Chorioamnionitis and serum IgM in Wilson-Mikity syndrome.

A total of 753 infants weighing less than 1800 g at birth were studied prospectively and their serum IgM concentrations measured within 72 hours of age. Placentas from 584 of these infants were examined histologically for chorioamnionitis. The results were correlated with chronic respiratory insufficiency. Altogether 101 infants developed chronic respiratory insufficiency of which 22 had bronchopulmonary dysplasia and 35 Wilson-Mikity syndrome. The remaining 44 infants were classified as 'unexplained chronic lung disease'. Mean serum IgM concentration for Wilson-Mikity syndrome was 1.02 g/l wh

CD47 and CD36 expressions in the placenta of mothers with chorioamnionitis.

INTRODUCTION: Chorioamnionitis is the inflammation of the placenta and is histologically defined as the presence of neutrophilic infiltration into the chorio-amnion membrane with and without involvement of the umbilical cord. Currently, the inflammatory mediators involved in the eliciting of inflammatory response is still largely under investigation. CD47 and CD36 are pro-inflammatory molecules that are still under investigation. The aim of this study was to determine the expressions of CD47 and CD36 in the placenta of mothers with chorioamnionitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a cross-sec

Incidence of histologic chorioamnionitis in a rural community hospital.

BACKGROUND: Histological chorioamnionitis (HCA) is a pathological condition defined as an acute inflammation of the amniochorionic membranes which has been linked to a wide range of adverse neonatal events. AIM: The purpose of this study is to identify the incidence of HCA in the rural population and evaluate whether there are significant differences in these incidences within the different clinical parameters of delivery method, gravidity, gestational age, previous cesarean section, reason for cesarean section and body mass index (BMI). METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted on

Differential immunophenotype of macrophages in acute and chronic chorioamnionitis.

AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the involvement and immunophenotype of macrophages in acute chorioamnionitis (ACA) and chronic chorioamnionitis (CCA), marking amniotic fluid infection and anti-fetal rejection, respectively. METHODS: Chorioamniotic membranes from (1) gestational age-matched cases without chorioamnionitis, (2) cases with ACA, and (3) cases with CCA were studied after immunohistochemical staining using antibodies against CD14, CD68, CD163, and DC-SIGN. RESULTS: Macrophages increased prominently in the chorionic trophoblastic layer of both ACA and CCA cases in cont

Chorioamnionitis in the pathogenesis of brain injury in preterm infants.

Chorioamnionitis (or placental infection) is suspected to be a risk factor for brain injury in premature infants. The suggested association between chorioamnionitis and cystic periventricular leukomalacia and cerebral palsy is uncertain because of the variability of study designs and definitions of chorioamnionitis. Improvements in neonatal intensive care may have attenuated the impact of chorioamnionitis on brain health outcomes. Large multicenter studies using rigorous definitions of chorioamnionitis on placental pathologies and quantitative magnetic resonance techniques may offer the optima

[Effect of chorioamnionitis on brain injury in preterm infants].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between chorioamnionitis and brain injury in preterm infants. METHODS: A total of 88 preterm infants (28-34 weeks), who were born between June 2008 and June 2011, were divided into a case group (n=41) and a control group (n=47) according to whether or not they had chorioamnionitis. All the infants were examined by brain ultrasonography periodically after birth and underwent brain diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) between 3 and 7 days after birth. The two groups were compared in terms of the incidence of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) and periventricula

Proteomics/diagnosis of chorioamnionitis and of relationships with the fetal exposome.

Proteomics, a relatively young science, originally emerged as a complement to genomics research. By definition, the goal of proteomics is to provide a snapshot of all the proteins within an organism, tissue or biological sample at a given moment. Proteomics has the ability to single out one or more proteins (biomarkers) that change consistently in affected subjects as compared to those disease-free. From a proteomics perspective, chorioamnionitis poses both challenges and opportunities. Challenges relate to the dynamic course of the inflammatory process, and compartmentalization of the gestati

Subclinical chorioamnionitis as an etiologic factor in preterm deliveries.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to determine the possible relationship between histologic chorioamnionitis and genital tract cultures and their contribution to preterm delivery. METHODS: The study group consisted of 45 preterm and 37 term pregnancies. Cervico-vaginal cultures were obtained from all patients at admission and placentas were histopathologically evaluated and graded for inflammation of the chorial plate, amniochorionic membrane, umbilical cord and villi. Inflammation scores and presence of pathogenic bacteria were compared between the preterm and term patients. RESULTS: Seve

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus as a cause of chorioamnionitis.

BACKGROUND: Chorioamnionitis is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in preterm infants. Only rarely is Staphylococcus aureus implicated. A case of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus causing chorioamnionitis and endometritis is presented. CASE REPORT: A 39-year-old gravida 2 para 1 female, who previously worked as the unit clerk in the pediatric pulmonary unit of a children's hospital, was initially admitted at 22 weeks with a shortened cervix. The patient refused emergency cerclage. She was released from the hospital and returned at 25 4/7 weeks' estimated gestational age with

Chorioamnionitis in relation to gestational outcome in a Swedish population.

In a histopathological study, from a homogeneous Swedish population with a better than average socio-economic standard, placentas from 161 singleton infants small for gestational age (SGA) and 322 singleton infants appropriate for gestational age (AGA) were examined for the presence of inflammation in the placental parenchymal membranes, cord and decidua. Acute chorioamnionitis including funiculitis was found in 13.4% of the total material, in 17% of term AGA-infants (GA, greater than or equal to 38 weeks), in 13% of preterm AGA-infants (less than or equal to 37 weeks) and in 6.8% of SGA-infan

Placental abruption in the preterm gestation: an association with chorioamnionitis.

Thirty-seven women with acute severe preterm placental abruption were compared with a control group of 51 women requiring preterm delivery for a medical complication of pregnancy. Histologic chorioamnionitis and funisitis were present significantly more often in patients with abruption than in control patients (41 versus 4%; P less than .0001). No patient in either group had clinical evidence of chorioamnionitis. We conclude that a significant association exists between preterm placental abruption and histologic chorioamnionitis.

The effect of chorioamnionitis on perinatal outcome in preterm gestation.

Six hundred ninety-eight patients with premature rupture of the membranes between 26 and 34 weeks were managed expectantly without the use of tocolytics or corticosteroids. Of these, 92 (13 per cent) developed chorioamnionitis. Although latency period (defined as the time from rupture of the membranes to the onset of labor) had no correlation with the incidence of chorioamnionitis, the mean latency period was significantly shorter for those gestations complicated by infection. The risk of chorioamnionitis was found to be inversely related to gestational age. The length of labor, once chorioamn

Chorioamnionitis and colonization of the newborn infant with genital mycoplasmas.

To study the role of Mycoplasma hominis and T-mycoplasmas (Ureaplasma urealyticum) in chorioamnionitis, we obtained culture from 249 puerperal women and their babies. The placentas were examined histologically. Infants whose placentas showed inflammation (chorioamnionitis) had cultures positive for T-mycoplasmas more frequently (37.5 per cent) than those with normal placentas (19.0 per cent) (P = 0.021). Colonization with M. hominis was found in 16.0 per cent of the babies and was not significantly associated with chorioamnionitis. Material colonization with mycoplasmas was more frequent (73.4

Chorioamnionitis secondary to Ureaplasma parvum infection: a case report.

OBJECTIVES: Ureaplasma species are the most frequently isolated microorganisms in cases of spontaneous preterm labor, premature rupture of the membranes, or chorioamnionitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A woman at 28+6 weeks of gestation with no apparent history of interest presented at the hospital with contractions. Upon suspicion of chorioamnionitis, the patient was admitted for a low segment transverse cesarean section, which was completed without any complications. The patient was discharged at 7 days. The newborn remained stable and showed no clinical signs of infection. However, on suspicion of

Candida chorioamnionitis associated with late stillbirth: A case report.

Vulvovaginal candidiasis during pregnancy is common, but serious complications, including chorioamnionitis, are infrequent. A 41-year-old woman presented at 37 weeks of gestation with reduced fetal movements, and fetal death in utero was subsequently confirmed on ultrasound. Histopathology of the cord and placenta revealed Candida infection and microabscesses on the umbilical cord. Overall, these features are suggestive of ascending infection, consistent with Candida as the causative organism. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of late stillbirth due to Candida chori
