Dorsal column nuclei projection to the cerebellar caudal vermis in the rabbit revealed by the fluorescent double-labeling method.

The organization of the projection from the dorsal column nuclei (DCN) to the lobules of the cerebellar caudal vermis was studied in the rabbit. Following unilateral injections of the retrograde fluorescent tracers fast blue (FB) and diamidino yellow (DY) into the pyramis (Pr) and uvula (Uv), respectively, a great number of single FB- (40%) and DY-labeled (60%) neurons were observed in the ipsilateral (79%) and contralateral (21%) DCN subdivisions. These neurons, as parents for the DCN-Pr and DCN-Uv projections, were numerous in the lateral cuneate nucleus (CuL; 84 and 74%, respectively) and i

Abnormal development of the cerebellar vermis in children prenatally exposed to alcohol: size reduction in lobules I-V.

Abnormalities of the cerebellar vermis have been well documented in animal models of fetal alcohol syndrome. At this point, it is not known if the same brain region is affected in humans prenatally exposed to alcohol. In this study, the area of the cerebellar vermis was measured from brain magnetic resonance images of 9 children and young adults with prenatal alcohol exposure and 24 control subjects in the same age range. Six of the exposed children met standard criteria for fetal alcohol syndrome. The remaining three subjects had significant histories of prenatal exposure to alcohol, but did

Cerebellar functional reorganization after intermittent theta burst stimulation over vermis on balance recovery in subacute stroke patients.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate whether intermittent theta-burst stimulation (iTBS) over the cerebellar vermis enhances balance recovery in subacute stroke, and examine the underlying neural mechanisms. METHODS: Fifty-two patients with subacute stroke and balance impairment were randomized to receive either three weeks of iTBS (n = 26) or sham stimulation (n = 26). The primary outcome was the Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Secondary outcomes included additional motor function measures and surface electromyography (sEMG). Clinical assessments were conducted at baseline and at weeks 1, 2,

Cerebellar vermis and somatosensory-motor cortex differentially contribute to sex differences in acute pain perception in rats.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a universal experience, yet sex differences in acute pain perception remain unclear. Here, we examined sex-specific brain responses to acute pain evoked by tail clamping in rats. METHODS: A suitable isoflurane concentration for resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) was identified to ensure sedation without suppressing nociceptive responsiveness. rs-fMRI was performed to assess sex differences in brain activity and functional connectivity during acute pain, with control groups receiving touch stimulation or isoflurane-only exposure to identify pain-s

Ethanol exposure during development reduces GABAergic/glycinergic neuron numbers and lobule volumes in the mouse cerebellar vermis.

Cerebellar alterations are a hallmark of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and are thought to be responsible for deficits in fine motor control, motor learning, balance, and higher cognitive functions. These deficits are, in part, a consequence of dysfunction of cerebellar circuits. Although the effect of developmental ethanol exposure on Purkinje and granule cells has been previously characterized, its actions on other cerebellar neuronal populations are not fully understood. Here, we assessed the impact of repeated ethanol exposure on the number of inhibitory neurons in the cerebellar vermis.

Purkinje cells of the cerebellar dorsal vermis: simple-spike activity during pursuit and passive whole-body rotation.

To track a slowly moving object during whole body rotation, smooth-pursuit and vestibularly induced eye movements must interact to maintain the accuracy of eye movements in space (i.e., gaze), and gaze movement signals must eventually be converted into eye movement signals in the orbit. To understand the role played by the cerebellar vermis in pursuit-vestibular interactions, in particular whether the output of the vermis codes gaze-velocity or eye-velocity, we examined simple-spike activity of 58 Purkinje (P-) cells in lobules VI-VII of head-stabilized Japanese monkeys that were trained to el

Further delineation of a syndrome of cerebellar vermis hypo/aplasia, oligophrenia, congenital ataxia, coloboma, and hepatic fibrosis.

Three children are described from two sibships. They share infantile ataxia with hypo/aplastic vermis, hepatic fibrocirrhosis, slender-shaped skeleton, peculiar face, and moderate mental retardation. One of them had a kidney biopsy that showed mild interstitial fibrosis and amyloid deposit, but had no functional impairment. Another suffered moderate proximal tubular acidosis. Two children had unilateral or bilateral choroidal coloboma. This pattern of defects is consistent with a syndrome previously reported in two other sibships. The acronym COACH (Cerebellar vermis hypo/aplasia, Oligophrenia

Joubert syndrome: episodic hyperpnea, abnormal eye movements, retardation and ataxia, associated with dysplasia of the cerebellar vermis.

A unique syndrome consisting of episodic hyperpnea, abnormal eye movements, ataxia and mental retardation, associated with agenesis of the cerebellar vermis, has been delineated in four siblings by Joubert et al. (1969). We describe three other children with this clinically recognizable condition which we suggest to call Joubert syndrome. There is good evidence that it is inherited as autosomal recessive. Two of out patients were brothers, the third child's parents were related. Recognition of this syndrome is important in view of prognosis and for genetic counseling.

Cerebellar vermis defect, oligophrenia, congenital ataxia, and hepatic fibrocirrhosis without coloboma and renal abnormalities: report of three cases.

We describe 3 children (2 siblings aged 10 and 3 years, and 1 sporadic case aged 13 years) with cerebellar vermis defect associated with oligophrenia, congenital ataxia, and hepatic fibrocirrhosis. Differently from what is reported in COACH syndrome, coloboma and renal involvement were absent. Since in one patient hepatic involvement was subclinical and early therapy seemed to prevent disease progression, the presence of liver disease should be carefully investigated in any patient with ataxia and midline cerebellar defects.

COACH syndrome: report of two brothers with congenital hepatic fibrosis, cerebellar vermis hypoplasia, oligophrenia, ataxia, and mental retardation.

Congenital hepatic fibrosis (CHF) is probably the most common cause of non-icteric hepatosplenomegaly and is encountered mainly in children and young adults. We describe here two brothers from healthy, non-consanguineous parents. The patients showed early hepatosplenomegaly, portal hypertension, and no apparent kidney involvement. Clinical and laboratory findings were similar in both patients. Liver biopsies showed the presence of broad septa of fibrous tissue containing abundant bile ducts, portal tracts enlarged by fibrosis, and preserved lobular architecture. The histological findings were

A genetic variant in the MAST1 gene is associated with mega-corpus-callosum syndrome with hypoplastic cerebellar vermis, in a fetus.

BACKGROUND: Mega-corpus-callosum syndrome with cerebellar hypoplasia and cortical malformations is a rare neurological disorder that is associated with typical clinical and imaging features. The syndrome is caused by pathogenic variants in the MAST1 gene, which encodes a microtubule-associated protein that is predominantly expressed in postmitotic neurons in the developing nervous system. METHODS: Fetal DNA from umbilical cord blood samples and genomic DNA from peripheral blood lymphocytes were subjected to whole-exome sequencing. The potential causative variants were verified by Sanger seque

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging of the cerebellar vermis in patients with Parkinson's disease and visuospatial disorder.

PURPOSE: Visuospatial disorders (VSDs) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD). VSDs may involve cerebellar vermis, but evidence from functional connectivity (FC) studies is lacking. Here we compared FC between cerebellar vermis and the entire brain between PD patients with or without VSD, and between patients and healthy controls. METHODS: Resting-state 3.0-T functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed on 19 controls, 31 PD patients with VSD and 12 PD patients without VSD. Correlations in brain network were calculated between eight regions of interest in the cerebellar vermis (I-VIII)

Selective damage to the cerebellar vermis in chronic alcoholism: a contribution from neurotoxicology to an old problem of selective vulnerability.

The curiously consistent localization of cerebellar cortical damage in chronic alcoholism is re-evaluated in the light of selective damage, with a similar topography in the cerebellar vermal region, in superficial siderosis in man and in experimental animals exposed to certain toxic substances. Attention is drawn to the capacity for Purkinje cell dendrites and Bergmann glia to extract materials from the CSF, and to the close anatomical relationships of the susceptible lobules I-II, IX and X to the roof of the IVth ventricle and to the cistern of the great cerebral veins. This restriction of da

Increased cerebellar vermis volume following repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in drug-resistant epilepsy: a voxel-based morphometry study.

INTRODUCTION: Voxel-based morphometry (VBM) was applied to explore structural changes induced by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) and the relationship with clinical outcomes. Moreover, the relationship between each segmented regional gray matter (GM) volume was investigated to identify circuits involved in the rTMS treatment process in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE). METHODS: Nineteen patients with DRE were finally included in the analysis. A session of rTMS was applied for 5 consecutive days. Participants received either 1,000 or 3,000 pulses, at a frequency o

Functional connectivity between the cerebellar vermis and cerebrum distinguishes early treatment response for major depressive episodes in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The absence of biomarkers for predicting treatment response in adolescent mood disorder calls for further research. The vermis, a component of the cerebellum, is involved in mood disorder pathophysiology and relates to clinical symptoms and treatment outcomes. We investigated vermis functional connectivity (FC) as an early marker for treatment response identification. METHOD: One hundred thirty-two adolescents with mood disorders including major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder, were recruited, who were experiencing a major depressive episode. All adolescents underwent base
