Cemento-osseous Dysplasia Mimicking Periapical Cyst After the Orthodontic Treatment of the Mandible.

Cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) is a non-neoplastic condition, characterized by the replacement of normal cancellous bone with fibrous tissues containing woven bone and cementum in the tooth-bearing areas. This report presents the case of a 21-year-old male who developed COD following orthodontic treatment. A panoramic radiograph showed a periapical radiolucent lesion in the right mandibular canine area. Cone beam computed tomography revealed a mixed radiolucent and radiopaque lesion. Histologically, the lesion exhibited cementum-like calcifications and woven bone scattered within the hemorrha

Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia mimicking apical periodontitis: A case report.

Cemento-osseous dysplasia may present as a focal, periapical or florid lesion in the mandible or maxilla. The lesion may sometimes appear similar to peri-radicular lesions on a periapical radiograph. This report presents a case with irreversible pulpitis and root resorption as well as a mixed radiolucent/radiopaque lesion around a mandibular molar tooth root. Root canal treatment was performed and because of the radiographic signs of root resorption and the patient's fear of having a malignant disease, periapical surgery was also performed. The histopathology report confirmed the presence of f

[Case report: Cemento-ossifying fibroma of the ethmoidal sinus presenting with exophthalmos].

Cemento-ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous tumor which contains fibrous tissue and varying amounts of calcified tissue resembling bone, cementum or both. The tumor is frequently seen in the mandibula and maxilla, but it may rarely affect the ethmoidal sinus. In this report, CT findings of cemento-ossifying fibroma located in the ethmoidal sinus are presented.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma of the orbit.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma presents with ophthalmic symptoms and signs rarely. We report the clinical and pathological findings in a case of cemento-ossifying fibroma of the right maxilla with extension into the orbital floor causing intermittent vertical diplopia, proptosis, and upward displacement of the globe. Compression of the nasolacrimal duct produced epiphora early in the course of the disease. Fibrous dysplasia has often been diagnosed in other cases of benign monostotic fibro-osseous conditions. Ossifying fibroma is easily confused with fibrous dysplasia. The histopathological differe

Ossifying Fibromas of the Head and Neck Region: A Clinicopathological Study of 45 Cases.

Ossifying fibromas of the head and neck region are classified as cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) (odontogenic origin), and two types of juvenile ossifying fibromas: juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma (JTOF), and juvenile psammomatous ossifying fibroma (JPOF). The potential for recurrence in JTOF and JPOF and the discovery of newer molecular signatures necessitates accurate histological classification. Over 12 years (2005-2017), a total of 45 patients with 51 tumours were retrieved and reviewed for clinic-pathological features from the archives of a tertiary care oncology centre. Of 45 cases

The clinical and diagnostic imaging findings of osteosarcoma of the jaw.

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the valuable clinical features and diagnostic imaging findings regarding the diagnosis of osteosarcoma of the jaw (OSJ). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The initial symptoms and diagnostic imaging findings of 10 patients with OSJ were analysed. The points analysed on the diagnostic images were as follows: any widening of the periodontal ligament space of the teeth on the periphery of the OSJ; the presence of radial spicules and Codman's triangle; any signs of bone destruction; and the patterns of osteogenesis. RESULTS: All patients had pain and/or swelling of the affected site,

CBCT features of florid cemento-osseous dysplasia with coexisting lesions at different maturation stages: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FLCOD) is a begin fibro-osseous lesion occurring in the tooth-bearing regions of the jaws and is characterized by replacement of normal bone with fibrous connective tissue and cementum-like mineralized material. Most patients are asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally during radiographic examinations, and the condition may be misdiagnosed because of overlapping imaging features with other jaw lesions. Because the disease is usually asymptomatic and exhibits imaging features that overlap with those of several odontogenic and inflammatory lesion

Cemento-osseous dysplasia with concomitant cemento-ossifying fibroma: a rare case report.

Despite rare reports of hybrid tumors containing cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF), its association with florid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) is very rare. A 38-year-old female presented for treatment of an expansive, tumoral lesion extending from the right mandibular lateral incisor to the first molar. Clinical examination revealed a significant bulging of the vestibular and lingual mandible cortices. CT scans revealed a hypodense, unilocular lesion that was relatively well-demarcated. Also, multiple mixed hyperdense/hypodense lesions were observed in the alveolar process of the jaws. An inc

Differential Diagnosis of a Periapical Radiolucent Lesion. A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

This article demonstrates a methodological approach to diagnosing a periapical radiolucency that could not be diagnosed using only basic clinical and radiographic findings. The patient was a 59-year-old Hispanic female with a small tender mass on the lower gingiva associated with tooth #25. Radiographic appearance demonstrated a well-defined radiolucent lesion at the apices of the mandibular incisors. The patient had no significant medical history. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) showed bony expansion of the buccal plate. Differential diagnosis included non-endodontic unilocular radioluce

Calcifying solitary bone cyst: morphological aspects and differential diagnosis of sclerotic bone tumours.

Fourteen solitary bone cysts (SBC) with large areas of calcification (7 in the femur, 4 in the humerus, and 1 each in the pelvis, the tibia and the scapula) and 402 SBC from the Hamburg Bone Tumour Registry were reviewed in a retrospective study. The analysis was done with emphasis on the clinical, radiological and histological appearances. SBC are well known lesions, but calcifying SBC (CSBC) or extensive extragnathic cement-like bone productions are rare. The clinical and radiological differential diagnosis includes fibrous dysplasia, chondroma, low-grade chondrosarcoma and osteosarcoma. Bit

Secondary jaw aneurysmal bone cyst (JABC)--a possible misnomer? A review of literature on secondary JABCs, their pathogenesis and oncogenesis.

CONTEXT: Aneurysmal bone cysts are rare pseudocysts, commonly seen in long bones and vertebral column. Although a well described and reported lesion, many misconceptions still prevail regarding their etiopathogenesis. Many of the reported cases of jaw aneurysmal bone cysts (JABC) present with another bone pathology. AIMS: The purpose of this review was to evaluate the incidence of neoplastic lesions occurring simultaneously with a JABC (in contrast to primary JABCs). Any pathogenetic and oncogenetic association between primary and secondary jaw ABCs has been reviewed and discussed. SETTINGS

Radiological follow-up of cemento-osseous dysplasia on cone-beam computed tomography.

This study investigated the natural course of cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Retrospectively, 104 CBCT scans from 36 patients (mean age, 44.5 years; 33 female and three male) with mandibular COD (10 florid, seven focal, 19 periapical) were included, based upon clinico-radiological features, without complications such as infection and related surgery. Changes in maximum diameter and morphology (lytic, mixed lytic-sclerotic, sclerotic) were evaluated in 83 lesions, with a mean follow-up of 28.3 months. The occurrence of a diameter increase was assessed b

Histomorphometric and molecular characterization of stromal and mineralized components in fibro-osseous lesions.

BACKGROUND: Indistinct and analogous histopathological features of various fibro-osseous lesions make establishing a definitive diagnosis a challenge. There is a need for additional molecular and histochemical tools to support and differentiate these lesions in order to establish a concrete diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of biopsied lesions in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections (10 cases each of fibrous dysplasia, ossifying fibroma, and cement-osseous dysplasia) retrieved from the archives was studied for immunoexpression of osteocalcin (quantitative analysi

Focal cemento-osseous dysplasia involving a mandibular lateral incisor.

AIM: To report a case of focal cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) affecting a single tooth misdiagnosed as an inflammatory periapical lesion. SUMMARY: The patient, a black 47-year-old woman complained of pain affecting the right side of the mandible. Routine X-ray examination discovered a periapical radiolucency on the mandibular left lateral incisor (tooth 32), which was otherwise normal and not carious. As the response of this tooth to a vitality test was doubtful, the lesion was diagnosed as a periapical granuloma or cyst secondary to pulpal necrosis. Endodontic treatment and curettage of th

Characteristics of imaging findings for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in patients with cemento-osseous dysplasia.

The present study aimed to elucidate the characteristics of imaging findings for medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) in patients with cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD). Images from patients with MRONJ and COD from among patients with osteomyelitis, including MRONJ, that were obtained from multidetector row computed tomography (MDCT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), panoramic radiographs, and dental radiographs, were retrospectively analysed. The characteristics of imaging findings for MRONJ in patients with COD were then analysed. Significant differences in the presence of sequ

[Benign epithelial odontogenic tumors].

The group of benign epithelial odontogenic tumors consists of the four member types of the ameloblastoma family (solid/multicystic, extraosseous/peripheral, desmoplastic, unicystic), squamous odontogenic tumors, calcifying odontogenic tumors, adenomatoid odontogenic tumors, and keratocystic odontogenic tumors, the former "keratocysts" that were recently reclassified by the World Health Organization and are now regarded as tumors. The latter are by far the most frequent tumors in this group, followed by solid/multicystic ameloblastoma. Although the etiology of these lesions is still unknown, a

[Tumor-like lesions].

Tumor-like bone lesions include various conditions of a non-neoplastic nature originating from or affecting the bone as solitary or sometimes multiple bone lesions. This review discusses the most important cystic tumor-like lesions, such as simple bone cyst, aneurysmal bone cyst, intraosseous ganglion, epidermoid cyst and subchondral cyst. MR is the most sensitive method of detection, and is the most accurate in depicting the extent of involvement of these lesions. MR signal characteristics may aid in differential diagnosis. Conventional radiographs are often more specific with respect to the
