Anti-GABAB Receptor Autoimmune Encephalitis: A Report of a Rare Case in Central America.

Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a rare disease. There have been very few reports of anti-GABAB receptor encephalitis, and no case of this subtype has ever been reported in Central America. We present a case of a 21-year-old male patient with an unremarkable previous medical history who was hospitalized because of a new onset of seizures and status epilepticus. Central nervous system infections, neoplastic disorders, cerebrovascular disease, septic and metabolic encephalopathy, and drug toxicity were ruled out. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed lymphocytic pleocytosis and oligoclonal bands. In

Centralized industrialization of pork in Europe and America contributes to the global spread of Salmonella enterica.

Salmonella enterica causes severe food-borne infections through contamination of the food supply chain. Its evolution has been associated with human activities, especially animal husbandry. Advances in intensive farming and global transportation have substantially reshaped the pig industry, but their impact on the evolution of associated zoonotic pathogens such as S. enterica remains unresolved. Here we investigated the population fluctuation, accumulation of antimicrobial resistance genes and international serovar Choleraesuis transmission of nine pig-enriched S. enterica populations comprisi

Performance of immunohistochemistry as a useful tool for the diagnosis of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama, Central America.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is one of the most frequent parasitic zoonoses in Panama. Currently, conventional, molecular and histopathological tests are performed to diagnose CL. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) has proven to be a valuable tool to facilitate the diagnosis of leishmaniasis and to study the cellular immune response developed during the infection. Therefore, considering the absence of IHC in the diagnostic routine in Panama, the objective of this study is to demonstrate the usefulness of this test as a complementary diagnostic tool for improving the sensitivity of histopathology (HP)

The PACARDO research project: youthful drug involvement in Central America and the Dominican Republic.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the occurrence and school-level clustering of drug involvement among school-attending adolescent youths in each of seven countries in Latin America, drawing upon evidence from the PACARDO research project, a multinational collaborative epidemiological research study. METHODS: During 1999-2000, anonymous self-administered questionnaires on drug involvement and related behaviors were administered to a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample that included a total of 12,797 students in the following seven countries: Costa Rica (n = 1,702), the Dominican Republic (

[Lack of food and nutritional security in Central America: contributing factors and social exclusion].

In August 2001, the XVII Meeting of the Health Sector in Central America and the Dominican Republic (RESSCAD) was held in Managua, Nicaragua. At the meeting, a resolution was adopted in support of strengthening and furthering the Central American initiative for the Promotion of Food and Nutritional Security. This paper examines the conceptual framework behind the initiative, which was approved by the XIV Central American Presidents Summit Meeting (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and launched in 1994 at the regional, national, and municipal levels (Guacimo, Costa Rica, 1994). It focuses on the accom

A scoping review of the available literature on the epidemiologic profile of migrants in-transit through South America, Central America, and Mexico from 2013-2025.

BACKGROUND: Migration through Latin America has increased, resulting in new routes and greater diversity among migrants. Timely, accurate data on the epidemiologic profiles of migrants in-transit could inform public health surveillance and interventions. OBJECTIVE: Provide an overview of the type of data collected on the epidemiologic profiles of migrants in-transit through South America, Central America, and Mexico. METHODS: We conducted a scoping review from peer-reviewed and grey literature reporting quantitative health data on selected infectious and non-infectious diseases, vaccination

Thymic minimally invasive surgery: state of the art across the world: Central-South America.

Literature suggests that, for thymectomy in myasthenia or resection of thymic tumors, minimally invasive surgery is equivalent to open surgery with regard to long-term outcomes. However, it could bring some benefits in the immediate results as complication rate or length-of-stay. There are doubts about the worldwide adoption of the method, though. In Latin America, the implementation of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) started in the 1990s, but it progressed slowly. The main barriers were associated costs and training. Thymic surgery poses a bigger challenge due to its rarity, so just a

Tessier 3 Cleft in a Pre-Hispanic Anthropomorphic Figurine in El Salvador, Central America.

In 1976, Paul Tessier provided a numerical classification system for rare facial clefts, numbered from 0 to 14. The Tessier 3 cleft is a rare facial cleft extending from the philtrum of the upper lip through the wing of the nostril, and reaches the medial canthus of the eye. The aim of this document was to describe a pre-Hispanic anthropomorphic figurine dating from the classic period (200 A.D.-900 A.D.), which has a Tessier 3 cleft. We also discuss the documented pre-Hispanic beliefs about facial clefts.

First record of the invasive Asian fish tapeworm Bothriocephalus acheilognathi in Honduras, Central America.

This paper provides the first report of the invasive Asian fish tapeworm, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi Yamaguti, 1934, in Honduras. The cestode was found in Profundulus portillorum (Cyprinodontiformes: Profundulidae), which represents a new host record, and which is a member of a genus faced with a variety of conservation challenges, now potentially complicated by the presence of this pathogenic cestode. Nearly complete sequence data from the ITS-1 5.8S and ITS-2 regions corroborate the determination based on morphological characteristics. Several species of carp were introduced to Honduras f

Comparison of daily physical activity between COPD patients from Central Europe and South America.

BACKGROUND: In healthy elderly and adults, lower physical activity level in daily life has been associated with lower socio-economic level and non-Caucasian race. The objective of this study was to determine if this is also applicable in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by comparing physical activity levels in daily life in stable patients from two countries (Austria and Brazil) with different socio-economic and ethnic characteristics. METHODS: Physical activity in daily life was objectively assessed in 40 Austrian and 40 Brazilian COPD patients. Groups were matched for age, gende

Genotype H: a new Amerindian genotype of hepatitis B virus revealed in Central America.

The complete genomes were sequenced for ten hepatitis B virus (HBV) strains. Two of them, from Spain and Sweden, were most similar to genotype D, although encoding d specificity. Five of them were from Central America and belonged to genotype F. Two strains from Nicaragua and one from Los Angeles, USA, showed divergences of 3.1-4.1% within the small S gene from genotype F strains and were recognized previously as a divergent clade within genotype F. The complete genomes of the two genotype D strains were found to differ from published genotype D strains by 2.8-4.6%. Their S genes encoded Lys(1

Airborne endotoxin concentrations in various work areas within a cotton mill in Central America.

Gram-negative bacteria and their endotoxins have been shown to cause profound changes in the structure and function of mammalian lungs. Airborne exposures in humans have resulted in bronchoconstriction and symptoms of chest tightness and dyspnea. Cotton dust is often heavily contaminated and endotoxin has been postulated to be the agent in cotton dust which is responsible for the byssinosis syndrome. Previous studies of cotton dust have revealed variable amounts of contamination by bacterial endotoxin, with the variability determined in large part by botanical and climatic characteristics. We

First Case of Primary Breast Melanoma in Central America: Case Report and Literature Review.

Primary breast melanoma is an exceedingly rare neoplasm, accounting for < 0.5% of all malignant breast tumors. Its scarcity and highly variable clinical presentation often delay diagnosis and complicate management. We report the case of a 55-year-old woman with a primary non-cutaneous melanoma of the right breast initially misdiagnosed as high-grade ductal carcinoma. As a result of discordant biopsy results, the lesion progressed developing ulceration, tissue destruction, and axillary metastases. Definitive diagnosis was established via repeated incisional biopsies and immunohistochemistry. Ma

Helicobacter pylori antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic consumption in the low-resource Central America setting.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance is a global public health problem, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where antibiotics are often obtained without a prescription. H. pylori antimicrobial resistance patterns are informative for patient care and gastric cancer prevention programs, have been shown to correlate with general antimicrobial consumption, and may guide antimicrobial stewardship programs in LMICs. We report H. pylori resistance and antimicrobial utilization patterns for western Honduras, representative of rural Central America. METHODS: In the context of the

Zoonotic Sporotrichosis Related to Cat Contact: First Case Report from Panama in Central America.

A previously healthy 34-year-old man presented with a four-week-old upper arm injury that started with a cat scratch and progressed into painless erythematous nodular ascending lesions in the left upper limb. We made the diagnosis of sporotrichosis based on the epidemiological association of the contact with a cat and culture identification. Sporotrichosis is a mycosis implantation caused by the Sporothrix schenckii complex. We present the first Central American case of sporotrichosis associated with contact with a feline.
