An acute cerebellar hemorrhage in a 14-year-old girl was found to be caused by bleeding that had occured in an occult cerebellar astrocytoma. Such symptomatic hemorrhage into tumors, whether of metastatic or primary brain origin, occurs rarely but must be considered in patients of all ages who present with atypical strokes of presumed hemorrhagic etiology.

Pediatric glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) tumors, which have been established as 'de novo' neoplasms, are known to differ from their adult counterparts in terms of biology, genetics and ultimately survival of patients. In order to evaluate the utility of markers of tumor biology for refining prognostic assessment, we retrospectively analyzed 54 pediatric GBMs (age range 9 months to 15 years) occurring at different anatomical sites in the brain, operated at our institute between 1995 and 2001. The expression of p53, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), bcl-2 and retinoblastoma proteins (pRb)

The aetiology of neurosensorial damage with unilateral hearing loss and/or tinnitus and dizziness can often be difficult to determine because they may be caused wide variety of pathologic processes and a variety of diagnostic tests are needed in initial evaluation. In this paper, the authors describe, the techniques and indications of neuroimaging for evaluation of auditory symptoms. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing is still the choice when condition is suspected. We present a study of one patient with unilateral tinnitus, with no significant hearing loss and normal ABR: the patient u

Twenty patients with intracranial medulloblastoma were analyzed by CT. All patients presented with symptoms of headache, and in eight clinical findings consistent with intracranial hypertension were the only neurological abnormalities. In 16 cases, the medulloblastoma appeared as midline posterior fossa mass and in four cases it was located laterally in the cerebellar hemisphere. The fourth ventricle appeared abnormal and there was evidence of obstructive hydrocephalus in all cases. The lesion was hyperdense in 14 cases but in only one was there evidence of calcification; the neoplasm appeared

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) is a benign neoplasm with typical supratentorial location, but the possibility of these rare tumors can also be located in the posterior fossa must be taken into account. We report a 21-year-old woman that suffered gait instability, headache, and diplopia. On CT-scan, an intraparenchymatous cerebellar tumor was disclosed. It was isodense, showing light enhancement after contrast administration. On MRI (T1-weighted image) the tumor was isointense, showing inhomogeneous hyperintensity after-gadolinium administration. On T2-weighted MRI, the tumor was

A 69-year-old man with rapidly evolving vertigo and ataxia was admitted to our hospital. He was presented with a dysarthric speech and chaotic eye movements, identified as opsoclonus. Neurological examination revealed limb and truncal ataxias and an inability to stand unless fully assisted. A chest CT scan revealed a mass at the anterior mediastinum, which suggested paraneoplastic neurological syndrome (PNS). However, an extensive search for anti-neuronal antibodies linked to cerebellar ataxia failed to find any autoantibodies, including cell surface autoantibodies. Subsequently, a total surgi

Cerebral hemiatrophy is a known sequela of perinatal insults, autoimmune encephalitides, ischemic stroke, vascular abnormalities, infection, head trauma, and neoplasms. Documented cases of primary brain tumor-associated hemiatrophy have been described mostly in germinoma cases, with only four cases involving astrocytomas. We describe the clinical presentation, imaging, and course of a 30-year-old patient with a left frontal astrocytoma, isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutant, World Health Organization (WHO) grade 3; the patient initially presented with global aphasia out of proportion to the de

Cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS) is a well-known complication of posterior fossa (PF) tumour surgery. CMS has previously been reported in cases of non-tumour surgical aetiology in a limited number of publications. We report a case of a 10-year-old girl who suffered a cerebellar haemorrhage and subsequent CMS following surgical treatment of a ruptured arteriovenous malformation (AVM) in the cerebellar vermis. The AVM was removed acutely through a transvermian access, and hydrocephalus was treated with temporary external drainage. In the postoperative period, she suffered diffuse vasospasms of t

BACKGROUND: The endolymphatic sac is an organ devoid of sensory receptors. It is connected with the endolymphatic compartment and contains endolymph. Endolymphatic sac tumor (ELST) is a rare neoplasm involving the middle and inner ear described in humans and dogs that does not show cellular characteristics of malignancy, but can be locally invasive and involve destruction of the temporal bone and adjacent structures.
CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-month-old female cat was referred because of sudden onset of vestibular signs starting 3 days prior to referral. On clinical examination, the patient showe

INTRODUCTION: Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor (DLGNT), a new addition to the 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) classification, is a rare childhood neoplasm presenting with disseminated leptomeningeal enhancement and an occasional intraparenchymal mass. Diagnosis is often impeded by infectious/immunological differentials, necessitating a biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. We report an adult male with DLGNT without hydrocephalus, which is rare in patients with cerebellar masses.

This article presents a case study of a rare convexity meningioma located in the frontal lobe of the right cerebellar hemisphere. Meningiomas comprise a substantial part of central nervous system neoplasms and are classified into benign, atypical, or anaplastic categories, each encompassing a variety of histological subtypes, among which the secretory meningioma is notably rare. A 77-year-old male presented with a clinical history of headache, impaired memory functions, an initial form of apathetic-abulic syndrome, and a single seizure, which were considered to be indicative of epileptic sympt

Tumors of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) are common and represent up to 10% of all intracranial tumors. Rarely, intrinsic brainstem tumors can involve the CPA and present with auditory symptoms typical of CPA tumors such as hearing loss, vertigo and tinnitus. We report on a rare case of an intrinsic brainstem neoplasm presenting with steroid responsive fluctuating sensorineural hearing loss in a child. The patient initially presented with an acute worsening of an unilateral sensorineural hearing loss, without additional symptoms, that responded to oral steroids. Otoacoustic emission testing

A 15-year experience with paraneoplastic sensory neuronopathy at the Mayo Clinic is reviewed. Of 26 patients with paraneoplastic sensory neuropathy, 19 had small cell lung cancer, 4 had breast cancer, and 3 had other neoplasms. There was a striking predominance of females (20:6). Neuropathic symptoms (pain, paresthesia, sensory loss) were asymmetric at onset, with a predilection for the upper limbs; in three patients, symptoms were confined to the arms. Electrophysiologic testing revealed absent sensory responses and normal or minimally altered motor responses. Slightly more than half the pati

The primary function of the cerebellum is the coordination and regulation of movement; therefore, cerebellar tumors usually present with ataxia, dysarthria, and vertigo. Large tumors also cause elevated intracranial pressure that may lead to a disturbance of consciousness. Furthermore, it has become increasingly evident that the cerebellum plays a substantial role in cognitive and affective processing. A 44-year-old female patient presented with a 1-month history of depression and flat affect. She had no cerebellar symptoms including no coordination dysfunction or dysarthria. Cognitive functio

BACKGROUND: Conditions that can mimic posterior fossa tumors are rare. Their identification is crucial to avoid unnecessary surgical intervention, especially when prompt initiation of medical therapy is critical.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors presented a case of pseudotumoral hemorrhagic cerebellitis in a 3-year-old boy who presented initially with headache, persistent vomiting, and decreased level of consciousness 9 weeks after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a left cerebellar hemorrhagic mass-like lesion with edema and mild hydrocepha

INTRODUCTION: Cerebellar mutism syndrome is a well-known complication following posterior fossa tumor resection. Its incidence is markedly increased among patients with medulloblastoma. Patients typically present with an inability to communicate verbally due to disruption of the dentato-thalamocortical pathway.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a unique case of cerebellar mutism in a three-year-old girl who underwent gross total resection of medulloblastoma occupying the cerebellar vermis. In addition to mutism, the patient developed hyperphagia.
DISCUSSION: This case report aims to contribute to

INTRODUCTION: Cerebellar mutism syndrome is a debilitating postoperative neurological complication following posterior fossa surgery in children. It is characterized by a significant lack or loss of speech. Injury to the dentato-thalamo-cortical pathway is thought to be the main anatomical substrate of cerebellar mutism syndrome; however, few studies have investigated the physiological changes using computed electroencephalogram.
CASE REPORT: Herein, we report a case of a nine-year-old girl who developed cerebellar mutism syndrome after excision of an ependymoma of the fourth ventricle and wa

The central nervous system (CNS) tumors constitute the most common type of solid tumors in the pediatric population. The cerebral and cerebellar parenchyma are the most common site of pediatric CNS neoplasms. Imaging plays an important role in detection, characterization, staging and prognostication of brain tumors. The focus of the current article is pediatric brain tumor imaging with emphasis on pearls and pitfalls of conventional and advanced imaging in various pediatric brain tumor subtypes. The article also elucidates changes in brain tumor terms and entities as applicable to pediatric pa
