Baby v mother.

The right of a child born disabled as a result of a negligent act committed by another whilst the child was in utero is a recognized principle of law in the major common law countries. It is also recognized that a child who suffers injuries caused to it due to a negligent act committed prior to conception may also have a right to seek compensation. The right to bring such an action is contingent upon the child being born alive and being able to prove a causal connection between the alleged negligent act and the injuries complained of. However, with few exceptions, such legal actions have to da

Benefits to Down's syndrome children through training their mothers.

This study investigated the hypothesis that training of mothers with Down's syndrome children would be beneficial both to the child and parents. The mothers were taught behaviour modification techniques based on learning theory and were given group discussions on dealing with their family or personal problems. The subjects were 16 mothers with a Down's syndrome child, divided into two groups on the basis of their child's sex and chronological and mental ages. The Griffiths Scale was used for assessment. The mothers in the treatment group received 12 sessions of training and group counseling ov

Understanding Online Child Sexual Exploitation Offenses.

In the past three decades, there has been an exponential increase in the worldwide availability of Internet access and devices that are able to access online materials. This literature review investigated whether increased accessibility of Internet child pornography (CP) increases the risk of in-person child sexual exploitation. The current review found little to no evidence that availability of the Internet has increased the worldwide incidence or prevalence of in-person child sexual abuse. In fact, during the time period in which the Internet has flourished, international crime statistics ha

Mental health of preschool children and their mothers in a mixed urban/rural population. II. Family and maternal factors and child behaviour.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which certain maternal, child and family characteristics are associated in families with a 3-year-old child were examined. METHOD: A total population of families with a 3-year-old child and living in the New Forest were identified. Measures of child behaviour and the maternal GHQ-30 were obtained. RESULTS: Whereas behaviour problems were found to be significantly associated with all maternal and family factors (except social class), difficult temperament was only related to mother's recall of their own childhood as unhappy and overactivity was only significantly ass

Antihypertensive Therapy in Females: A Clinical Review Across the Lifespan.

Hypertension affects one-third of all females in the United States, with the prevalence increasing over a female's lifespan. The approach to treating females with hypertension varies depending on a female's age, race, comorbidities, and whether she is of child-bearing age or pregnant. It is important to factor in the safety and effectiveness of antihypertensive medications across these populations of females. Blood pressure target goals are the same in females as in males regardless of comorbidities or stage of life, with the exception of those females who are pregnant. Recommendations for ant

Multi-center-validated machine learning model for cervical cancer based on human papillomavirus genotyping results.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of gynecologic cancer-related mortality worldwide, with human papillomavirus (HPV) testing being a key screening tool. However, current guidelines often categorize high-risk HPV types broadly, overlooking their varying oncogenic potentials. This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning model to predict cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia grade (CIN) 2 or worse (CIN2+) using HPV genotyping, cytology results, and patient age. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using data from 52,063 patients (61,022 clinical records)

Nature and boundaries of phonologic categories: a case study of an unusual phonologic pattern in a language-impaired child.

This paper presents a detailed examination of an unusual phonologic pattern reflected in the speech of a language-impaired child. The most salient characteristic of this child's speech was the use of [s] in final position of all words except those containing final oral or nasal bilabials. Her pattern seemed best described as reflecting only two canonical forms for word production, CVC and CVCVC, and a dominant word-final category possessing a family resemblance structure with [s] as the prototype. Training was instituted to increase the number of appropriate categories in the child's phonologi

German Version of the Child Sexual Abuse Myth Scale (CSAMS-G): Translation, Expansion, and Construct Validation.

Research is needed on the myths regarding child sexual abuse in order to address commonly held misconceptions in persons training for professional careers in relevant fields for child protection. We present our translated, validated, and expanded Child Sexual Abuse Myth Scale (CSAMS-G). It was tested on a sample of 569 students studying either education, social work, law, or policing. Results of confirmatory factor analysis revealed a good model fit for our assumed factorial structure. Acceptable results on internal consistency were confirmed with McDonald's ω. We also present the first result

Waardenburg-Shah Syndrome: a rare case in an Indian child.

A 7-year-old male child presented with a history of discolouration of right eye since birth. On examination visual acuity was 6/6 on Snellen's chart in both eyes; anterior segment was within normal limits except for the brilliant blue discolouration of the inferior quadrant and superior quadrant of right iris and left eye iris, respectively. Both eyes had a clear lens and fundus findings were within normal limits. A detailed history from parents revealed that the child had difficulty in hearing and slurring of speech. In addition, the child had repeated episodes of constipation with bilious vo

Acetylcholinesterase and manometry in the diagnosis of the constipated child.

We studied 309 constipated infants and children who underwent rectal manometry (n = 261) and/or punch rectal biopsy, in which acetylcholinesterase histochemistry (n = 124) was compared with routine histologic examination (n = 93) for diagnostic accuracy. A 99% diagnostic accuracy was achieved with acetylcholinesterase histochemistry compared with 61% accuracy with routine hematoxylin-eosin staining on punch rectal biopsy. We recommend screening cooperative, quiet patients with rectal manometry. Most patients with abnormal manometric studies or those on whom manometry cannot be performed should

Secondary Deinococcus proteolyticus Infection Following Varicella-Zoster Virus Infection in a Child: A Case Report Describing a Rare Medical Condition.

Deinococcus proteolyticus belongs to Deinococcaceae, a family of bacteria characterized by an exceptional ability to withstand the lethal effects of DNA-damaging agents, including ionizing radiation, ultraviolet (UV) light, and desiccation. It was isolated from the Sahara surface sands, an extreme and nutrient-poor environment, regularly exposed to intense UV radiation, cycles of extreme temperatures, and desiccation. D. proteolyticus infection has seldom been implicated in human infections. The child presented with multiple necrotic skin lesions following a varicella infection, later complica

Use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for bronchoscopic removal of a tracheal foreign body in a child.

BACKGROUND: Bronchoscopic removal of a foreign body is a common emergency procedure in paediatric otolaryngology. It is potentially life-threatening, as complete airway obstruction caused by the foreign body can lead to hypoxic cardiac arrest during the manipulation of the object. CASE REPORT: This paper presents a child who had aspirated a foreign body that could not be extracted conventionally via rigid bronchoscopy in the first instance. Subsequently, it was extracted at repeat bronchoscopy under controlled respiratory conditions maintained by an extracorporeal gas exchange circuit - extra

[Clinical characteristics of tuberculosis in childhood].

Tuberculosis is a serious disease for world health and there has been an increase in the number of cases in recent years. Children are the most vulnerable to infection, with a greater risk of developing the disease and with a greater frequency of its serious forms. In spite of that, it is exceptional for them to develop bacilliferous TB, with its treatment not playing a great role in the epidemiological control of the disease. However, the treatment of latent tuberculosis infection in children avoids development of the disease and the study of familial contacts can help the diagnosis, treatmen

Idiopathic partial epilepsy: electroclinical demonstration of a prolonged seizure with sequential rolandic and occipital involvement. Seizure spread due to regional susceptibility?

Benign rolandic epilepsy (BRE) and childhood epilepsy with occipital paroxysms (CEOP) are overlapping in age range of presentation. Some children have been reported to manifest occipital and rolandic seizures, as distinct events. However, the presence during the same seizure of rolandic and occipital symptoms is exceptional. We present a 7-year-old boy with BRE in whom we video-EEG recorded two seizures at 4 years of age. The first episode was a classic rolandic seizure during sleep, while the second was prolonged with initial rolandic and late occipital involvement. It is possible that a rola

AIDS following mother-to-child transmission of HIV-2.

Mother-to-child infection with HIV-2 is thought to be rare, and there have been few previous reports of transmission by this route. Reports of morbidity associated with HIV-2 infection in children are also rare. We describe eight children born to mothers who were infected with HIV-2; five developed AIDS, and three were still seropositive at 17-49 months of age. The only apparent route of HIV-2 transmission was from mother to child, except for one child who had been transfused. Three of the children with AIDS died, all having decreased CD4+ lymphocytes and mitogen responses. Further studies are

Enuresis in child psychiatric clinic patients.

The clinical profile and the outcome of 386 enuretic children attending a child psychiatric clinic were studied and compared with 2,404 other child psychiatric cases assessed during the same period. The profiles of developmental and family history, psychiatric diagnoses, specific delays in development at assessment, and intelligence resembled each other. The only exceptions were an overrepresentation of delayed developmental milestones in the history and an underrepresentation of neuroses and eating disorders among enuretics.

Rare Double Reciprocal Translocations in a Man with Reproductive Success and Recurrent Pregnancy Loss.

Double reciprocal translocations represent an extremely rare cytogenetic entity. Carriers have a significantly increased risk of producing unbalanced gametes during meiosis, which can lead to adverse reproductive outcomes such as miscarriages or offspring with congenital anomalies. Despite the high reproductive risk, they can give birth either to a balanced translocation carrier with a normal phenotype (similar to the parents) or to a chromosomally normal completely healthy infant, resulting only from alternate 2:2 segregation. Here, we report an exceptional case of double-balanced reciprocal

Pearls and Pitfalls of Pediatric Scrotal Imaging.

Ultrasonography (US) is the primary imaging modality for the evaluation of pediatric scrotal disease. The ability to obtain exceptional anatomical detail and testicular perfusion information without ionizing radiation makes it the essential tool for evaluating scrotal pain and palpable masses. Challenges arise in both the performance and interpretation of scrotal US in the child. Optimizing imaging parameters and recognizing key differentiating US features help minimize misinterpretations that can lead to poor patient outcomes. Key pearls and pitfalls in pediatric scrotal ultrasound methods an

[Adenocarcinoma of the endolymphatic sac in children. A case report].

We report a case of an adenocarcinoma of the endolymphatic sac in a 13 years old child, which was fortuitously discovered at the time of radiological investigation of growth delay. Arising from the end of the endolymphatic sac, this rare tumour shares a similar clinic expression with other cerebellopontine angle pathologies. Radiological investigation reveals a moth eaten appearance to the posterior temporal bone and specific bony inclusions. With MRI there is an intense and/or intermediate signal on T1, a hyper signal on T2 and T1 enhancement with injection of gadolinium. Treatment is surgica
