The authors consider the spondylolysis a polyetiologic abnormality with an important part of congenital factors in its origin. The frequency of spondylolysis can be considered a feature characterizing a population. This opinion is confirmed by finds in skeletal materials from old Slavonic and Slavonic-Avaric cemeteries. The frequency of spondylolysis in the Slavonic part is significantly lower than in the Slavonic-Avaric part of the materials. The share of unilateral spondylolysis is also different (15 and 7%) when comparing these two population groups, but statistically insignificant. The so-

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the potential genetic etiology of cribra orbitalia noted on human skeletal remains.
MATERIALS: We obtained and analyzed ancient DNA of 43 individuals with cribra orbitalia. The analyzed set represented medieval individuals from two cemeteries in western Slovakia, Castle Devín (11th-12th century AD) and Cífer-Pác (8th-9th century AD).
METHODS: We performed a sequence analysis of 5 variants in 3 genes associated with anemia (HBB, G6PD, PKLR), which are the most common pathogenic variants in present day of European populations, and one variant

This study presents the results of the analysis of the remains of 23 executed male individuals aged between 21 and 63 years, recovered from Osobowicki Cemetery in Wroclaw (Poland), field 83B, in 2012. In 1948 and 1949, prisoners sentenced to death by firing squad--most of them associated with the post-war anti-communist underground independence movement in Poland--were buried there. The aim of the study was to analyse fatal wounds and the method of execution, and to compare the results to data from archival documents. The results were also compared with studies concerning executions during a l

The skeletal remains of 17 people buried in the Eaton Ferry Cemetery in northern North Carolina provide a means of examining health and infectious disease experience in the XIX century South. The cemetery appears to contain the remains of African Americans enslaved on the Eaton family estate from approximately 1830-1850, and thus offers a window into the biological impacts of North American slavery in the years preceding the Civil War. The sample includes the remains of six infants, one child, and one young and nine mature adults (five men, four women, and one unknown). Skeletal indices used t

Tuberculosis (TB) may be an acute or chronic infection of bone and/or soft tissues. Nevertheless, human skeletons only registered a small percentage of those cases. This work aims to explore data from morbidity and mortality of individuals who contracted or died of TB after Koch bacillus discovery and before the development of antibiotics, using this information to interpret the scarcity of evidences detectable by paleopathological studies. To fulfill these goals, the Coimbra University Hospital and Coimbra Municipality Cemetery records from 1919 to 1928 were analyzed. As expected, pulmonary T

This article identifies and discusses seven new cases of complete maxillary canine-premolar transposition in ancient populations from the Santa Barbara Channel region of California. A high frequency of this tooth transposition has been previously documented within a single prehistoric cemetery on one of the Channel Islands. A total of 966 crania representing 30 local sites and about 7,000 years of human occupation were examined, revealing an abnormally high prevalence of this transposition trait among islanders during the Early period of southern California prehistory ( approximately 5500-600

The Black Death of 1347-1351 was one of the most devastating epidemics in human history, and though it is frequently assumed that the epidemic killed indiscriminately, recent research suggests that the disease was selective, at least with respect to frailty. The purpose of this study is to determine whether the Black Death was similarly selective with respect to biological sex-that is, did either sex face an elevated risk during the epidemic or were men and women at equal risk of dying? A sample of 298 victims of the Black Death, from the East Smithfield cemetery in London, is compared to a pr

Leprosy was a well-recognized and dreaded disease in medieval Europe (5th-15th century AD). It is reported to have reached Germany with the Roman invasion. A much larger fraction than previously assumed appears to have been affected by leprosy in the medieval period. This article estimates the frequency (i.e., the prevalence at death) of leprosy among adult people buried in the Lauchheim early medieval cemetery. Seven different dichotomous osteological lesions indicative of leprosy are analyzed, and it is possible to score at least one of these conditions on 110 adult skeletons (aged 15 or mor

Paleoparasitological investigation in the archeological site of the Caspian Sea littoral revealed the presence of human Dioctophyma renale infection, a ubiquitous kidney-residing helminth of mammals, during the Parthian Empire of Iran (247 BC-224 AD). This study reports the oldest human infection with giant kidney worm in the Middle East, mainly in an area where the infection is reported nowadays. The paucity of records throughout the literature suggests that the same species of parasite occurred with low frequency in the past, as well. The cemetery in the archeological site of Kiasar represen

OBJECTIVE: To investigate how lifestyle may have impacted the risk of contracting intestinal parasites in medieval England . Regular clergy (such as those living in monasteries) and the lay population form interesting groups for comparison as diet and lifestyle varied significantly. Monasteries were built with latrine blocks and hand washing facilities, unlike houses of the poor.
MATERIALS: Sediment samples from the pelvis, along with control samples from feet and skull, of 19 burials of Augustinian Friars (13th-16th century), and 25 burials from All Saints by the Castle parish cemetery (10th

OBJECTIVES: To test whether mobile phone surveys conducted remotely might generate data on deaths that are not covered by mortality surveillance systems established in laboratories and health facilities, or in institutions involved in the post-mortem management of corpses (e.g., morgues, cemeteries).
METHODS: We conducted a national survey of mobile phone users in Bangladesh during the COVID-19 pandemic. Respondents were asked to list the deaths that had occurred in their household in recent years. For each death, they were also asked to indicate whether the deceased had been diagnosed with C

We present here a case of erosive polyarthropathy in an incomplete skeleton from a middle-Saxon period (c. AD 650-900) cemetery site in Sedgeford, Norfolk, England. After a differential diagnosis that includes erosive osteoarthritis and psoriatic arthritis, we believe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) to be the most probable cause. This example may therefore add to the evidence for an early date for the appearance of RA in Europe.

Leprosy is one of the major mycobacterial diseases caused by Mycobacterium (M.) leprae or M. lepromatosis. Although there is scientific evidence for human leprosy from the Iron Age, it became more prevalent during medieval times, deeply affecting society and social life. Leprosy was considered a consequence of sin and was later thought to a certain extent to be inherited. Lepers were declared legally dead and excluded from normal social life. In the 14th century, the medicalization of leprosy began. Leprosaria became the earliest hospitals in the Middle Ages that were specialized for a single

The purpose of this research is to examine whether degenerative joint diseases (DJD) and enthesopathies can be used in conjunction in research that aims to understand the activity levels of past populations. To examine this, the relationship between DJD and enthesopathies needs to be explored while taking different peripheral joints and types of entheses into account. In addition, the present research aims to examine the frequency of DJD and enthesopathies in the Joseon Dynasty population of Korea with comparisons with data in other skeletal series of similar dates. In this research, 173 indiv

OBJECTIVES: We aim to discuss the presence of treponemal infections in three individuals belonging to a large (∼400 individuals) Late Medieval cemetery (14th -16th century) that archaeological and documentary sources place within a Jewish context, and to discuss the role of these diseases in a biocultural perspective.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: An anthropological and paleopathological study was conducted on skeletal remains of three individuals, though macroscopic and tomographic examination.
RESULTS: Cranial lesions in which simultaneous destructive and proliferative processes (caries sicca) ar

We present a case of skeletonised human remains. In the present case report, a body was exhumed from the ground above a cemetery. On exhumation, the body was partially-skeletonised with adipocere formation on the upper part of the body. Autopsy of the body showed two bullets in the right thigh muscle and lumbar vertebrae between L4 and L5. Postmortem changes and destruction of soft tissue made it impossible to determine direction of fire through the body, even in a careful complete autopsy.

Only a limited number of genetic diseases are diagnosable in archaeological individuals and none have had causal mutations identified in genome-wide screens. Two individuals from the Gaelic Irish Medieval burial ground of Ballyhanna, Co. Donegal, showed evidence of bone tumours consistent with the autosomal dominant condition multiple osteochondromas. Genome sequencing of the earlier individual uncovered a missense mutation in the second exon of EXT1, a specific lesion that has been identified in several modern patients. The later individual lacked this but displayed a novel frameshift mutatio

Cities have historically endured profound challenges while sustaining their populations through adaptive structures and functions. Understanding contemporary urbanization requires situating it within these long-term historical trajectories. This study examines the demographic consequences of historical transitions in Thessaloniki over 1,800 years, based on 846 individuals recovered from peri-urban and intramural cemeteries. Survival analysis was applied to assess mortality risk and life expectancy across six periods: Hellenistic (323-31 BC), Roman (31 BC-AD 324), Early Byzantine (AD 324-842),
