Thioether-Functionalized Cellulose for the Fabrication of Oxidation-Responsive Biomaterial Coatings and Films.

Biomaterial coatings and films can prevent premature failure and enhance the performance of chronically implanted medical devices. However, current hydrophilic polymer coatings and films have significant drawbacks, including swelling and delamination. To address these issues, hydroxyethyl cellulose is modified with thioether groups to generate an oxidation-responsive polymer, HECMTP. HECMTP readily dissolves in green solvents and can be fabricated as coatings or films with tunable thicknesses. HECMTP coatings effectively scavenge hydrogen peroxide, resulting in the conversion of thioether grou

Fabrication of oxidized bacterial cellulose by nitrogen dioxide in chloroform/cyclohexane as a highly loaded drug carrier for sustained release of cisplatin.

Carboxylated bacterial cellulose (OBC) was fabricated by oxidation with nitrogen dioxide in chloroform/cyclohexane and employed as a carrier for sustained release of antitumor substance cisplatin (CDDP). The influence of removing water method, solvent used in the synthesis, concentration of N2O4, and duration of the oxidation on content of carboxyl groups in reaction products was established. Due to the possibility of nitrogen dioxide to penetrate into cellulose crystallites, the carboxyl group content of the OBC reaches high values up to 4 mmol/g. In vitro degradation of OBC was determined un

A Pilot Study Using a Collagen/Oxidized Regenerative Cellulose Dressing for Split- Thickness Skin Graft Donor Sites to Reduce Pain and Bleeding Complications.

BACKGROUND: Standardized treatment of split-thickness skin graft (STSG) donor sites is not established. Bleeding can necessitate premature dressing changes, interrupting the healing process and increasing pain. PURPOSE: A collagen/oxidized regenerated cellulose (C/ORC) dressing was used on the donor site. The authors hypothesized that the collagen matrix could decrease bleeding-related complications, reduce pain, and foster epithelialization. METHODS: The C/ORC matrix was applied to the donor site after hemostasis was achieved. Dressings were removed between postoperative days 4 and 7, and t

Surface functionalization of cellulose with poly(3-hexylthiophene) via novel oxidative polymerization.

Surface functionalization of cellulose with poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) was conducted with FeCl3 as an oxidant in three different solvents: acetonitrile, chloroform, and hexane. Of these three solvents, hexane best promoted the grafting P3HT to cellulose with a high grafting ratio and molecular weight. The maxima of the UV-vis absorption and fluorescent spectra, observed at around 500 and 600nm, respectively, represented the build-up of the conjugated chain length formed by the grafting of P3HT onto the cellulose surface. The HOMO level of cellulose as determined by photoemission yield spect

Grafting natural nicotinamide on tempo-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils to prepare flexible and transparent nanocomposite films with fascinating mechanical strength and UV shielding performance.

Light pollution from ultraviolet (UV) radiation is gaining growing concerns, as the emissions and burning of fossil fuels destroyed the ozone layer. Seeking a solution against skin exposure to excessive radiation is an urgent requirement. In this study, nicotinamide (NA), the main component of vitamin B3, was introduced as a new modifier into Tempo-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNFs) together with the physical cross-linking with tannin acid (TA) to improve anti-UV performance of the nanocomposite films. Incorporation of NA into the films presents distinguished UV shielding capability UVB w

Cellulose membrane coated Mo-doped TiO2nanotube sheets for sustained oxidation of biomolecules.

Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNT) are widely researched materials for the photocatalytic generation of free radicals, which are useful in wastewater treatment. We aimed to prepare Mo-doped TNT sheets, covered with a cellulose membrane to avoid TNT surface inactivation by protein adsorption. We studied the susceptibility of serum albumin (SA) bound to different molar ratios of palmitic acid (PA) to denaturation and fibrillation by this system, which is meant to mimic oxidative stress conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The results demonstrated that cellulose membrane-covered TN

Improving Hydrogen Selectivity in Semiconductor Metal Oxide Gas Sensors with Cellulose Nanocrystal Membranes.

As hydrogen (H2) gains traction as a clean energy carrier, the need for reliable and selective gas sensors becomes increasingly urgent, particularly for detecting H2 leaks amidst complex gas environments. While semiconducting metal oxide (SMOX)-based sensors are attractive due to their low cost and high sensitivity, their poor selectivity remains a major limitation. In this work, we address this challenge by integrating a gas-selective membrane into the sensor packaging, without altering the sensing material itself. The membrane is produced in situ by drop-casting a suspension of cellulose nan
