PURPOSE: Femoral head chondroblastoma poses a surgical challenge. Anatomical limitations may lead to increased risk of local recurrence, damage to the articular cartilage, growth disturbances, and/or avascular necrosis (AVN). We are presenting our results with surgical hip dislocation approach with the aim to evaluate its efficacy in preventing recurrence and its safety, preserving a functional hip joint and avoiding complications.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Ten patients were managed using surgical hip dislocation with direct access to femoral head lesions, extended curettage through a modified tr

Clear cell chondrosarcoma (CCCS) is a rare variant of conventional chondrosarcoma with low-grade malignant features that may be confused radiographically and histologically with chondroblastoma. We report a case of a 50-year-old female who presented with 6 months of left hip pain. Initial radiographs demonstrated an osteolytic lesion with adjacent area of sclerosis in the proximal left femur. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a marrow-infiltrative lesion with periosteal reaction and thickened enhancing periosteum. Biopsy of the sclerotic area demonstrated chondroblastoma-like findings, w

BACKGROUND: Epithelioid benign fibrous histiocytoma has been considered a variant of fibrous histiocytoma, but is now considered a distinct entity, typically showing ALK expression. Most show typical morphological features, including an epidermal collarette and large, bland, epithelioid cells. We have recently encountered 2 examples showing an unusual pattern of pericellular calcification, a previously unreported finding.
METHODS: Available slides were reviewed and clinical follow-up was obtained.
RESULTS: These lesions occurred on the chins of a 16-year-old and 19-year-old female and showed

We undertook this retrospective study to determine the rate of recurrence and functional outcome after intralesional curettage for chondroblastoma of bone. The factors associated with aggressive behaviour of the tumour were also analysed. We reviewed 53 patients with histologically-proven chondroblastoma who were treated by intralesional curettage in our unit between 1974 and 2000. They were followed up for at least two years to a maximum of 27 years. Seven (13.2%) had a histologically-proven local recurrence. Three underwent a second intralesional curettage and had no further recurrence. Two

OBJECTIVE: To analyze and compare the radiological and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appearances of chondroblastoma and clear cell chondrosarcoma with histopathological correlation.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Twelve patients with histologically proven chondroblastoma and of another four patients with clear cell chondrosarcoma were investigated by radiographs and MRI (T1-, T2-weighted sequences, intravenous gadolinium application). Additionally, the clinical and radiologic data of seven cases of clear cell chondrosarcoma without available MRI were considered. The localization, calcification of tu

A series of 73 cases of chondroblastoma of bone, a rare benign tumor, was subjected to clinicopathological analysis, 50 cases of it were studied by immunohistochemistry and affinity histochemistry and 3 cases were observed by electron microscopy. In this series, chondroblastomas were found nearly in patients of all age groups, with the peak incidence occurring in the second decade of life. The lesions were more commonly located in long bone metaphyseal portion, especially in the upper end of femur and the head and neck of femur. It was easily misdiagnosed as giant cell tumor of bone, chondroma

To investigate the clinical characteristics of chondroblastoma with an emphasis on lesions located in the long bone diaphysis, we reviewed the clinical data of 7 patients with histologically proven chondroblastoma treated in Tianjin Medical University Cancer Hospital and Fudan University Cancer Hospital between January 1995 and May 2009. There were two rare cases of chondroblastoma in the long bone diaphysis. One patient with a lesion in the tibial diaphysis underwent intralesional curettage and bone grafting, and the postoperative bone function was measured as excellent according to the Ennek

Chondroblastoma is a benign bone tumor, accounting for approximately one percent of all benign bone tumors. It mostly occurs in typical locations such as long bones. Malignant transformation including metastasis has been described in only a few cases. Therefore, we report a unique case of chondroblastoma with tumor manifestation in the 7th decade of life, location of the tumor in the scapula and occurrence of metastasis in the soft tissue of the mandible branch. Due to aggravation of the clinical course, a scapula en bloc resection was performed. The differential diagnosis is discussed and the

Chondroblastoma of bone is a well-characterized entity. When the radiographic features are classic and the lesion is present in typical locations (i.e., epiphysis of a long bone), the diagnosis is often easily established by fine-needle aspiration biopsy and/or surgical curettage. Tumors in unusual locations, in older patients, or when complicated by aneurysmal bone cysts may pose more diagnostic difficulty. We report four examples (three primary and one-recurrent) of chondroblastoma of bone diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy. All patients were men, ranging from 18 to 28 yr of age. Sit

Chondroblastomas are rare benign cartilaginous neoplasms that primarily affect young patients. Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are also rare, accounting for 1-2% of all bone tumors, and can arise either idiopathically or as secondary lesions associated with other tumors, such as giant cell tumors or chondroblastomas. Here, we present a rare case of a secondary aneurysmal bone cyst arising in conjunction with a chondroblastoma located in the left diaphysis of the ulna.

BACKGROUND: Chondroblastoma (CB) is an intermediate tumor of cartilage origin. CB involving the sacrum is a very rare pathology.
CASE SUMMARY: A 17-year-old male with sacral CB was diagnosed as CB during the first surgery, and 18 mo later, the tumor recurred and a second surgery was performed with the same pathology result of CB.
CONCLUSION: We recommend complete removal of the tumor in a timely manner, provided that surgical conditions are met. At the same time, other diseases should be carefully differentiated in terms of imaging or pathological features so as to avoid erroneous diagnostic

BACKGROUND: Treatment of chondroblastoma in the femoral head is challenging owing to the particular location and its aggressive nature. There is little published information to guide the surgeon regarding the appropriate approach to treating a chondroblastoma in this location. We developed a modified trapdoor procedure to address this issue. The primary modification is that the window surface of the femoral head is covered by the ligamentum teres rather than cartilage as in the traditional procedure.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We assessed (1) the clinical presentation of chondroblastoma of the femor

Treating bone loss with complex arthroplasty poses a significant challenge for the arthroplasty surgeon. When considering a reconstructive case after pathologic fracture and oncologic excision, a multidisciplinary approach with reliance on arthroplasty principles is critical. An 18-year-old patient presented with a complex acetabular pathologic fracture through a chondroblastoma with a secondary aneurysmal bone cyst. An outside institution performed a biopsy and placed a hip-spanning external fixator. Multidisciplinary planning led to tumor excision, complex acetabular arthroplasty reconstruct

35-year-old woman suffered prolonged pain in the left shoulder, where an aggressively growing tumor of the proximal humerus was revealed thereafter. The lesion caused massive osteolysis of the metaepiphysis with cortical disruption, but no soft tissue extension was evident. Given the unsatisfactory effect, the ongoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy was prematurely ceased and the resection 13 cm long segment of bone with modular prosthesis replacement followed. Histologically, clear-cut malignant tumor with both the presence of numerous reactive osteoclast-like giant cells and geographic structural d

Background: Chondroblastoma is a rare and benign bone tumor originating from immature chondroblasts. Chondroblastoma typically affects long bones; however, it can also occur in the skull, especially the temporal bone. The anterior skull base is a rare location for this tumor, with only two reported cases. Case Presentation: A 26-year-old woman presented with epiphora in her right eye and progressive proptosis on the same side. She had a previous biopsy that confirmed the presence of a giant cell tumor of the bone and had undergone an unsuccessful endoscopic surgery. A comprehensive endoscopic

Chondroblastoma is a rare cartilaginous benign bone tumor. Chondroblastoma in the temporal bone is also quite rare. Total excision is the main treatment. Data regarding tumor response to radiation therapy (RT) is insufficient. We describe a case of chondroblastoma that was treated with RT following subtotal tumor resection. In this case, the patient was a 14-year-old male who presented with a three-month history of ear fullness and hearing loss in his right ear. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass partly filling the right external auditory canal and the inferior part of the middle ear.

Lesions of bone featuring osteoclast-like giant cells comprise a diverse group of entities, including giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone, chondroblastoma, and aneurysmal bone cyst, among others. The receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL) has been implicated in the pathogenesis of GCT of bone and may play a role in the pathogenesis of other giant cell-rich lesions as well. In addition, RANKL inhibitors (denosumab) have also been shown to have some efficacy in treating some giant cell-rich lesions. Herein, we examine RANKL expression by RNA in situ hybridization in a total of 84 osse

INTRODUCTION: Synovial lipomatosis is a rare disease entity and a very small number of cases have been reported so far. It is characterized by villous proliferation of the synovium with expansion by mature adipose tissue. The etiology is unclear, thought cases can be seen secondary to injury, inflammation, chronic degenerative changes and neoplasms. Etiopathogenesis is still unclear, however is seen secondary to injury, inflammation, chronic degenerative conditions and neoplasms.
