Aspergillosis in 41 wild bird species in the eastern United States: a 22-year retrospective review.

Aspergillosis is the most commonly and widely reported fungal infection in birds. Disease development is often secondary to stressors that cause immunocompromise, and it is typically regarded as a disease of captivity. We retrospectively evaluated data from 133 birds diagnosed with aspergillosis at the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study from 2001-2023 to assess diversity and relative frequency across avian taxa, gross and histologic lesion patterns, and comorbidities. Of 10 taxonomic orders represented, Charadriiformes (shorebirds; n = 35) and Accipitriformes (raptors; n = 32) wer

Molecular Survey of Chlamydial Infections in Three Public Bird Collections in Tehran, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Avian Chlamydia spp. are capable of infecting different avian species and potentially cause the loss of valuable birds in rehabilitation facilities and zoos. They also pose a potential zoonotic risk to visitors and workers at such centres. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the occurrence of chlamydia in two different public aviaries and a rehabilitation centre. METHOD: One hundred and eight samples from 48 different avian species belonging to 11 different orders were collected. These samples were tested for chlamydia infection by detecting the Chlamydia 16s rRNA gene using p

The Genomic Contributions of Avian H1N1 Influenza A Viruses to the Evolution of Mammalian Strains.

Among the influenza A viruses (IAVs) in wild aquatic birds, only H1, H2, and H3 subtypes have caused epidemics in humans. H1N1 viruses of avian origin have also caused 3 of 5 pandemics. To understand the reappearance of H1N1 in the context of pandemic emergence, we investigated whether avian H1N1 IAVs have contributed to the evolution of human, swine, and 2009 pandemic H1N1 IAVs. On the basis of phylogenetic analysis, we concluded that the polymerase gene segments (especially PB2 and PA) circulating in North American avian H1N1 IAVs have been reintroduced to swine multiple times, resulting in

Avian influenza amplified age-related mortality in a long-lived seabird.

In recent years, highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A (H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b viruses have caused mass mortality events in seabirds worldwide, raising concern for long-lived species with low reproductive rates. Using 28 years of ringing data together with individual-level data from the 2022 mass mortality event in northwestern European Sandwich terns (Thalasseus sandvicensis), we show that mortality was biased towards older individuals, while no sex bias was observed. HPAI-related mortality increased from approximately 5-10% in young breeders to more than 40% in the oldest individuals. Thi

Ocular disease caused by the trematode Philophthalmus lachrymosus in free-living kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) of Brazil.

In this study, clinical, parasitological and histopathological findings of thirteen kelp gulls (Larus dominicanus) found infected with eyeflukes in Brazil are presented. Parasites detected in the ventral conjunctival fornix were identified as Philophthalmus lachrymosus [mean intensity of infection: 16 (5-36) worms/bird]. Eleven birds (85%) presented signs of systemic disease, such as emaciation, dehydration and depressed consciousness. Conjunctival hyperemia was observed in 22 eyes (85%). Keratitis, corneal ulcers, corneal abscess and chemosis were also detected in some eyes (4-8%). Histopatho

Characterization of antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli isolates from Black-headed gulls (Larus ridibundus) present in the city of Novi Sad, Serbia.

Despite common resistance to antimicrobials in Escherichia coli isolates from farm animals in Serbia, no data are currently accessible on its occurrence in E. coli isolated from gulls. Therefore, 67 cloacal swabs and 70 fecal samples from black-headed gulls were investigated for the presence of antibiotic-resistant E. coli isolates. Ninety-nine isolates were obtained during the study. Resistotyping and resistance gene typing has shown that 44 isolates harbor resistance to one or more antibiotics. Multidrug resistance was detected in 24 E. coli isolates. Ten isolates were resistant to extended-

Recovery of Oswaldotrema nacinovici from Whimbrels (Aves) in Korea.

Adult specimens of Oswaldotrema nacinovici (Digenea: Philophthalmidae) have been first identified in Korea from 2 migratory birds (whimbrels, Numenius phaeopus) which were found dead at a western seashore area near Gunsan. The worms were recovered in the intestine of these birds. The worms were morphologically characterized by a large ventral sucker in comparison to the oral sucker, an external seminal vesicle extending beyond the posterior margin of the ventral sucker, and conspicuous uterine seminal receptacle. It was noteworthy that metacercariae-like bodies were contained within the inflat

First Characterization of Avian Influenza Viruses from Greenland 2014.

In late February 2014, unusually high numbers of wild thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) were found dead on the coast of South Greenland. To investigate the cause of death, 45 birds were submitted for laboratory examination in Denmark. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) with subtypes H11N2 and low pathogenic H5N1 were detected in some of the birds. Characterization of the viruses by full genome sequencing revealed that all the gene segments belonged to the North American lineage of AIVs. The seemingly sparse and mixed subtype occurrence of low pathogenic AIVs in these birds, in addition to the emac

Sublethal toxicity of the Prestige oil spill on yellow-legged gulls.

The Prestige oil spill in November 2002 is considered the biggest large-scale catastrophe of its type in Europe, thousands of seabirds dying in the subsequent months. Here, the total concentration of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (TPAH) was measured in the blood cell fraction of adult and chick yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis) from unoiled and oiled coastal areas in North Western Spain. In addition, hematocrit, plasma metabolites, electrolytes and enzymes, as well as body mass were determined in the same individuals. Our results strongly suggest the presence of health damages of s

The expanding H5N1 avian influenza panzootic causes high mortality of skuas in Antarctica.

High pathogenicity avian influenza virus H5N1 subtype (H5N1 HPAIV), clade 2.3.4.4b, is expanding its host and geographical range, and invaded Antarctica in 2023. Although mortality in Antarctic wildlife from H5N1 HPAIV has been suspected, mainly based on virological analysis of swabs collected from dead animals, it has not been unequivocally diagnosed. Here we show that H5N1 HPAIV caused high mortality in a breeding colony of skuas at one of ten sites in Antarctica we visited in March 2024. By combined virological, bacteriological and pathological analyses, we found that H5N1 HPAIV caused mult

Breeding habitat characteristics of Saunders's Gull (Saundersilarus saundersi) in the Liao River Estuary National Nature Reserve using MaxEnt.

Conservation of breeding habitats is essential for sustaining populations of endangered waterbirds, yet quantitative links between breeding behavior and environmental drivers remain poorly understood. Saunders's Gull (Saundersilarus saundersi), a globally endangered species, has its largest breeding population in the Liao River Estuary National Nature Reserve (LRENNR), China. We integrated field survey data (53 sampling points, 24 environmental variables) with Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) modeling and GIS analysis to identify suitable breeding habitats and key environmental drivers. Blood UV absorbents in urban breeding herring gulls: Annual environmental conditions, not anthropogenic habitat use, drive exposure.

Urban-adapted wildlife foraging in coastal areas are exposed to mixtures of synthetic contaminants, including ultraviolet absorbents (UVAs), such as benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BZT-UVs) and organic UV filters (UVFs). Herring gulls (Larus argentatus), known for their foraging plasticity, are particularly susceptible to UVA exposure due to their reliance on anthropogenic habitats, including landfills, known as sinks of products containing UVAs. However, the impact of foraging habitat on exposure is unknown. We aimed to investigate this relationship in gulls along the St. Lawrence estuary near

Legacy and emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in eggs of yellow-legged gulls from Southern France.

More than 70 years of industrial production of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have resulted in their ubiquitous presence in the environment on a global scale, although differences in sources, transport and fate lead to variability of occurrence in the environment. Gull eggs are excellent bioindicators of environmental pollution, especially for persistent organic pollutants such as PFAS, known to bioaccumulate in organisms and to be deposited in bird eggs by maternal transfer. Using yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) eggs, we investigated the occurrence of more than 30 PFAS, inc

Sod farms drive habitat selection of a migratory grassland shorebird during a critical stopover period.

Migratory shorebirds are one of the fastest declining groups of North American avifauna. Yet, relatively little is known about how these species select habitat during migration. We explored the habitat selection of Buff-breasted Sandpipers (Calidris subruficollis) during spring and fall migration through the Texas Coastal Plain, a major stopover region for this species. Using tracking data from 118 birds compiled over 4 years, we found Buff-breasted Sandpipers selected intensively managed crops such as sod and short-stature crop fields, but generally avoided rangeland and areas near trees and

The relationship between mercury and selenium in the eggshell and egg content of the Whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybridus).

Mercury and its compounds do not have beneficial biological roles in living organisms. In contrast, selenium, within permissible limits, is an essential micronutrient and antioxidant. There is an antagonistic relationship between mercury and selenium. Therefore, the molar ratio of selenium to mercury is used as an appropriate index. Measuring the mercury in the environment without considering the protective effects of selenium does not accurately reflect the risks posed by mercury. This study aimed to measure the mercury, selenium, and the molar ratio Se:Hg in the shell and content of the eggs

Climate change in the Arctic: Testing the poleward expansion of ticks and tick-borne diseases.

Climate change is most strongly felt in the polar regions of the world, with significant impacts on the species that live there. The arrival of parasites and pathogens from more temperate areas may become a significant problem for these populations, but current observations of parasite presence often lack a historical reference of prior absence. Observations in the high Arctic of the seabird tick Ixodes uriae suggested that this species expanded poleward in the last two decades in relation to climate change. As this tick can have a direct impact on the breeding success of its seabird hosts and

Decadal differences in polycyclic aromatic compound (PAC) concentrations in two seabird species in Arctic Canada.

Seabirds are exposed to a variety of environmental contaminants in the Arctic. While the persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of some groups of contaminants have been well-studied in seabirds since the 1970s, there is less known about polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs). With increased vessel traffic, and potential oil and gas development in the Arctic region, there is a need to understand existing PAC exposure in biota against which to compare potential effects of anticipated increases of PACs in the marine region. Thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia) and northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacia
