Inconsistencies in the differential diagnosis of open bite.

OBJECTIVE: To examine inconsistencies in the differential diagnosis of open bite. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using visual judgments, a total of 77 anterior open-bite cases in the postpubertal growth period were grouped as either morphogenetic, functional, or combination. The same sample was also grouped as either hyperdivergent, normodivergent, or hypodivergent using mandibular-plane angle and conventional cephalometry. Kappa analysis was used to test the agreement between the 2 methods of evaluation, and chi2 tests were used to analyze the distribution of cephalometrically grouped hyperdivergent

Potential Anatomic Markers of Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Prepubertal Children.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Adenotonsillar hypertrophy is the major cause of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in prepubertal children, but children without enlarged lymphoid tissues may still suffer from OSA. This study aimed to identify other potential anatomic features associated with childhood OSA. METHODS: This prospective study took place between January 2010 and April 2014. Prepubertal children suspected to have OSA, aged 6 to 11 years, were recruited. They underwent anthropometric measurements, nocturnal polysomnography, tonsil size evaluation, x-ray cephalometry, and sonographic measurement of lat

[Upper airways and sleep apnea syndrome].

The imaging techniques of the upper airway (UA) now permit a description of the characteristics of pharyngeal collapse during the course of obstructive apnoea. The start is oropharyngeal with active movements anterior and posterior of the soft palate and a falling back of the tongue. The extension occurs almost systematically towards the hypopharynx. A displacement of the hyoid bone and of the cervical spine is noted synchronously with thoracoabdominal movements. These imaging techniques of UA show the occurrence of passive pharyngeal collapse during certain types of central apnoea. In snorers

Changes in soft tissue facial profile of craniofacial microsomia patients: geometric morphometrics.

To analyze changes in the soft tissue profile associated with an inverted L osteotomy, preoperative, early postoperative, and late postoperative lateral cephalographs of 13 children with craniofacial microsomia (mean age 9 +/- 2 years) were scanned, and 11 soft tissue landmarks were digitized (digitization errors insignificant; P > 0.05). Cephalometry, Euclidean distance matrix analysis (EDMA), and thin-plate spline (TPS) analysis were carried out on the mean soft tissue landmark configurations. Cephalometry indicated that there were very few statistically significant differences in mean measu

Effects of an anteriorly titrated mandibular position on awake airway and obstructive sleep apnea severity.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether a reduction of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity was associated with significant upper airway (UA) changes after an anterior titration of the mandibular position. Eighteen OSA patients with a mean (SD) apnea hypopnea index (AHI) of 32.5 (12.3) were recruited. Baseline supine cephalometry was obtained before the initial insertion, and follow-up supine cephalometry was undertaken after titration with a titratable oral appliance in place. The mean AHI before treatment was significantly reduced to 9.7 (7.4) (P <.001) after titration. In 1

[Hemifacial microsomia: cephalometric evaluation].

Among the facial deformities one of the most frequent is the hemifacial microsomia. The Authors after a revision of the literature refer about their study. They utilize lateral, antero-posterior cephalometry and orthopantomogram to exactly identify the deformities. The Authors report the results of the analysis and emphasize that the functional alterations of the stomatologic system are of basical importance in the genesis of the syndrome.

Velocardiofacial syndrome with single central incisor.

Three siblings and their mother are reported who all had cytogenetically proven velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS). One boy had normal dental and craniofacial findings, except for an increased cranial base angle. His sister had only one central incisor in the maxilla. One central incisor had also been missing in the primary dentition. She had no labial frenulum present. Cephalometry showed a small maxillary unit length indicating mild maxillary hypoplasia, an increased anterior face height, steep mandibular plane angle, retruded chin, and a large cranial base angle. Dental measurements showed re

Orthodontic-Orthopedic-Surgical Treatment of Syndromic Third Class: Proposal of a New Craniofacial Cephalometric Method.

The management of patients suffering from class III due to syndromic craniosynostosis requires a multidisciplinary team to prevent and correct the complex clinical features related to the syndrome. Among the main clinical features, the midface hypoplasia requires surgical advancement with a rigid external distraction device. The comparison of pre- and postdistraction lateral cephalometries is often difficult in these patients, because the craniofacial advancement mobilizes the landmarks routinely used in cephalometry. Aim of this study is to evaluate occlusal, maxillary, and facial changes obt

Effects of mandibular advancement on airway curvature and obstructive sleep apnoea severity.

In a curved tube, the amount of airflow appears to be influenced by the amount of curvature. The purpose of this study was to investigate changes in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) severity and awake velopharyngeal curvature in response to an anteriorly titrated mandibular position in 20 male OSA patients. Baseline supine cephalometry was obtained before the initial insertion of a titratable oral appliance and follow-up supine cephalometry was undertaken after titration of the mandibular position with the appliance in place.
