Year-round testicular volume and semen quality evaluations in captive Chinchilla lanigera.

In mammals, reproductive performance is usually associated with seasons. Chinchilla lanigera, an endemic South American rodent, reproduces throughout the year in captivity but its seasonal breeding pattern is not fully understood. The present study was designed to evaluate (bi-weekly) over 1 year: (1) testicular volume variations and (2) seminal volume, sperm concentration and functional activity changes. Five animals were studied; they were individually housed indoors (22.2 +/- 1.0 degrees C) under natural photoperiod in Argentina (Córdoba, 31 degrees S-64 degrees W). Semen was obtained by el

Effects of topical sodium potassium ATPase inhibitors upon endocochlear potential in chinchilla.

Sodium orthovanadate (vanadate) is a recently discovered inhibitor of the enzyme sodium potassium adenosine triphosphatase, which has properties similar to ouabain in peripheral tissues. The effects of topical application of vanadate and ouabain to the round window membrane of the chinchilla were studied using endocochlear potential (EP) and action potential as measures of cochlear function. The EP demonstrated an initial elevation followed by a secondary decline after topical application of 2 mmol vanadate to the round window membrane. During the EP elevation, the resistance was unchanged, bu

Surface Motion of Tympanic Membrane in a Chinchilla Model of Acute Otitis Media.

The conductive hearing loss caused by acute otitis media (AOM) is commonly related to a reduction of the tympanic membrane (TM) mobility in response to sound stimuli. However, spatial alterations of the TM surface motion associated with AOM have rarely been addressed. In this study, the TM surface motion was determined using scanning laser Doppler vibrometry (SLDV) in a chinchilla model of AOM. The AOM was established by transbullar injection of nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae. The TM surface vibration was measured in control (uninfected) animals and two AOM groups of animals: 4 days (4D) a

Safety of transtympanic application of 4 % manuka honey in a chinchilla animal model.

The antimicrobial and anti-biofilm properties of manuka honey (MH) are currently being explored in the treatment of chronic recalcitrant rhinosinusitis. Due to similarities between chronic rhinosinusitis and chronic otitis, manuka honey may find applications in the management of challenging cases of chronic otitis media implicating biofilms. The goal of this study was to investigate the safety of topical application of 4 % MH in the middle ear. Eleven adult female chinchillas had one of their ears randomly assigned to receive transtympanic 4 % MH, while the contralateral ear served as control.

Chinchilla laniger can be used as an experimental model for Taenia solium taeniasis.

Chinchilla laniger has been reported as an experimental definitive host for Taenia solium; however no information about its suitability and yield of gravid tapeworm proglottids containing viable and infective eggs has been published. In total 55 outbred female chinchillas were infected with 4 cysticerci each; hosts were immunodeppressed with 6 or 8 mg of methyl-prednisolone acetate every 14 days starting the day of infection and their discomfort was followed. Kinetics of coproantigen ELISA or expelled proglottids was used to define the infection status. Efficiency of tapeworm establishment was

Gas diffusion across the tympanic membrane in chinchillas: effect of repeated perforations.

OBJECTIVE: Earlier studies documented a slow diffusion of gas across the tympanic membrane (TM) in humans and animals. However, structural changes caused by repeated TM perforations could affect gas diffusion rates. This possibility was evaluated using a chinchilla model. METHODS: In six chinchillas, the right TM was perforated four times at 2-week intervals; the left TM served as a control. Approximately 12 weeks after the fourth perforation and when the right TMs had healed, a probe was introduced into the external canal and sealed to the environment. For 120 min, pressure in the probe was

Effects of prolonged noise exposure in chinchillas with severed middle ear muscles.

Using the round window-recorded cochlear microphonic as the index of acoustic reflex activity, we noted a decay in the strength of middle ear muscle contraction in the chinchilla following an eight hour exposure to octave band noise (500 Hz. center frequency, 95 dB. sound pressure level). On the basis of this observation it was concluded that the prolonged exposure reduced the effectiveness of the acoustic reflex in protecting the cochlea. This reduction, however, may have been underestimated if the exposure was also sufficient to reduce cochlear output. The present investigation examined this

[Double infection of the brain with Frenkelia species and Toxoplasma gondii in Chinchilla laniger].

Two caged Chinchillas that died with convulsions had a focal necrotic meningoencephalitis of toxoplasmic origin. Independently of and remote from this inflammatory reaction were several lobulated Frenkelia cysts up to 0.6 mm diameter in the brain. Morphologically and in the way they stained they resembled Frenkelia in various Microtus-species and in Ondatra zibethica. Although toxoplasmosis commonly is found in the Chinchilla this is the first report of Frenkelia in this species. Ecological considerations suggest that the Chinchilla might be susceptible to a Frankelia usually occurring in free

Ocular Surface Disease in Rodents (Guinea Pigs, Mice, Rats, Chinchillas).

This article discusses the clinical appearance, differential diagnoses, and treatment considerations of corneal disease in the most common domesticated species of rodent: mouse, rat, chinchilla, and guinea pig. Many corneal diseases are related to inbred strains of either research or pet rodents. Diseases are complicated by husbandry and treatment-related challenges in this small, social species. This article is broken down by species, first discussing normal anatomy, then discussing commonly encountered diseases, and concluding with treatment considerations.

Insensitivity of the audiogram to carboplatin induced inner hair cell loss in chinchillas.

Noise trauma, aging, and ototoxicity preferentially damage the outer hair cells of the inner ear, leading to increased hearing thresholds and poorer frequency resolution. Whereas outer hair cells make synaptic connections with less than 10% of afferent auditory nerve fibers (type-II), inner hair cells make connections with over 90% of afferents (type-I). Despite these extensive connections, little is known about how selective inner hair cell loss impacts hearing. In chinchillas, moderate to high doses of the anticancer compound carboplatin produce selective inner hair cell and type-I afferent

A mechano-acoustic model of the effect of superior canal dehiscence on hearing in chinchilla.

Superior canal dehiscence (SCD) is a pathological condition of the ear that can cause a conductive hearing loss. The effect of SCD (a hole in the bony wall of the superior semicircular canal) on chinchilla middle- and inner-ear mechanics is analyzed with a circuit model of the dehiscence. The model is used to predict the effect of dehiscence on auditory sensitivity and mechanics. These predictions are compared to previously published measurements of dehiscence related changes in chinchilla cochlear potential, middle-ear input admittance and stapes velocity. The comparisons show that the model

Suitability of formaldehyde-treated acellular dermis for tympanic membrane repair in chinchillas.

HYPOTHESIS: Formalin-fixed acellular dermis (AlloDerm; LifeCell Corporation, Branchberg, NJ, USA) is safe and efficacious for tympanoplasty in the chinchilla model as compared with the established technique of nonfixed acellular dermis tympanoplasty. BACKGROUND: Temporalis fascia autografts have been shown safe and effective in the treatment of near-total tympanic membrane (TM) perforations. The formalin-fixation technique first described by Perkins allows the autologous fascia graft to be shaped to more closely resemble the natural TM and has been successful but somewhat cumbersome. The use

The development of the middle ear in neonatal chinchillas II. Two weeks to adulthood.

Studies of auditory function in the human neonate indicate adult-like hearing sensitivity, mature cochlear function and well-developed responses in the auditory pathway. Paradoxically, measurements of middle ear function are characterized by responses that would be interpreted as abnormal in older subjects. Consequently, there is not an accepted clinical test for middle ear disease in the newborn population. Like human neonates, chinchillas have normal hearing sensitivity at birth, but middle ear function tested by multifrequency tympanometry is abnormal compared to the adult. A previous study

Microdialysis studies of the middle ear distribution kinetics of amoxicillin in the awake chinchilla.

This work was performed to develop an experimental animal model for the study of antibiotic drug distribution into middle ear fluid (MEF) and to evaluate its relevance and significance to the clinical treatment of otitis media (OM). Chinchillas were assigned to normal or infected ear groups after Eustachian tube obstruction (ETO) or direct trans-bullar inoculation with type 3 Streptococcus pneumoniae. Following survival surgery to implant microdialysis (MD) probes in the jugular vein and middle ear (ME), amoxicillin was given intravenously (iv) as a bolus or infusion. Drug concentrations in bl

The effect of impulse intensity and the number of impulses on hearing and cochlear pathology in the chinchilla.

Forty-one chinchillas, divided into seven groups, were exposed to 1, 10, or 100 noise impulses (one every 3s) having peak intensities of 131, 135, 139, or 147 dB. Hearing thresholds were measured in each animal before and after exposure using an avoidance conditioning procedure; a surface preparation of the cochlear sensory epithelia was performed approximately 90 days after exposure. There was generally an orderly relation between the amount of permanent threshold shift and the severity of exposure, and a general agreement between averaged histological data and the audiometric data. For the i

Effect of high intensity impulse noise on the vascular system of the chinchilla cochlea.

Changes in the vasculature of the chinchilla cochlea were quantitatively assessed 45 days after impulse noise exposure of either 155- or 160-dB peak sound pressure level. The condition of the vessels in the lateral wall and spiral lamina of each cochlea was evaluated in terms of 20 morphological parameters. Multivariate statistical analysis identified the parameters that were significantly affected by the noise exposure. Evaluation of these significant parameters indicated a net reduction in blood flow to the cochlea. All of the noise-exposed cochleas showed vascular changes when compared to c

Acoustic reflex decay in chinchillas during a long-term exposure to noise.

Reflex decay to 0.5 kHz octave-band noise at 95 dB SPL was measured in chinchillas during four 2-hr exposure periods separated by 11-min quiet intervals. Round window electrodes were implanted in six animals. Measures of acoustic reflex decay were inferred from amplitude changes in the cochlear microphonic generated by the octave-band noise. Reflex decay followed essentially the same time course during each exposure period. Vigorous muscular contraction to the signal onset was followed by gradual decay that asymptoted between 30 and 50% of its initial value. The process of decay seemed to be c

Effects of oxygen inhalation on noise-induced threshold shifts in humans and chinchillas.

Experiments with both humans and chinchillas indicate that the temporary threshold shift after ten-minute stimulation with 100 dB sound pressure level 1 kHz tone diminished more quickly if the subject breathed pure oxygen and it diminished even more quickly when 95% oxygen-5% carbon dioxide was inhaled rather than ambient air. This effect was observed for both poststimulatory and per-stimulatory gas inhalation.
