Presumed primary intraocular chondrosarcoma in cats.

Following unilateral enucleation, 4 Domestic Shorthair cats with an average age of 12.5 years (range: 9-16 years) were histologically diagnosed with a presumed primary intraocular chondrosarcoma at the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (Madison, Wisconsin). Medical records and follow-up were available for 3 of the 4 cats. Clinically, only 1 eye was affected in each cat; a mass lesion was noted in 2 cats, and a neoplasm was suspected in the other 2 cats. Grossly, 3 tumors presented as coalescing, poorly demarcated, white, friable masses filling the vitreous and intraocular ch

Clinical outcome of central conventional chondrosarcoma.

INTRODUCTION: Aim of this study was to analyze (1) survival, local recurrence (LR), and metastasis rates between the three histological tumor grades; (2) whether type of treatment and tumor site influenced prognosis for each histologic grade. METHODS: We retrospectively studied 296 patients with central conventional chondrosarcomas (CS) (87 grade 1, 162 grade 2, and 47 grade 3). The femur was the most common site (91 cases), followed by the pelvis (82) and other less frequent sites. Type of surgery was related with histologic grade. Margins were wide in 222 cases, marginal in 23, and intrales

Primary mediastinal chondrosarcoma with Horner's syndrome.

Chondrosarcomas are uncommon tumors of the mediastinum. Cases reported in the literature are chondrosarcomas originating from osteocartilaginous structures; primary chondrosarcomas that have no anatomical relation with cartilaginous structures are rare. They present with myriad symptoms depending on compression of the adjacent structures; but Horner's syndrome, as a symptom, has not been described before. We report a rare case of a large primary mediastinal chondrosarcoma that presented with Horner's syndrome.

Intracranial extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: We present a patient with a dural-based intracranial extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma, which was initially thought to be an atypical meningioma. This rare tumor should be considered in the differential diagnosis of young adults with an aggressive-appearing dural-based lesion. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old woman reported a 3-week history of severe headaches and intermittent nausea and vomiting. Neurological examination revealed right optic nerve swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a large, intensely enhancing extra-axial mass, which appear

Maffucci's syndrome combined with dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma.

We report a rare case of Maffucci's syndrome combined with dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma in the right shoulder girdle developing from pre-existing enchondroma. In this case, magnetic resonance imaging was useful in diagnosing dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma before surgery. T2-weighted imaging was used to distinguish between the cartilaginous component and the dedifferentiated one. Histologically, there was enchondroma in the humerus and grade 2 chondrosarcoma in the scapula. Further, the dedifferentiated tumor had three mesenchymal elements: osteosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, and

Laryngeal Chondrosarcoma: A SEER Database Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Laryngeal chondrosarcoma (LC) is a rare tumor accounting for less than 1% of all laryngeal cancers. While surgery is the primary treatment, national trends in management and outcomes remain poorly defined. This study aimed to analyze incidence, survival, and treatment strategies for LC using the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database. METHODS: Patients with LC diagnosed between 2000 and 2021 were identified from SEER. Demographic, treatment, and survival data were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier analysis and multivariate Cox regression were used to analyze survival out

Intraspinal cervicothoracic junction chondrosarcoma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Chondrosarcoma is an uncommon spinal tumor that can present as an extraskeletal mass. Rarely, these tumors present as dumbbell tumors through the neural foramina, mimicking schwannomas or neurofibromas. OBSERVATIONS: A 46-year-old female presented with 2 years of worsening right-arm radiculopathy. Magnetic resonance imaging of the thoracic spine revealed a peripherally enhancing extramedullary mass through the right T1 foramen and compressing the spinal cord. Computed tomography showed the mass to be partially calcified. She underwent C7-T2 laminectomy and C6-T3 posterior instrume

Primary pulmonary artery chondrosarcoma: case report.

BACKGROUND: Primary pulmonary artery sarcoma (PAS) is a rare tumor that presents like pulmonary embolism (PE), primary chondrosarcoma in the pulmonary artery is even rarer and few studies have been reported. PAS are commonly misinterpreted as in a clinical setting, many patients initially receive anticoagulant and thrombolysis therapy, but failed to respond. Management of this condition is difficult and prognosis is poor. We report a case of primary pulmonary artery chondrosarcoma that was initially misdiagnosed as PE and Inappropriate interventional therapy was performed, but with poor respon

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma: a case report.

Extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm of uncertain differentiation, characterized morphologically by abundant myxoid stroma, a multinodular growth pattern, and uniform cells arranged in strands, clusters, and reticular networks. It usually occurs in adults in the fifth decade, most often in the deep soft tissues of the proximal extremities. The molecular hallmark of this tumor, present in over 90% of cases, is the fusion of NR4A3 with EWSR1 at 22q12.2 or TAF15 at 17q12. Many other tumors with uniform tumor cells embedded in a myxoid matrix can mimic Extraskeletal m

Chondrosarcoma Skull Base: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Chondrosarcomas are primary malignant bone tumor that rarely occurs in the head and neck region. Squash cytology of skull base neoplasm shows atypical chondrocytes and myxoid stroma, which suggests many possibilities like chordoma, chordoid glioma, chordoid meningioma and chondrosarcoma. Isocitrate dehydrogenase gene (IDH) mutations have been reported in 50% to 60% of the head and neck region chondrosarcoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old female came to the outpatient department and complaint of difficulty in walking and swaying to the right side for one year. The radiology wa

Organ Preservation Strategies in Laryngeal Chondrosarcoma.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Laryngeal chondrosarcoma (LC) is a rare, slowly growing malignancy. The preferred treatment is laryngeal preservation surgery (LPS). Some patients may require multiple interventions or total laryngectomy (TL). We investigated risk factors for retreatment and TL, and assessed the impact of LPS on oncological and functional outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Case series METHODS: We searched our institution database for LC. Tumor grading, localization, and margin status were tested as predictors of recurrence and organ preservation. RESULTS: We included 21 patients (seven females, m

Primary maxillary chondrosarcoma: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sarcomas of the head and neck region are rare tumors, constituting less than 1% of malignant neoplasms in this area, of which few cases (20%) originate from bone or cartilage. Chondrosarcoma is a malignant neoplasm that develops in bone, with a predilection for the pelvis, chest wall, and scapula, and is uncommon in the maxilla and jaw. Although this type of lesion has locally aggressive behavior, destroying the affected bone, it can metastasize when it is not diagnosed early and compromise the patient's life. CASE SUMMARY: On intraoral examination of a 32-year-old female with a t

Primary Spinal Intradural Extramedullary Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma.

BACKGROUND: Among chondrosarcomas arising from bones and soft tissues, mesenchymal chondrosarcoma (MCS), especially primary spinal intradural extramedullary MCS, is extremely rare, and only 18 cases have been reported to date. We report an adult case of this rare condition mimicking meningioma. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 42-year-old woman presented with paraplegia and sensory disturbance associated with right-sided Brown-Séquard syndrome following back pain. Magnetic resonance imaging showed an intradural mass in the right dorsal spinal canal with homogeneous enhancement and dural tail sign at the T

Laryngeal chondrosarcoma: a population-based analysis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Laryngeal chondrosarcoma (LC) is a rare entity, reportedly comprising less than 1% of all laryngeal tumors. Consequently, the incidence and survival of patients with this slow-growing tumor has been difficult to study. Our objective was to evaluate incidence, organized by patient demographics, as well as long-term survival trends of this malignancy using a population-based database. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of the United States National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) registry. METHODS: The SEER database was searched fo

Laryngeal chondrosarcoma--ten years of experience.

INTRODUCTION: Laryngeal involvement by cartilaginous tumors is rare. However, although accounting for only 1% of laryngeal tumor pathology, they are the most frequently occurring non-epithelial neoplasms. The most probable location is the endolaryngeal surface of the cricoid cartilage. Their symptoms are variable, depending on the size and location, and may include hoarseness, stridor, and dyspnea. Treatment is based on surgical excision. Some centers take into account the degree of differentiation and whether it is a case of relapse when deciding to perform a radical resection. AIM: To evalu

Orbital chondrosarcoma arising from paranasal sinuses.

Orbital chondrosarcoma arising from paranasal sinuses or from the nasal cavity with orbital extension is highly unusual. The aim of this report is to describe our multidisciplinary experience in the treatment of three patients with extensive sino-orbital chondrosarcomas. The patients were aged 43, 75 and 63 years, and the tumors originated from the maxillary, sphenoidal, and ethmoidal sinuses, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging studies showed homogeneously hypointense lesions on T1-weighted scans, which were hyperintense on T2-weighted images. Intranasal endoscopic surgery alone or in co

Calcaneal myxoid chondrosarcoma: a rare case.

Skeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is an extraordinarily rare neoplasm with a distinct histological morphology. Although it grows slowly, the clinical course was found to be worse than usual chondrosarcoma. We report a case of a skeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma in the calcaneus of a 21-year-old female who presented to us with a feature of gradually increasing benign swelling left foot for last two years. Initial investigations were indicating towards a benign lesion for which excision of the lesion was performed. But intra operative findings were suggestive of an aggressive lesion, and to our utter
