentiviruses in conjunction with the CD4 receptor to mediate binding and entry in target cells of human and non-human primates. New World monkeys (NWM), differently from their African counterparts, have no description of in natura lentivirus infection. Some evidences suggest that a blockage occurs at the viral entry step of infection. To investigate this possibility, we have cloned an

Limited Evidence for Infection of Urban and Peri-urban Nonhuman Primates with Zika and Chikungunya Viruses in Brazil.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Zika virus (ZIKV) emerged in the Americas in 2013. Limited antigenic variability of CHIKV and ZIKV may restrict urban transmission cycles due to population protective immunity. In Africa, sylvatic transmission cycles involving nonhuman primates (NHP) are known for CHIKV and ZIKV, causing cyclic reemergence in humans. To evaluate whether sylvatic cycles can be expected in Latin America, we tested 207 NHP collected between 2012 and 2017 in urban and peri-urban settings in Brazil for infection with ZIKV and CHIKV. No animal tested positive for viral RNA in genus-spec

Trypanosoma cruzi in Brazilian Amazonia: Lineages TCI and TCIIa in wild primates, Rhodnius spp. and in humans with Chagas disease associated with oral transmission.

In this study, we provide phylogenetic and biogeographic evidence that the Trypanosoma cruzi lineages T. cruzi I (TCI) and T. cruzi IIa (TCIIa) circulate amongst non-human primates in Brazilian Amazonia, and are transmitted by Rhodnius species in overlapping arboreal transmission cycles, sporadically infecting humans. TCI presented higher prevalence rates, and no lineages other than TCI and TCIIa were found in this study in wild monkeys and Rhodnius from the Amazonian region. We characterised TCI and TCIIa from wild primates (16 TCI and five TCIIa), Rhodnius spp. (13 TCI and nine TCIIa), and h

Species-specific transformation of T cells by HV(MNE).

HV(MNE) is an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-like lymphocryptovirus (LCV) originally isolated from a Macaca nemestrina with CD8(+) T cell mycosis fungoides/cutaneous T cell lymphoma (Blood 98 (2001), 2193). HV(MNE) transforms rabbit T cells in vitro and causes T cell lymphoma in New Zealand white rabbits. Here we demonstrate that HV(MNE) also immortalizes T cells from mustached tamarins but not those from owl monkeys, common marmosets, squirrel monkeys, black-capped capuchins, and humans. Cytogenetic and FACS analysis revealed the true origin and T cell lineage of the transformed tamarin T cell line
