Neutropenic typhlitis is an acute inflammation of the cecum occurring in neutropenic patients. Two cases are described, both presenting typical features of the disease. It is our experience that the treatment approach should consist of bowel rest, fluid therapy, and massive administration of broad spectrum antibiotics. In some cases, full recovery will follow. If abdominal signs persist, surgery should be deferred until hematologic convalescence occurs. At this time, cecostomy and drainage should be adequate. Only in very severe cases, with wide-spread necrosis, should a right hemicolectomy be

Stomal prolapse is a common complication of colostomies and, if severe, may affect the timing of the definitive procedure. A simple technique for postreduction bowel fixation without stomal revision is presented. The reduced bowel is attached to the parietal peritoneum using a "U" type suture a few centimeters from the stoma. Two short parallel segments of latex tubing prevent the thread from cutting through. Suture and bolsters are removed when adhesions are established. In one of the four children, a percutaneous cecostomy was employed to connect a prolapse of the entire proximal colon.

OBJECTIVE: To assess outcomes of children with functional constipation after antegrade continence enemas (ACEs) and determine if pre operative anorectal manometry (AMAN) findings, including dyssynergic defecation, are associated with outcomes.
METHODS: A retrospective review of pediatric patients with functional constipation who received a Malone appendicostomy or cecostomy after failed medical management was conducted. Patients were included if they had AMAN data prior to their operation. Patients that underwent colonic resection were excluded. Demographics, clinical characteristics, manomet

BACKGROUND: We compared patient- and family-reported overall and stool-related quality of life (QoL) before and after an antegrade continence enema (ACE) procedure (cecostomy tube insertion) for refractory chronic constipation or fecal incontinence (CCFI). We hypothesized that patients with functional diagnoses experience similar improvements in QoL compared to those with organic diagnoses.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of patients undergoing cecostomy tube insertion for CCFI at a tertiary pediatric hospital from 2012 to 2019. Patients and/or primary caregivers completed validated

A 9-year-old boy, with previous anorectal malformation and neuropathic bladder and bowel, underwent ileocystoplasty, Monti-Mitrofanoff and appendix antegrade colonic enema procedure. The tip of the macroscopically normal appendix was sent for routine histopathology. Microscopy demonstrated a 5-mm well-differentiated neuroendocrine tumor extending into muscularis propria. K i -67 index was <2%. Due to margin involvement, the appendix conduit and surrounding skin were re-excised and a tube cecostomy was created through a separate incision. Microscopy revealed no residual neuroendocrine tumor, an

Cecal volvulus is a malrotational abnormality of the intestine that causes obstruction. Diagnosis is difficult and, if delayed, the results may be intestinal ischemia, perforation, sepsis, and even death. Cecal ischemia or gangrene cannot always be determined from physical and laboratory findings. Although not always conclusive, contrast radiography may be helpful; however, laparotomy is often required for definitive diagnosis and therapy. If vascular compromise of the cecum is found, right hemicolectomy is the treatment of choice. In the absence of ischemia, decompressive tube cecostomy, simp

Acute ileocecal volvulus is a condition of the abdomen which requires emergency treatment and is currently managed by several methods with a mortality rate of 25%. Surgical options include detorsion, cecostomy for nongangrenous volvulus or resection when gangrene is present. We studied the mortality and recurrence rate of ileocecal volvulus. This retrospective analysis evaluated 16 patients who underwent operation at Belen Hospital, Trujillo, Peru, between January 1966 and August 1992. As of August 1992, median follow-up was 160 months for 13 surviving patients (range, 6 to 307 months). Eleven

Cecal volvulus is an uncommon cause of large-bowel obstruction. Its developement is due to an abnormal mobility of the ileocecal loop because of lacking attachement of ascending colon. Clinical features are frequently aspecific and should be differentiated from sigmoid volvulus and neoplastic obstruction. Therapy depends on visceral circulatory conditions at the moment of diagnosis. Possible options include endoscopic decompression, cecopexy with or without cecostomy, right colectomy with immediate or delayed anastomosis. The present paper reports the case of cecal volvulus in a 44 year old wo

INTRODUCTION: Although orthotopic reconstruction has become the preferred form of lower urinary tract reconstruction after cystectomy there remains a select group of patients who are not appropriate for an orthotopic neobladder substitute. A continent cutaneous reservoir provides an alternative means to store urine and protect the upper urinary tract without the need for a urostomy appliance. We report our surgical technique of a continent cutaneous right colon reservoir using a catheterizable submucosally embedded appendicostomy.
TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS: The continent cutaneous right colon

Ogilvie's Syndrome is defined as acute distension of the colon without any mechanical obstruction. We reported two new cases who underwent surgical treatment and the revision of the literature. Four hundred eight-six cases are described until now. The physiopathology is unknown. The diagnosis is done with abdominal x-ray, barium enema must be used with attention. The more frequent symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. The perforation of the colon is possible with a diameter of 9-12 cm. The mortality was 11.3% in two hundred ninety patients (59.6%) who underwent conservat

BACKGROUND: An option for medically refractory fecal incontinence and/or constipation is the antegrade continence enema (ACE). We investigated ACE usage and its perceptions, including whether patients were able to discontinue use of the appendicostomy/cecostomy tube.
METHODS: Patients who underwent appendicostomy creation or cecostomy tube placement at two institutions between 2012 and 2021 were reviewed. Patients or parents/guardians were contacted for completion of a survey. Summary statistics for clinical data were tabulated and associations were evaluated with chi-square analysis.

Colonic volvulus is an important entity to consider in any pregnant patient with abdominal pain. X-ray and colonoscopy can be useful to obtain the earliest diagnosis, leading to surgical intervention if necessary. Limited use of x-rays with shielding of the fetus is of minimal risk and useful for early diagnosis of volvulus. Colonoscopy may confirm or exclude the diagnosis of colonic volvulus, detect mucosal ischemia, and avoid the requirement for emergency surgery by reducing the volvulus in cases in which ischemia is not present. If surgery is necessary for a cecal volvulus, cecostomy is a v

Cecal distention due to pseudo-obstruction of the left colon may result in perforation or necrosis of the right colon with catastrophic consequences. This problem occurs in people who are ill from other causes; therefore, the mortality and morbidity is high in Ogilvie's syndrome whether treated operatively or nonoperatively. The treatment of choice has been tube cecostomy when cecal diameter exceeds 12 cm on supine films. Fiberoptic colonoscopy has provided a new treatment modality for this condition. The cecum can be decompressed safely in most cases. Recurrent distention can be avoided by tr

The results of treatment for volvulus of the colon during 13 years in a community hospital are analysed, It is concluded that sigmoid volvulus should be treated with proctoscopic examination and insertion of a rectal tube, unless signs of gangreana or peritonitis are present. In patients without accompanying sever diseases, elective resection should be performed later. Repeated tube decompressions should be attempted in patients with recurrence and high operative risk. Unsuccessful tube decompressions or signs of a non-viable colon should be followed by emergence laparotomy and, probably, rese

The authors make a critical analysis of indications for temporary derivations, and for "d'emblée" resection in the emergency surgery of the colon. This study is based on a series of 267 cases where emergency surgery was necessary for various conditions of the colon. All were operated in the I-st Clinic of Surgery from Craiova. The authors stress the inefficiency of cecostomy for the solution of occlusions due to neoplasms of the colon, and list the present indications of this type of temporary derivation, which include: protection of a colo-colonic anastomosis, and the solution of perforations

The objectives of urinary diversion are expanding from merely preserving kidney functions to enabling the patient to have a good quality of life while maintaining an acceptable certain body image. During the new era of continent urinary diversion the psychological drawbacks of noncontinent skin stoma in young adolescents cannot be overlooked. Ureterosigmoidostomy has been the technique of choice for continent urinary diversion in bladder extrophy patients when bladder reconstruction is not feasible or has failed. Although it provides a good daytime continence it is associated with a high rate

Seven patients with acute and progressive abdominal distension secondary to massive cecal and right colon ileus are analyzed. Five had pseudoobstruction of the colon and two had cecal volvulus. Two of the patients with pseudoobstruction and one with cecal volvulus died from preexisting diseases. Pseudoobstruction of the colon is not a rare complication of elderly, sick, bedridden patients. Differential diagnoses include cecal and sigmoid volvulus and acute gastric dilation. Initial conservative therapy is warranted if no peritoneal signs are present. If the cecal diameter is more than 12 cm, c

Anatomical variations of colon are mostly developmental and can lead to variety of acute and chronic pathological conditions. So it becomes important to recognize and understand the importance of clinical implications of such anomalies to benefit surgeons, clinical geneticists and research community. We describe two cases of right sided sigmoid colon and long descending colon which had two segments: vertical and horizontal. The mesentery of ascending and descending colon was retained. This mesentery along with the mesentery of transverse colon was continuous with the mesentery of small intesti
