Sensory Experiences and Children With Severe Disabilities: Impacts on Learning.

The human sensory system is continuously engaged in experiencing and interpreting every interaction with other living beings, objects, and the environment. The purpose of this article is to describe the impact limited opportunities for rich sensory experiences have on students with severe disabilities in two middle school classrooms situated in a public separate school in the southeastern USA. The study employed a postcritical ethnographic approach and grounded theory thematic analysis of fieldnotes gathered over a two-year period. Three major themes supported by the data are presented and dis

[Cancer in children with intellectual disabilities: Questioning and ethical issues].

The Parents and Caregivers group in the face of ethics in pediatrics of the Île-de-France Ethics Area wondered about the association of the words Disability and Cancer by focusing on the study of the course of children with intellectual disability, treated for cancer. These situations are exceptional, the number of cases in France must not be more than fifty per year. We gathered the testimony of five families of children using a semi-directive survey taking up the journey from birth, announcement of the handicap, the diagnosis of cancer and its treatment. The verbatim show that each story is

Improving Learning Outcomes: The iPad and Preschool Children with Disabilities.

The digital age has reached early childhood, and the use of touch screens by young children is common place. Research on the use of touch screen tablets with young children is becoming more prevalent; however, less information is available on the use of touch screen tablets to support young children with disabilities. Touch screen tablets may offer possibilities to preschool children with disabilities to participate in learning in a digital way. The iPad provides easy interaction on the touch screen and access to a multitude of engaging early learning applications. This paper summarizes a pilo

Written cohesion in children with and without language learning disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Cohesion refers to the linguistic elements of discourse that contribute to its continuity and is an important element to consider as part of written language intervention, especially in children with language learning disabilities (LLD). There is substantial evidence that children with LLD perform more poorly than typically developing (TD) peers on measures of cohesion in spoken language and on written transcription measures; however, there is far less research comparing groups on cohesion as a measure of written language across genres. AIMS: The current study addresses this gap t

Transportation use patterns of U.S. children and teenagers with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the differences in disabled and nondisabled children's travel patterns, means of transportation, and problems in getting needed transportation. METHODS: Data from the 2002 Transportation Availability and Use Survey for Persons with Disabilities (NTAUSPD) were used to make comparisons between children (≤17 years) with disabilities and children without disabilities. Disability was defined as meeting the criteria of at least one of three disability measures: responding yes to any of the national disability questions from the 2000 U.S. Census, meeting provisions

Oral health status in Greek children and teenagers, with disabilities.

Nowadays there is a sharp increase of population with disabilities. The aim of this investigation was a) to survey the dental health status, estimate the treatment requirements of children and adolescents with cerebral palsy, mental retardation and visual disorders and b) to compare the oral health status of these groups of individuals. The investigation entailed the clinical examination of 170 individuals, between 6 and 15 years old, who were attending four special schools in Athens, Greece. In conclusion, our investigation documented the following: The treatment needs regarding both dentitio

Exercise programmes in the treatment of children with learning disabilities.

Learning disability is characterised by a discrepancy between achievement and assessed intellectual ability. Children with this problem commonly (but not invariably) show impaired motor proficiency, as assessed by such instruments as the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of motor proficiency. It has been hypothesised that poor motor performance and/or poor social skills lead to exclusion from games, creating a vicious cycle of decreasing participation, decreasing competence, a deterioration of self-worth and increasing social maladjustment. Attempts to break the vicious cycle with programmes designed t

Tactile defensiveness in children with developmental disabilities: responsiveness and habituation.

Tactile defensiveness (TD) is characterized by behaviors such as rubbing, scratching, negative expressions, withdrawal, or avoidance in response to tactile stimulation. An inhibition deficit has been implied in the literature and is the focus of this study. School-aged children with developmental disabilities were first assessed for level of TD using three measures. Later, the children were presented with a repeated tactile stimulus while engaged in a computer game. Intensity, duration, and latency of the responses were recorded on each trial. It was hypothesized that higher levels of TD would

Electrophysiological evidence of lateralized disturbances in children with learning disabilities.

This study used an electrophysiological measurement operation to investigate lateralized processing deficits associated with academic learning-disability subtypes. Fast frequency EEG activity in the 36-44 hertz (Hz) band was recorded from reading-disabled (RLD), arithmetic-disabled (ALD), and nondisabled control children engaged in verbal and nonverbal cognitive tasks. The control group, but neither LD group, exhibited a task-dependent shift in lateralization of 40 Hz EEG; the RLD subjects generated proportionately less left-hemisphere 40 Hz activity than control or ALD subjects during the ver

Patterns of cerebral arterial injury in children with neurological disabilities.

We reviewed the data from 215 consecutively imaged children who were referred because of neurologic disease. We specifically looked for evidence of cerebral arterial infarction in the form of focal brain damage in an arterial vascular distribution. Twenty-eight showed an arterial infarction pattern. All the major cerebral arteries were involved: middle cerebral artery, 17/28; posterior cerebral artery, 7/28; anterior cerebral artery, 2/28; carotid, 2/28; and vertebro-basilar, 1/28. Six of the 28 subjects had disorders reported to be associated with cerebrovascular damage. Another 13 subjects h

Embodied expressiveness: Children with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities' interactions with professionals.

BACKGROUND: This article addresses epistemological challenges arising when children who communicate through gestures are excluded from disability research. We encourage researchers to incorporate the gestures of these children into future research projects. METHOD: By methodically analysing embodied phenomenological anecdotes and considering the works of Merleau-Ponty and Foucault, we illustrate how professionals foster embodied interactions and use queer objects in educational settings. RESULTS: The results show how professional practitioners exhibited perception, patience and interpretatio
