The single parent family and the child's mental health.

The prevalence of psychiatric and psychosomatic disorders in a 1 year birth cohort from northern Finland followed up until 19 years was examined on the basis of hospital records and national registers for subsidies for chronically sick children. Psychiatric disorders were found to occur with higher frequency in children of single parent families, especially those lacking a father during the child's whole life. Childhood enuresis was most frequent in the children who had experienced the divorce of their parents. Discriminant function analysis was used to establish the explanatory value of the f

The ecological context of child health in Saudi Arabia.

The general background to child health in Saudi Arabia is reviewed. Information is provided on the social and demographic characteristics of the population, on common health indicators, on the health care system and its utilization, and on the general pattern of childhood morbidity and mortality. The unprecendented socioeconomic development has transformed the health care system. In 15 years the number of nurses have increased from 3261 to 29896, physicians from 1172 to 14335, primary health care centers from 591 to 1821, and hospital beds from 9036 to 30707. In spite of this progress, the dis

The effects of birth spacing on child and maternal health.

Child and maternal mortality and morbidity are examined in relation to the interval between pregnancies. Most data available pertain to child mortality. Very little reliable information links child morbidity or maternal health detriments to short birth spacing. The evidence on child mortality suggests that very short intervals (conceptions less than six months after a birth) are detrimental to survival of the second child, but these results must be viewed in light of the methodological difficulties of studies of this subject. Policy implications of the data are perhaps less clear than is somet

Quality assurance for health supervision of the ambulatory child.

The Joint Committee on Quality Assurance (JCQA) was established in 1970 by the American Academy of Pediatrics and includes members from eight organizations concerned with primary care for children. The Committee developed criteria for assessing (1) health supervision of children, and (2) the management of three common diseases of children: tonsillopharyngitis, urinary tract infection, and bronchial asthma. These criteria were then validated by 452 academic and practitioner experts. A representative sample of primary care physicians further evaluated these criteria. The last phase of the study

Germany's Verschickungskinder: parent-child separation and mental health.

Background: Parent-child separations have been associated with adverse health and well-being, with most research focusing on prolonged separations driven by war, famine or disease. Verschickungskinder ('sent-away children') - the eight to twelve million German children who, in the decades following World War II, were separated from their families for several weeks to stay in so-called children's health resorts - represent a largely overlooked case of short-term separation. Despite growing recognition of adverse experiences and abuse in these settings, little is known about the long-term mental

Redesigning Pediatric Preventive Care to Advance Child Health.

Pediatric preventive care, beginning at birth and extending through young adulthood to support the health of children, is a cornerstone of pediatric primary care, supporting the physical, developmental, and mental health of children through periodic health supervision visits, also known as "well-child care". Pediatric preventive care visits provide opportunities to monitor growth and development, identify physical and mental health conditions early, deliver disease prevention and health promotion services, offer anticipatory guidance and education to improve child safety and well-being, and pr

Breastfeeding and Child Oral Health: An Umbrella Review.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is associated with infant health benefits, such as a reduced risk of infections, obesity, and diabetes, and offers protection against breast and ovarian cancer in mothers. However, its possible relationship with dental caries and malocclusions has recently been suggested. RESEARCH AIM: The present umbrella review assessed the relationship between breastfeeding and oral health. METHODS: This umbrella review evaluated the relationship between breastfeeding and oral health in individuals under 18 years of age by systematically reviewing studies available in databases s

Rainfall shocks and child health in rural Pakistan.

In utero exposure to income shocks has a lasting effect on child well-being. In an agricultural economy, fluctuations in rainfall directly affect household income. In this paper, we investigate the short- and long-run impact of pre-pregnancy, prenatal, and early-life exposure to fluctuations in rainfall on height for a sample of 2290 children in rural Pakistan. Given the widespread canal irrigation system prevalent in the country, we also investigate how fluctuations in river water flows affect child health. We find that fluctuations in rainfall during the pre-pregnancy period have the most la

Protecting Child Health From Air Pollution in India.

Recent research has underscored the diverse ways in which air pollution detrimentally affects child health in India. Notably, India shoulders one of the highest burdens of mortality of children under five years of age globally due to exposure to air pollution. Distinct mitigation strategies are vital to reduce air pollution exposure and its resultant health burdens among children in India when compared to strategies applicable in the global West. This necessity arises due to the substantial influence of residential combustion of solid fuels, and considerable disparities prevalent among India's

Maternal and child health in Israel: building lives.

Israel is home to a child-oriented society that values strong family ties, universal child benefits, and free education for all children from 3 years of age to school grade 12. Alongside the universal health-care services that are guaranteed by the National Health Insurance Law and strong, community-based primary and preventive care services, these values have resulted in good maternal and child health. In 2015, infant and maternal mortality (3·1 deaths per 1000 livebirths and 2·0 deaths per 100 000 livebirths, respectively) were lower than the mean infant and maternal mortality of countries w

Documentation of Child Maltreatment in Electronic Health Records.

International Classification of Diseases codes for child maltreatment can aid surveillance and research, but the extent to which they are used is not well established. We documented prevalence of the use of maltreatment-related codes, examined demographic characteristics of youth assigned these codes, and compared results with previous studies. Data were extracted from electronic health records of 0- to 21-year-olds assigned 1 of 15 maltreatment-related International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, codes who had encounters in a large medical system over a 4-year period. Only 0.02%

Zinc--essential micronutrient for child health and nutrition.

Ubicuity of zinc in nature has generally lead to the idea that human zinc deficiency is hardly to appear; however, the last 40 years of research studies showed clear correlation between zinc deficiency and several clinic manifestations: growth retardation, predisposal to infections, delay of wound healing, hypogonadism in boys. Zinc plays multiple roles, especially in pregnant women and children. Although the issue of micronutrient malnutrition has been pointed out in developing countries, it has been remarked also in developed ones, due to unbalanced nutrition and diets. The article aims poin

Documents concerning history of medicine during the Turkish reign (1552-1716) are very rare. However, there is evidence of plague epidemic in 18th century and colera epidemic in the 19th century. The first medical institutions: The German Communal Hospital, The Serbian Hospital and the Pharmacy were founded in the second half of the 18th century. In the year 1803, children were vaccinated against variola.
