Tempeh-type fermentation kinetics of tarwi (Lupinus mutabilis) and red quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) with Rhizopus oligosporus: effects on texture, metabolite profile and nutritional potential.

Tempeh is a solid-state fermented food traditionally produced from soybeans using fungi of the genus Rhizopus, which modify the nutritional and functional properties of the substrate. The search for alternative raw materials has increased interest in underutilized Andean crops such as tarwi (Lupinus mutabilis cv. Cholo Fuerte) and quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa cv. Pasankalla), recognized for their high nutritional value and potential for sustainable food development. This study investigated the growth kinetics of Rhizopus oligosporus during nine days of tempeh-type fermentation of tarwi and quino

Comparative role of betalains and other key antioxidant metabolites in the photoprotection against acute exposure to UV-B radiation in Chenopodium quinoa and C. berlandieri seedlings.

Chenopodium quinoa Willd. is a betalainic crop with remarkable tolerance to extreme environmental conditions. Despite numerous varieties grow at high altitudes, where UV-B radiation is intense, research on the effects of UV-B stress on this and related species is very scarce. In the present work we aimed to determine whether UV-B radiation induces the production of betalains, and evaluated the role of these pigments and other key antioxidants in preventing oxidative damage, in seedlings of C. quinoa (ecotypes CICA and Villarrica) and its close relative C. berlandieri Moq., grown in darkness an

Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADESs) for the Extraction of Bioactive Compounds from Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) Leaves: A Semi-Quantitative Analysis Using High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have emerged as a promising eco-friendly alternative to petrochemicals for extracting plant metabolites. Considering that the demand for sustainable "green" ingredients for industrial applications is growing, those solvents are purported to develop extracts with interesting phytochemical fingerprints and biological activities. Given the interest in flavonoids from Chenopodium quinoa Willd. leaves, an efficient "green" extraction method was developed by investigating eight NADESs with defined molar ratios, i.e., malic acid-choline chloride (chcl)-water (w

Cuticular uptake of xenobiotics into living plants. Part 2: influence of the xenobiotic dose on the uptake of bentazone, epoxiconazole and pyraclostrobin, applied in the presence of various surfactants, into Chenopodium album, Sinapis alba and Triticum aestivum leaves.

This study has determined the uptake of three pesticides, applied as commercial or model formulations in the presence of a wide range of surfactants, into the leaves of three plant species (bentazone into Chenopodium album L. and Sinapis alba L., epoxiconazole and pyraclostrobin into Triticum aestivum L.). The results have confirmed previous findings that the initial dose (nmol mm(-2)) of xenobiotic applied to plant foliage is a strong, positive determinant of uptake. This held true for all the pesticide formulations studied, although surfactant concentration was found to have an effect. The l

Identification and characterization of a putative novel tri-segmented rhabdovirus infecting Humulus scandens.

A putative novel tri-segmented rhabdovirus, tentatively named Humulus trirhavirus 1 (HuTRV1), was identified from mosaic and chlorotic leaves of Humulus scandens in Shenyang, Liaoning, China. Using high-throughput sequencing, RT-PCR and RACE, HuTRV1 was found to comprise three genomic segments (RNA1, RNA2, RNA3) of 6,674, 4,417, and 4,094 nucleotides (nt) respectively. Its genome organization resembles that of Chenopodium trirhavirus 1 identified from Chenopodium album in China, containing eight open reading frames (ORFs) encoding putative L, N, P2-P4, and P6-P8 proteins. All these proteins sh

Assessing degree of flowering implicates multiple Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae species in allergy.

BACKGROUND: IgE-mediated sensitization to the Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae families is a cause of allergic symptoms in arid areas. Salsola kali and Chenopodium album are considered the main species responsible; however, there is a discrepancy between the pollination period of these two plants and clinical symptoms. The objectives of this study were to identify new Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae members with sensitization capacity and to correlate symptoms, pollen counts and degree of flowering of different species. METHODS: A total of 37 individuals monosensitized to S. kali and C. album were i
