OBJECTIVES: Haiti remains a principal placement country for intercountry adoptees to the United States. This project reports the health status of children adopted from Haiti arriving to the U.S. and compares them to intercountry adoptees from other regions.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted of adoptees placed in the U.S. from Haiti (n=87), age and sex matched with intercountry adoptees placed in the U.S. from Asia (n=87) and Latin America (n=87) between January 2010 and November 2019. Data on immunization status, contagious diseases, and nutrition and growth were analyzed vi

Holding postures to resist uninhibited detrusor contractions are illustrated and discussed. These postures were observed in children with urodynamically proved unstable bladders. The majority of the holding postures involved compressing the urethral meatus or the perineum in girls, or contracting all of the skeletal muscles or squeezing the glans penis in boys. The holding posture required the child to remain still. Younger children used straightforward holding postures, while older children adopted more sophisticated and less recognizable positions. These clinical observations seem to suggest

Children have the right to be brought up in safe environments. However, this right is often infringed by people who are supposed to provide love, care, and protection to children. These people can include biological fathers, step-fathers, brothers, cousins, aunts, mothers, and uncles. Violation of children takes place in a variety of ways, however, for the purpose of this paper, the focus is on child sexual abuse within the family system. A literature review is adopted as the methodology for the discussions in this paper. The purpose of this paper is firstly to demonstrate that child sexual ab

UNLABELLED: Early puberty is frequently observed in adopted children. This randomized trial treated 30 adopted children with early puberty and short stature with either gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa) alone or in combination with growth hormone (GH) for 3 y. Before the start of treatment (T1) in the trial and at discontinuation (T2) the children and their parents underwent a psychological evaluation. At the start of treatment the children did not have increased levels of behavioural or emotional problems as assessed by the Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL). During treatment the C

The extent to which being adopted increases a child's risk for the development of adjustment problems has been debated for decades. Results from studies examining prevalence of adopted children and adolescents in outpatient and inpatient mental health treatment suggest that the risk associated with adoption is modest or nonexistent. This body of research is reviewed and critiqued. Two possible explanations for the apparent disparate findings of the clinically based and nonclinically based studies are explored: biases in referral for mental health treatment and the influence of the shape of the

We investigate the prevalence, specificity and possible aetiology of Disinhibited Attachment Disorder (DAD) in adopted children without a history of institutional care. Sixty children adopted from UK out-of-home care (AD; mean age 102 months, 45 % male); 26 clinic-referred children with externalizing disorder (ED; mean age 104 months, 77 % male) but no history of maltreatment or disrupted care; and 55 matched low-risk comparison controls (LR; mean age 108 months, 49 % male) were assessed for DAD using a triangulation of parent, teacher, and research observations. OBJECTIVE: In recent years a number of children have been adopted to Iceland. The aim of our study was to evaluate which factors may affect their mental and behavioural health.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Information was collected on the health of internationally adopted children in Iceland as well as on pre-adoptive risk factors. This was done using a survey developed by Dr. Dana Johnson from the International Adoption Project at the University of Minnesota in the United States. Other questionnaires include the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Strenghts and Difficulties Questionnaires (SDQ), Atte

BACKGROUND: Experience in institutional/orphanage care has been linked to increased mental health problems. Research suggests that children adopted from institutions experience specific difficulties related to inattention/overactivity. Evidence of internalizing and conduct problems relative to non-adopted peers has been found in early childhood and early adolescence, but problems may not differ from other adopted children. This study clarifies the understanding of behavioral and emotional symptoms of post-institutionalized (PI) children during middle childhood.
METHODS: Eight- to eleven-year-

BACKGROUND: Children adopted from foster care are at heightened risk for emotional and behavioral challenges, potentially due to early trauma exposure and related risk factors. Research has demonstrated that adoptees with greater pre-adoptive risk exhibit higher rates of internalizing and externalizing problems across childhood and into adulthood. However, these studies have been limited by their use of individual risk factors or sum scores of cumulative risk and their measurement of internalizing and externalizing behaviors separately.
OBJECTIVE: The current study aimed to examine effects of

Child Sexual Abuse is an alarming reality and is being increasingly reportedin India as well as globally. Pediatricians and allied medical professionals are often the first point of contact with abused children and their families. They have a key role in detecting Child Sexual Abuse, providing immediate and long-term care and support to the victims and their families. India has adopted the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) in 2012. It is a comprehensive law on sexual abuse, which expands the scope and range of forms of sexual offences, makes reporting of abuse mandatory a

This report describes a dual isolation technique adopted to isolate the lungs from one another at the time of right pneumonectomy in a child (age: 5 yrs, 10 kg weight) with evidence of infective lung disease associated with copious purulent secretion and compromised respiratory function. The isolation of right lung from left was achieved by placing Fogarty embolectomy catheter in right main bronchus and a plain polyvinylchloride endotracheal tube (which was aseptically preshaped to have a distal 45 degrees angulation towards left) in left main bronchus. No soiling of left lung occurred during

OBJECTIVE: To assess 6-year-old cocaine- and noncocaine-exposed children's mental health outcomes controlling for potential confounders.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 322 children [169 cocaine exposed (CE) and 153 noncocaine exposed (NCE)] enrolled in a longitudinal study since birth. At age 6, children were assessed for mental health symptoms using the Dominic Interactive (DI), a child self-report measure, and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), a caregiver report of behavioral problems.
RESULTS: CE children were more likely to self-report symptoms in the probable clinical range for opp

BACKGROUND: Parental characteristics and practices predict borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms in children. However, it is difficult to disentangle whether these effects are genetically or environmentally mediated. The present study examines the contributions of genetic and environmental influences by comparing the effects of familial risk factors (i.e. parental psychopathology and borderline traits, maladaptive parenting, marital discord) on child BPD traits in genetically related (biological) and non-related (adoptive) families.
METHODS: Data are from 409 adoptive and 208 biologi

The increasing availability of donor insemination (DI) gives couples faced with male infertility a choice between DI and adoption, and for many, DI is now the preferred option. The results of a study of 54 couples who gave birth to a child or children by means of DI are presented both quantitatively and qualitatively, and show that most couples who have children by DI have considered adoption. Their reasons for choosing DI range from the practical to the emotional, from perceived negative aspects of adoption to perceived advantages of DI. This article discusses these perceptions and their impl

INTRODUCTION: The Federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau defines Children with special health care needs (CSHCN) as those who have, or are at increased risk for, chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional conditions, and require health and related services beyond what is generally required by other children. More than half of the entire Italian internationally adopted children (IAC) population has special needs. This monocentric retrospective study aims to describe the demographic features and prevalence of several chronic conditions in a large cohort of IAC.
METHODS: Between

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the Salut Programme, a universal health promotion intervention, compared with care-as-usual, over the periods of pregnancy, delivery and the child's first 2 years of life.
METHOD: We adopted a register-based retrospective observational design using existing data sources with respect to both exposures and outcomes. Health outcomes and costs were compared between geographical areas that received care-as-usual (non-Salut area) and areas where the programme was implemented (Salut area). We included mothers and their c

BACKGROUND AND SCOPE: The focus of this review is on institutionalized children, one of the most inequitably and severely treated groups of children. Although institutions vary, many share some common characteristics, including large groups, high children: caregiver ratios, many and changing caregivers, and caregiver-child interactions that lack warm, sensitive, contingently-responsive, and child-directed behaviors. Resident children develop poorly physically, mentally, and social-emotionally, but those adopted from institutions display substantial catch-up growth in many domains of developmen
