Evaluating noninvasive methods for estimating cestode prevalence in a wild carnivore population.

Helminth infections are cryptic and can be difficult to study in wildlife species. Helminth research in wildlife hosts has historically required invasive animal handling and necropsy, while results from noninvasive parasite research, like scat analysis, may not be possible at the helminth species or individual host levels. To increase the utility of noninvasive sampling, individual hosts can be identified by applying molecular methods. This allows for longitudinal sampling of known hosts and can be paired with individual-level covariates. Here we evaluate a combination of methods and existing

Clinical characteristics and epidemiology of intestinal tapeworm infections over the last decade in Tokyo, Japan: A retrospective review.

BACKGROUND: Tapeworm (cestode) infections occur worldwide even in developed countries and globalization has further complicated the epidemiology of such infections. Nonetheless, recent epidemiological data on cestode infections are limited. Our objectives were to elucidate the clinical characteristics and epidemiology of diphyllobothriosis and taeniosis in Tokyo, Japan. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We retrospectively reviewed 24 cases of human intestinal cestode infection from January 2006 to December 2015 at a tertiary referral hospital in Tokyo, Japan. The patients included were diagnose

Intestinal cestodes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes the biology, clinical aspects, diagnosis, treatment and epidemiology for the common and rarer (zoonotic) intestinal cestodes of humans. RECENT FINDINGS: Mass drug application to eliminate Taenia solium carriers may have only temporary effects on cysticercosis transmission. At least two major world genotypes of T. solium have been identified and greater genetic heterogeneity may occur at the regional level. A new human taeniid T. asiatica has been confirmed which occurs sympatrically with T. saginata and T. solium in Southeast Asia. Coproantigen and PC

Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum infections in harbor porpoises (Phocoena Phocoena) in German waters.

Harbor porpoises (Phocoena) are definitive hosts for intestinal Diphyllobothrium sp. cestodes, zoonotic parasites with a heterogeneous life cycle and fishes as second intermediate hosts. Prevalence and level of infection of Diphyllobothrium cestodes in 661 dead-found harbor porpoises from the German North and Baltic Seas within a 30-year period were investigated. Molecular species identification of cestodes was carried out, using ribosomal and mitochondrial gene markers. Pathogenic impact of cestodes on intestinal tissue was analyzed by using review of histopathological records. With 18 cestod

Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidae) found from a harbor porpoise in northern Japan, with comments on a geographical gap with human infection cases in southern Japan.

Even though the cetacean tapeworm Diphyllobothrium stemmacephalum occurs in both cold and warm waters, human infections and final host occurrences have been confined to temperate areas in and near Japan. We recently obtained a strobila of this cestode that was excreted from a harbor porpoise accidentally caught offshore of Hokkaido of northern Japan. Genetic analysis of 28S rDNA and cox1 genes confirmed that the cestode was D. stemmacephalum. Our finding sets the northernmost record of D. stemmacephalum in the western Pacific, suggesting that the risk of human infections by this parasite in no

Vaccination against cestode parasites.

Cestodes are tapeworm parasites. Infection in the intermediate host with larval (metacestode) parasites causes medically and economically important diseases known as hydatidosis and cysticercosis. Immunization against experimental infection with metacestode parasites has been highly successful, in marked contrast with the relative ineffectiveness of vaccines against infection with most parasitic organisms. High levels of immunity against a challenge infection with taeniid cestode eggs can be stimulated by immunization with extracts of the parasites, particularly with extracts of the oncosphere

DNA barcoding reveals different cestode helminth species in northern European marine and freshwater ringed seals.

Three subspecies of the ringed seal (Pusa hispida) are found in northeastern Europe: P. h. botnica in the Baltic Sea, P. h saimensis in Lake Saimaa in Finland, and P. h. ladogensis in Lake Ladoga in Russia. We investigated the poorly-known cestode helminth communities of these closely related but ecologically divergent subspecies using COI barcode data. Our results show that, while cestodes from the Baltic Sea represent Schistocephalus solidus, all worms from the two lakes are identified as Ligula intestinalis, a species that has previously not been reported from seals. The observed shift in c

Anthelmintics. A comparative review of their clinical pharmacology.

Virtually all the important helminth infections in humans can be treated with one of 5 anthelmintics currently in use: albendazole, mebendazole, diethylcarbamazine, ivermectin and praziquantel. These drugs are vital not only for the treatment of individual infections, but also useful in controlling transmission of the more common infections. This article reviews briefly the pharmacology of these 5 drugs, and then discusses current issues in the use of anthelmintics in the treatment and/or control of soil-transmitted nematode infections, filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis (and other tr

Geospatial Modelling and Univariate Analysis of Commensal Rodent-Borne Cestodoses: The Case of Invasive spp. of Rattus and Indigenous Mastomys coucha From South Africa.

Poor socio-economic and unsanitary conditions are conducive to commensal rodent infestations, and these conditions are widespread in South Africa. Cestode species of zoonotic interest are highly prevalent in commensal rodents, such as invasive Rattus norvegicus, Rattus rattus, Rattus tanezumi, and indigenous Mastomys coucha, and have been frequently recovered from human stool samples. These cestode species have similar transmission dynamics to traditional soil-transmitted helminths (STHs), which ties them to infections associated with poverty and poor sanitation. Univariate analysis was used i

Cestodes change the isotopic signature of brine shrimp, Artemia, hosts: implications for aquatic food webs.

To reach the final host (greater flamingos), the cestode Flamingolepis liguloides alters the behaviour of its intermediate host, the brine shrimp, Artemia parthenogenetica, causing it to spend more time close to the water surface. During summer 2010, we showed that the prevalence of this cestode was consistently higher at the top of the water column in the Odiel salt pans in south-western Spain. We used stable nitrogen (N) and carbon (C) isotopic analysis to test the hypothesis that cestodes also alter resource use by Artemia. In early summer, we compared stable isotopes in infected hosts at t

Improving cestode diagnosis in domestic dogs and cats: the need for accurate and non-invasive techniques.

Cestode infections in companion animals pose a significant diagnostic challenge due to intermittent egg shedding and the limitations of traditional coproscopic techniques. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of microscopy and PCR in detecting cestodes in dogs and cats, using necropsy as the gold standard. A total of 81 animals (46 dogs and 35 cats) were examined by necropsy, with gastrointestinal tracts inspected for cestodes. Fecal samples were collected and analyzed by coproscopy and PCR targeting cestode infections. Necropsy identified cestodes in 7 (8.6 %; 95 % CI: 4.3 - 16.8) out

First report of a species of Senga (Cestoda: Bothriocephalidae) in commercial Betta splendens (Actinopterygii: Osphronemidae) in Brazil.

Species of the genus Senga comprise a group of bothriocephalidean cestodes that predominantly parasitize freshwater teleost fishes, causing severe histopathological alterations due to scolex attachment to the digestive tract or obstruction of the intestinal lumen. The Siamese fighting fish Betta splendens is the type-host of Senga besnardi, the type species of the genus known only from the original description. Despite the importance of this fish species to ornamental aquaculture in Brazil, there are no prior records of this parasite in the Americas. Therefore, the present study aims to report

Molecular identification of cestodes from rodents in the Mazury Lake District region of Poland.

Rodents serve as hosts for many species of parasites, including cestodes, but the taxonomy of rodent-infecting tapeworms, especially in Central Europe, is still understudied. Therefore, the current study was conducted to identify larval and adult cestodes in free-living rodents from Northeastern Poland. The fieldwork was conducted between 2014 and 2023 in three forest sites. Cestodes were collected from five rodent species (Clethrionomys glareolus, Alexandromys oeconomus, Microtus agrestis, Apodemus agrarius and A. flavicollis, and were identified through morphology and by several genetic mark

Spinal cord proliferative sparganosis in Taiwan: a case report.

A 43-year-old woman suffered from low back pain and bilateral footdrop. A cisternal myelogram unexpected revealed multiple filing defects in the spinal canal extending from the lower cervical region to the caudal equina. Diagnostic exploration revealed numerous cystic organisms adhering to the spinal cord and nerve roots. Histopathological examination showed these organisms to be proliferative sparganum cestode larvae. Although these cestode larval infections have been reported a dozen times in humans from various parts of the world, this is probably the first reported case of spinal cord infe

The effect of the expulsion phase of Trichinella spiralis on Hymenolepis diminuta infection in rats.

The effect of the intestinal changes brought about by the expulsion of Trichinella spiralis in rats was studied in relation to the growth and survival of a concurrent infection with Hymenolepis diminuta, a cestode not normally rejected by the rat in low-level infections. Growth of H. diminuta was stunted in rats given T. spiralis just before, or after, infection with H. diminuta, the stunting being more pronounced when the cestode was given closer to the period of inflammation. There was no loss of the cestode from dual-infected rats and no evidence for destrobilation was found. Lower T. spira

Praziquantel Resistance in the Zoonotic Cestode Dipylidium caninum.

Dipylidium caninum is a cosmopolitan cestode infecting dogs, cats, and humans. Praziquantel is a highly effective cestocidal drug and resistance in adult cestodes has not been reported. From 2016 to 2018, a population of dogs with cestode infections that could not be eliminated despite multiple treatments with praziquantel or epsiprantel was identified. Cases of D. caninum were clinically resistant to praziquantel and could not be resolved despite increasing the dose, frequency, and duration of treatment. Resistant isolates were identified and characterized by sequencing the 28S, 12S, and volt

[Therapeutic possibilities in diseases caused by intestinal parasites].

Compatible and efficient drugs for the therapy, caused by protozoal- or helminthic-infections, are available today. Many of them are not registered in Austria. Metronidazole, Mebendazole and Praziquantel are particularly effective. Most protozoal-infections can be treated with metronidazole. Mebendazole can be used against numerous nematode-infections (Ascariasis, Trichuriasis, Oxyuriasis, Ancylostomiasis), Niclosamide against cestode-infections (Taeniasis, Hymenolepiasis, Diphyllobothriasis), whereas, Praziquantel is applied against trematode-infections.
