Mechanical effects and volatile sulfur compound-reducing effects of chewing gums: comparison between test and base gums and a control group.

OBJECTIVE: Chewing gum may act as a masking or a therapeutic agent against the different chemical compounds that are responsible for oral malodor. An open-label exploratory study investigated the effect of mastication and aromatic components of chewing gum on reducing oral volatile sulfur compounds. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Twelve dental students (5 males and 7 females) acted as their own controls. Toothbrushing stopped 12 hours before observations. Measurements included organoleptic and volatile sulfur compound scores and the pH of the anterior and posterior zones of the dorsal tongue. Measurem

Effects of French Pine Bark Extract Chewing Gum on Oral Malodor and Salivary Bacteria.

Frequent or persistent malodor (halitosis) represents a considerable embarrassment to those affected. French pine bark extract, Pycnogenol® (PYC), has displayed antibacterial activity against a broad range of bacterial species. In the present study, anticipated benefits of PYC on diminishing halitosis were investigated. Ten healthy males and 11 females, aged 40.1±12.3 y, were recruited based on threshold breath sulfur compounds presence, diagnosed by portable gas chromatography. Subjects were randomly assigned to either sugar-free gums, or gums bearing an additional 2.5 mg PYC per piece. The s

Effect of eucalyptus-extract chewing gum on oral malodor: a double-masked, randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Eucalyptus extracts were found to possess an antibacterial activity against some oral pathogens that produce oral malodor compounds in vitro; however, the clinical effects with respect to oral malodor in humans remain unproven. In the present investigation, a randomized clinical study was designed to test the hypothesis that eucalyptus-extract chewing gum can reduce oral malodor in the general adult population. METHODS: Subjects were randomly assigned to the following three groups: a high-concentration (0.6% eucalyptus extract) group (n = 32), a low-concentration (0.4% eucalyptus

Value of the chewing gum test for the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis: a multicentre pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a vasculitis that can lead to visual impairment. Jaw claudication (JC), a key clinical feature of GCA, is associated with an increased risk of visual complications. We hypothesized that the chewing gum test (CGT) could reveal JC that is not identified through anamnesis alone. METHOD: We conducted a prospective multicentre study including patients with suspected GCA between October 2019 and December 2021. The CGT was performed twice, in a blinded manner, before the initiation of any corticosteroid therapy. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predicti

The use of coffee, chewing-gum and gastrograffin in the management of postoperative ileus: A review of current evidence.

Postoperative ileus is one of the main complications in the postoperative period. New measures appeared with the introduction of «fast-track surgery» to accelerate recovery: coffee, chewing gum and gastrograffin. We performed a summary of current evidence, reviewing articles from MEDLINE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ISI Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases. Employed search terms were «postoperative ileus» AND («definition» OR «epidemiology» OR «risk factors» OR «Management»). We selected 44 articles: 9 systematic reviews 11 narrative reviews, 13 randomized clinical trials, 6 obser

Chewing gum and risk of oesophageal adenocarcinoma: a new hypothesis tested in a population-based study.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that chewing gum is associated with risk of oesophageal and cardia adenocarcinoma. A Swedish nationwide, population-based, case-control study was conducted in 1995-1997. All patients were prospectively and uniformly documented and classified shortly after diagnosis. In all, 189 and 262 patients with oesophageal and cardia adenocarcinoma, respectively, and 820 population-based control subjects were interviewed. These patients together constituted 85% of eligible cases occurring in Sweden. Odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were c

Chewing Gum Is Associated with Better Diet Quality but Not Oral Health Measures in U.S. Adults.

OBJECTIVE: Chewing gum (especially sugar-free gum) has been linked to improved oral health, however there is an absence of observational research using nationally-representative data in the United States. We sought to examine the factors associated with chewing gum and its relationship with the oral health status of U.S. adults. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2018 cycles were used in these analyses. Primary outcomes were the odds of having gum disease, treatment for gum disease, ever being told of bone loss around tee

A cluster randomized trial of xylitol chewing gum for prevention of preterm birth: The PPaX trial.

BACKGROUND: Maternal periodontal disease is associated with preterm and low-birthweight deliveries, but randomized trials of likely efficacious treatments (e.g., dental scaling and root planing) during pregnancy have not reduced these adverse outcomes. As an alternative, we hypothesized that periconception initiation of xylitol chewing gum would reduce the occurrence of preterm or low-birthweight deliveries among a historical high-prevalence population in Malawi. METHODS: We conducted an open-label, parallel-enrollment, matched-pair, cluster-randomized, controlled clinical trial across eight

Chewing gum in the preoperative fasting period: an analysis of de-identified incidents reported to webAIRS.

The role of preoperative fasting is well established in current anaesthetic practice with different guidelines for clear fluids and food. However, chewing gum may not be categorised as either food or drink by some patients, and may not always be specified in instructions given to patients about preoperative fasting. The aim of this paper was to review anaesthesia incidents involving gum chewing reported to webAIRS to obtain information on the risks, if any, of gum chewing during the preoperative fasting period. There were nine incidents involving chewing gum reported between late 2009 and earl

Oesophageal acid and salivary secretion: is chewing gum a treatment option for gastro-oesophageal reflux?

The presence of acid in the oesophagus has been shown to stimulate salivary secretion, but the relevance of this oesophago-salivary reflex for acid clearance in physiological and pathological gastro-oesophageal reflux (GOR) is unknown. This study was designed to investigate the interrelation between oesophageal acid and both resting and stimulated salivary secretion. In 10 healthy volunteers, the acid clearance times after bolus infusion of 20 ml of 0.1 N hydrochloric acid were measured by means of ambulatory oesophageal pH monitoring. With a constant swallowing rate and resting salivary flow,

The effect of zinc-containing chewing gum on volatile sulfur-containing compounds in the oral cavity.

Volatile sulfur-containing compounds (VSC) are known to constitute the major component of halitosis. Aqueous solutions of zinc salts have been shown to reduce the levels of VSC produced orally. The aim of the present study was to examine whether zinc could be made available in the oral cavity and inhibit VSC production when delivered by a chewing gum. VSC measurements were carried out on the 'morning breath' of 11 test subjects and re-examined after the use of test solutions containing 0.02% zinc chloride, 0.2% chlorhexidine, or water or the use of chewing gums containing 2 mg, 0.5 mg, or 0 mg
