Soil may contain certain concentrations of the natural radionuclide 40K as well as the artificial radionuclide 137Cs, which can accumulate in the edible parts of plants. This can lead to an exceedance of the ingestion dose. In this study, measurements of 40K and 137Cs were conducted for 144 food samples (including fruit, tea, cereals, beans, salt, and sugar) using gamma spectrometry. Following the Goiânia radiation accident, lymphocytes from 110 exposed or potentially exposed individuals were analyzed for the frequencies of chromosomal aberrations (dicentrics and centric rings) to estimate absorbed radiation dose. Dose estimates for 21 subjects exceeded 1.0 Gy, and for eight subjects they exceeded 4.0 Gy. Four of the subjects died. Cesium-137, becoming a more readily available ionizing gamma radiation source for laboratory use, was shown to effectively attenuate Schistosoma mansoni cercariae for vaccine production. In parallel comparison studies with the murine model, cesium-137 attenuated cercariae consistently afforded better (P greater than 0.05) protection than did the cobalt-60 prepared vaccine. Dose-response data indicated that the optimal total irradiation with cesium-137 was between 45 and 50 Krad.

A study was made of thiamin content of the skeletal muscles and livers of pork, chicken and beef after gamma-irradiation. gamma-Radiation from a 137Cs source was used to irradiate the samples with doses of 0, 1.5, 3, 6 and 10 kGy at 2 degrees C. Samples were also titrated with dichlorophenol-indophenol to determine the reducing capacity of the tissues. A model for accelerated aging in mice was developed: CB6F2 mice aged 39-45 days were exposed to fractionated 4-fold relatively uniform γ-radiation (137Cs, 0.98 Gy/min) at a total dose of 6.8 Gy. PURPOSE: Deciding on treatment carcinoma of the tongue when the tumor has a thickness of 1.5 cm or more is difficult. Surgery often requires wide resection and re-construction, leading to considerable functional impairment. A cesium implant is an attractive option, but according to the Manchester System, a two plane implant is needed.

A study is presented of 51 patients (age 52-77 years) suffering of uterine body cancer with marked extragenital pathology. It is shown that treatment of inoperable cancer of the uterine body using the SELECTRON apparatus for contact irradiation (cesium-137 source, 066-MEV photons). With this method exact dose control is possible. The preferred regime of dose fractionation in intracavitary radiation of endometrium cancer is a single dose of 1000 cGr weekly and a summary dose of 7000-8000 cGr.
