Updated list of bat species positive for rabies in Brazil.

This paper presents an updated list of bat species positive for rabies in Brazil. It was developed based on database research via the internet, of international and national literature and annals of the most important technical and scientific meetings related to rabies and chiroptera in Brazil from 1996 to 2009. The new list of rabies positive bats consists of 41 species, belonging to 25 genera and three families: Phyllostomidae 43.9%, Vespertilionidae 29.3% and Molossidae 26.8%. In addition, questions were raised regarding the lack of data, including sex, age, circumstances and location of ba

[Hantavirus causing fatal haemorrhagic fever in the Czech Republic].

Hantaviruses are RNA viruses of the family Bunyaviridae. Their hosts are mammals of the orders rodents (voles, rats, mice), insectivores (shrews, moles), and chiroptera (bats). Hantaviruses are present in many areas of Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. In the Czech Republic, the occurrence of five species of hantaviruses has been reported (Dobrava/Belgrade, Puumala, Tula, Seewis, and Asikkala), with the first three of them causing human diseases. Although the course of hantavirus infections can be very serious, there is a low awareness of these diseases, even among health professionals,

Redescription and taxonomical considerations about Aonchotheca (Aonchotheca) pulchra n. comb. (Enoplida: Trichuridae), a nematode of Nyctinomops spp.

Pterothominx pulchra (Freitas, 1934) are little known gastric nematodes of Nyctinomops laticaudatus (Chiroptera: Molossidae). Information about the occurrence and host range of these parasites in Neotropical region is still scanty, and the only two morphological descriptions available in the literature are divergent about the presence or absence of a spiny spicular sheath in males, which may lead to incorrect taxonomical positioning, since this feature represents the main difference between the genera Pterothominx and Aonchotheca. Based on the absence of this morphological feature in specimens

Immunoglobulin heavy chain locus duplication in bats.

Bats are major reservoirs of viruses that can be transmitted to humans in zoonotic outbreaks. Antibody-mediated immunity plays an important role in shaping viral evolution and immune evasion but remains understudied in bats. All known mammals have a single immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene locus and up to two light chain loci. We have identified dual IgH loci on separate chromosomes in 26 bat species, highlighting extreme variation of immunogenetic architecture in order Chiroptera. In a model species, Eptesicus fuscus, we leveraged single-cell transcriptomes to confirm functional rearrange

Genetic analysis of phosphoprotein and matrix protein of rabies viruses isolated in Brazil.

To investigate the genetic characteristics of phosphoprotein (P) and matrix protein (M) genes of variable rabies virus (RV) prevalent in Brazil, the authors genetically characterized the P and M genes from 30 Brazilian RV field isolates. Phylogenetic analysis based on the P and M genes revealed the presence of six RV variants that consisted primarily of three insectivorous bats, the vampire bat, dog and fox in Brazil. Specific amino acid substitutions corresponding to these phylogenetic lineages were observed, with Asp(42) and Glu(62) in the P protein found to be characteristic of Brazilian ch

Ecology of bats and their role in emerging zoonotic diseases: a review.

The order Chiroptera is the second largest order of mammals and shows great physiological and ecological diversity. These animals play significant ecological roles as prey and predator as well as facilitating pollination, seed dispersal, arthropod reduction and nutrient distribution and reutilisation in nature. Bats act as hosts to a range of viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic zoonoses. Human activities increase the likelihood of exposure to bats, thereby increasing the opportunity for infections to spill over. Continuing ecological processes, emergence and spillover of novel pathogens in

Not extinct but thriving-The rediscovery of the horseshoe bat fly Phthiridium biarticulatum (Diptera: Nycteribiidae) in the United Kingdom.

Bat flies are haematophagous ectoparasites of bats, which have been infrequently studied in the United Kingdom. Phthiridium biarticulatum Hermann (Diptera: Nycteribiidae) is one of three species of bat fly that have been recorded in the United Kingdom. It was last recorded in 1959 and is considered extinct. We report the presence of P. biarticulatum on Lesser Horseshoe Bats Rhinolophus hipposideros (Bechstein) (Chiroptera: Rhinolophidae) at 14 sites across South West England, with a host infestation rate of 17.1% (58/339) of adult bats across 28 surveyed sites with maternity colonies in buildi

Anatomical and Histological Characterization of the Intestine of Artibeus lituratus.

The order Chiroptera is highly diverse and is the second richest among mammals. Approximately 181 species are known in Brazil, with varied feeding habits that make them essential for ecological functions such as seed dispersal and plant regeneration. Despite the importance of their ecosystem services, the anatomical and histological aspects of the digestive system of these animals are still little explored. The aim of this study was to describe the anatomical and histomorphological aspects of the intestines of A. lituratus. Six individuals were captured in peri-urban areas of Rio Branco, Acre.

Natural mutants in mammalian facial morphology: A review of palate clefting in bats.

Bats (order Chiroptera) exhibit great diversity in the size and shape of their palates. One palate characteristic in particular that diverges from other mammals is the presence of a natural and nonpathological cleft palate in roughly half of the ∼1500 species of bats. Despite being typically detrimental when present in other mammals, bats have repeatedly evolved a midline cleft palate in at least 10 lineages and a bilateral cleft palate at least once and, based on observations presented, possibly more. Additionally, some bats that typically do not have a nonpathological cleft palate have been

[Rabies in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: analysis of surveillance and control actions in the municipal field].

Rabies is an anthropozoonosis characterized by acute viral encephalitis with a lethality rate close to 100%, and it has undergone an epidemiologic transition in which the cycle involving chiroptera is increasing in importance. The scope of this research sought to analyze the rabies surveillance and control actions carried out in municipalities in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Questionnaires were distributed to a representative sample of zoonosis control service managers proportionately calculated in accordance with the Health Regions, according to the State Regionalization Guidance Plan. Wildlife Rabies Virus Dynamics in Alabama, USA, 2020-25.

Wildlife rabies is enzootic in the USA apart from Hawaii. This viral zoonosis perpetuates using mammalian reservoirs within the Chiroptera and Carnivora. In the southeastern USA, the predominant rabies virus variants are associated with raccoons (Procyon lotor) and bats. Besides being enzootic for bat rabies, Alabama is the westernmost USA state for raccoon rabies perpetuation. To assess the recent viral dynamics of wildlife rabies in Alabama, 65 samples of rabid animals were acquired from public health submissions during 2020-25. Rabies virus nucleoprotein gene sequences were generated for ph

Bats as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance determinants: A survey of class 1 integrons in Grey-headed Flying Foxes (Pteropus poliocephalus).

Increasing reports of antimicrobial resistance in wildlife highlight the significance of a One Health approach to managing resistance. We investigated the prevalence and diversity of class 1 integrons, a genetic determinant of resistance, in grey-headed flying foxes, a large fruit bat species belonging to the order Chiroptera. Class 1 integrons were detected in both wild flying foxes (5.3%) and captive flying foxes (41.2%) housed in wildlife rehabilitation facilities. Genes encoding resistance to aminoglycosides, trimethoprim and beta-lactams, and Qac efflux pumps were detected. Analysis of co

Molecular phylogeny of a genetically divergent hantavirus harbored by the Geoffroy's rousette (Rousettus amplexicaudatus), a frugivorous bat species in the Philippines.

The recent discovery of genetically distinct hantaviruses in multiple species of shrews and moles (order Eulipotyphla, families Soricidae and Talpidae) prompted a further exploration of their host diversification and geographic distribution by analyzing lung tissues from 376 fruit bats representing six genera (order Chiroptera, suborder Yinpterochiroptera, family Pteropodidae), collected in the Republic of the Philippines during 2008 to 2013. Hantavirus RNA was detected by RT-PCR in one of 15 Geoffroy's rousettes (Rousettus amplexicaudatus), captured in Quezon Memorial National Park on Luzon I

Musculoskeletal morphogenesis supports the convergent evolution of bat laryngeal echolocation.

The order Chiroptera (bats) is the second largest group of mammals. One of the essential adaptations that have allowed bats to dominate the night skies is laryngeal echolocation, where bats emit ultrasonic pulses and listen to the returned echo to produce high-resolution 'images' of their surroundings. There are two possible scenarios for the evolutionary origin of laryngeal echolocation in bats: (1) a single origin in a common ancestor followed by the secondary loss in Pteropodidae, or (2) two convergent origins in Rhinolophoidea and Yangochiroptera. Although data from palaeontological, anato

Insight into the Epidemiology of Leptospirosis: A Review of Leptospira Isolations from "Unconventional" Hosts.

Leptospirosis is a re-emerging worldwide zoonotic disease. Even though the primary serological test for diagnosis and surveying is the microscopic agglutination test (MAT), isolation remains the gold-standard test to detect Leptospira infections. The leptospirosis transmission is linked to maintenance and accidental hosts. In the epidemiology of Leptospira some serovar are strictly related to specific maintenance hosts; however, in recent years, the bacterium was isolated from an even wider spectrum of species. The aim of this review is to report the isolation of Leptospira strains in animals

Demodex carolliae in a colony of Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata): clinical, pathological and parasitological findings.

Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata) are a frugivorous species native to Central and South America. Despite their importance as a reservoir for zoonotic pathogens and their popularity in zoological collection and as research models, there are relatively few reports on non-zoonotic diseases of bats. Mites of the genus Demodex are obligate commensals of the skin of a range of mammals, are highly host-specific and are not associated with clinical disease when present in low numbers. However, infestation with high numbers can result in severe or even fatal disease and substantially af

In captivity, neotropical Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata) (Chiroptera: Phyllostomidae) reproduce readily, and contraception can constitute an opportunity to prevent uncontrolled reproduction, which can lead to overpopulation as well as inbreeding. The authors developed a safe and efficient work flow, anesthetic, and surgical castration protocol for the reproductive control of a captive population of more than 500 bats housed at the rainforest house at the Vienna Zoo, Austria. An anesthetic protocol using 0.003 mg medetomidine per bat (approximately 0.18 mg/kg) and 0.3 mg keta
