A Re-Evaluation of Chironomid Deformities as an Environmental Stress Response: Avoiding Survivorship Bias and Testing Noncontaminant Biological Factors.

Larval deformities have been observed in chironomids, and are thought to be associated with aquatic contaminant exposure. However, in laboratory assays, deformities have not been linked with contaminants in the absence of potential confounding variables including mortality, which introduces a survivorship bias. There is also a paucity of data on noncontaminant causes. In addition, power analyses are rarely undertaken, meaning that effect sizes detectable are usually uncertain. We therefore aimed to clarify factors associated with deformities, by running survivorship bias-free (i.e., sublethal)

Eutrophication and predator presence overrule the effects of temperature on mosquito survival and development.

Adequate predictions of mosquito-borne disease risk require an understanding of the relevant drivers governing mosquito populations. Since previous studies have focused mainly on the role of temperature, here we assessed the effects of other important ecological variables (predation, nutrient availability, presence of conspecifics) in conjunction with the role of temperature on mosquito life history parameters. We carried out two mesocosm experiments with the common brown house mosquito, Culex pipiens, a confirmed vector for West Nile Virus, Usutu and Sindbis, and a controphic species; the har

Cross-reactivity between IgE-binding proteins from Anisakis, German cockroach, and chironomids.

Anisakis simplex larvae parasitize animals used as seafood and can produce a specific immune response in man. The ingestion of seafood contaminated with stage three of A. simplex larvae can induce a specific IgE response with clinical symptoms, usually urticaria, even if the fish is cooked before ingestion and the invasive infestation power destroyed by heating. Our preliminary studies showed a strong association of A. simplex sensitization with Ascaris lumbricoides, Daphnia, chironomid spp., Atlantic shrimp (Pandalus borealis), and German cockroach (Blattella germanica). We conducted the cros

Protein labelling with 3H-NSP (N-succinimidyl-[2,3-3H]propionate).

A tritium compound with low molecular weight and diameter, N-succinimidyl-[2,3-3H]-propionate (3H-NSP), was used to label histones and nonhistone proteins from calf thymus, and nuclear and total salivary gland proteins from larvae of the midge Chironomus thummi. Labelled proteins were visualized after electrophoresis in 10% polyacrylamide slab gels by fluorography. The method is much more sensitive than staining procedures, allowing to discern approx. 0.1 microgram protein.

Identification of Chironomus kiiensis allergens, a dominant species of non-biting midges in Korea.

Non-biting midges are known to contain potent inhalant allergens. IgE antibody responses to the crude extract of Chironomus kiiensis adults, a dominant chironomid species in Korea, were examined. With the IgE-ELISA or passive cutaneous anaphylaxis reactions, increased levels of chironomid-specific IgE were detected in the skin test positive human sera, or immunized BALB/c mouse sera with the crude extract adsorbed to alum. IgE-immunoblot analysis showed major IgE-reacting protein band patterns, which reacted with more than 50% of the skin test positive human sera, at 110, 80, 73, 46, 40, 37, 3

Diversity of pollination ecology in the Schismatoglottis Calyptrata Complex Clade (Araceae).

Field studies integrating pollination investigations with an assessment of floral scent composition and thermogenesis in tropical aroids are rather few. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the pollination biology of nine species belonging to Schismatoglottis Calyptrata Complex Clade. The flowering mechanism, visiting insect activities, reproductive system, thermogenesis and floral scent composition were examined. Anthesis for all species started at dawn and lasted 25-29 h. Colocasiomyia (Diptera, Drosophilidae) are considered the main pollinators for all the investigated species. Cycreon (Co

Influence of remediation on sediment toxicity within the Grand Calumet River, Indiana, USA.

The Grand Calumet River (GCR), located in northern Indiana, is contaminated due to a wide range of historical industrial activities. This study was conducted to determine the influence of sediment remediation within the GCR on concentrations of chemical contaminants and toxicity to sediment-dwelling organisms. Between 2005 and 2016, sediments with high concentrations of metals and toxic organic compounds were remediated through a combination of removal, addition of activated carbon and organoclay amendments, and capping with sand or relatively uncontaminated sediment. Short-term and long-term

Effects of cadmium on life-cycle parameters in a multi-generation study with Chironomus riparius following a pre-exposure of populations to two different tributyltin concentrations for several generations.

So far only a few studies have been performed to assess the effects of dynamic pollutant exposure on life-history parameters of invertebrates. In a previous multi-generation approach with the midge Chironomus riparius we tested if a chronic tributyltin pre-exposure alters the ability of a population to cope with subsequent cadmium stress. In the experiment two separate chironomid populations were exposed via sediments to different TBT-concentrations (4.46 and 8.93 μg Sn/kg dw) for several generations, followed by subsequent cadmium exposure (1.2 mg Cd/kg dw) for three generations. While the TB

Histamine release from human basophils by the insect allergen Chi t I.

Hemoglobins of the Diptera species Chironomus thummi thummi (Chi t I) are potent inhalant allergens. Chi t I-specific histamine release was measured by a new radioimmunoassay in whole human blood taken from 20 sensitized patients, 11 exposed nonsensitized probands, and 11 nonexposed controls. The sensitized patients, who all had positive skin tests and radioallergosorbent test results with Chi t I, showed a significantly higher histamine release than the two other groups. However, within the patient group, the percentage of released histamine did not correlate with the intensity of the skin te

Hypersensitivity to chironomid larvae.

Chironomid larvae (red midge larvae) are often used by aquarists as fish food. Their hemoglobins can cause IgE-mediated allergic diseases in exposed and unexposed people. The aim of this study was to find out the prevalence of positive skin tests to chironomids in patients suffering from rhinitis and/or bronchial asthma in Ciudad Real (Spain). A total of 465 patients were submitted to skin prick tests with chironomids in addition to common inhalant allergens. The patients with positive skin prick test (wheal > or = 3 mm) to these larvae answered a questionnaire. Skin prick tests with Acarus si

Vibrio cholerae and Aeromonas: do they share a mutual host?

Species of the genus Aeromonas are native inhabitants of aquatic environments and have recently been considered as an emergent human pathogen. It is estimated that aeromonads cause up to 13% of reported gastroenteritis cases in the United States. Although the autochthonous existence of Aeromonas in the aquatic environment has been established, its natural reservoir is as yet unknown. Chironomids are closely related to mosquitoes except they do not bite and they are the most widely distributed insects in freshwater. They infest drinking water systems in Israel and all over the world. Vibrio cho

Study on the effects of hydrological connectivity on the dispersal and driving factors of macroinvertebrate communities.

Dispersal is crucial for the distribution of macroinvertebrate populations and communities. However, research on the dispersal of macroinvertebrates after dam demolition remains limited. Studying the impact processes and driving factors of dam demolition on the dispersal capacity of macroinvertebrate communities can help in the development of effective strategies for river ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation. Therefore, this study conducted continuous monthly surveys, monitoring drifting macroinvertebrates in the Jiuchong River of Shennongjia National Park from 2022 and 2023 (b

Active feeding of downstream migrating juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) revealed in a large Barents Sea river using diet and stable isotope analysis.

The recent, rapid spreading of non-native pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha in the North Atlantic area has raised concerns about their possible negative impacts on native salmonid species. Potential interactions include competition for food resources during the short freshwater phase of juvenile O. gorbuscha, but little is known about their feeding behavior in the newly occupied North Atlantic rivers. Using stable isotope and stomach content analyses, patterns of freshwater feeding of non-native O. gorbuscha fry were studied in a large Fennoscandian river, the Teno, that discharges to the Bar

Profiling of RNA Viruses in Biting Midges (Ceratopogonidae) and Related Diptera from Kenya Using Metagenomics and Metabarcoding Analysis.

Vector-borne diseases (VBDs) cause enormous health burden worldwide, as they account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases and over 700,000 deaths each year. A significant number of these VBDs are caused by RNA virus pathogens. Here, we used metagenomics and metabarcoding analysis to characterize RNA viruses and their insect hosts among biting midges from Kenya. We identified a total of 15 phylogenetically distinct insect-specific viruses. These viruses fall into six families, with one virus falling in the recently proposed negevirus taxon. The six virus families include Partitiviridae,

Characterization of heat shock protein 40 and 90 in Chironomus riparius larvae: effects of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate exposure on gene expressions and mouthpart deformities.

Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widely distributed phthalate that organisms are frequently exposed to due to its wide range of commercial and manufacturing uses as a plasticizer. Indeed, DEHP is often found in freshwater systems that receive domestic waste water discharges. Therefore, we evaluated the effects of DEHP on the mRNA levels of heat shock protein (HSP) 40 and 90 in chironomids. In addition, we evaluated the effects of exposure to DEHP on the induction of morphological deformities in chironomids. To accomplish this, partial sequences of HSP 40 and 90 from Chironomus riparius l

A multi-platform metabolomics approach demonstrates changes in energy metabolism and the transsulfuration pathway in Chironomus tepperi following exposure to zinc.

Measuring biological responses in resident biota is a commonly used approach to monitoring polluted habitats. The challenge is to choose sensitive and, ideally, stressor-specific endpoints that reflect the responses of the ecosystem. Metabolomics is a potentially useful approach for identifying sensitive and consistent responses since it provides a holistic view to understanding the effects of exposure to chemicals upon the physiological functioning of organisms. In this study, we exposed the aquatic non-biting midge, Chironomus tepperi, to two concentrations of zinc chloride and measured glob

Combined effects of environmentally relevant concentrations of diclofenac and cadmium on Chironomus riparius larvae.

The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac (DCF) is considered a contaminant of emerging concern. DCF can co-exist with heavy metals in aquatic environments, causing unexpected risks to aquatic organisms. This study aimed to assess the combined effects of DCF and cadmium (Cd) at environmentally relevant concentrations on the bioconcentration and status of oxidative stress and detoxification in Chironomus riparius larvae. The larvae were exposed to DCF (2 and 20 μg L-1) and Cd (5 and 50 μg L-1) alone or in mixtures for 48 h. The combined exposure to DCF and Cd was found to reciprocally

Calcium nitrate addition to control the internal load of phosphorus from sediments of a tropical eutrophic reservoir: microcosm experiments.

The main objective of this study was to perform laboratory experiments on calcium nitrate addition to sediments of a tropical eutrophic urban reservoir (Ibirité reservoir, SE Brazil) to immobilize the reactive soluble phosphorus (RSP) and to evaluate possible geochemical changes and toxic effects caused by this treatment. Reductions of 75 and 89% in the concentration of RSP were observed in the water column and interstitial water, respectively, after 145 days of nitrate addition. The nitrate application increased the rate of autotrophic denitrification, causing a consumption of 98% of the adde
