The chapter outlines the management of a great variety of rare intraparenchymal tumors. For some like medulloblastomas or ependymomas, GKNS has little to offer. For others like neurocytomas, primary central nervous system lymphomas, and papillary pineal tumors the current findings look most hopeful. For choroid plexus papillomas there is currently not enough information to define the role of GKNS in their treatment. Pineal region tumors are a complex and varied group of neoplasms. Their complexity, variety and ethnic variability means that defining the role of GKNS will require continuing rese

Brain tumors which manifest themselves neurologically in the first year of life can be declared "congenital". They are considered to be rare. Of a total of 440 central nervous system neoplasms in children, operated between 1951 and 1978, 24 (5,4%) congenital tumors were noted. The Authors report a clinical picture and the follow-up. The histology and topographical distribution of this series of tumors is compared to the literature data. The frequency of supratentorial tumors (15 cases; 62,5%) was much higher than that of infratentorial masses (9 cases); 37,5%). The high incidence of astrocytom

INTRODUCTION: Choroid plexus tumors are rare neuroectodermal tumors that arise from the choroid plexus. Choroid plexus papillomas (CPPs) represent the lowest grade of these types of tumors and have a WHO grade I designation. Despite their typical low grade, some CPPs can exhibit aggressive behaviors including parenchymal invasion and dissemination throughout the neuro-axis. Due to their association with the choroid plexus, patients with CPP commonly present with signs and symptoms of hydrocephalus and increased intracranial pressure.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-year-old male presented in extremis

The European Choroid plexus Scientific Forum (ECSF), held in Heidelberg, Germany between the 7th and 9th of November 2023, involved 21 speakers from eight countries. ECSF focused on discussing cutting-edge fundamental and medical research related to the development and functions of the choroid plexus and its implications for health, aging, and disease, including choroid plexus tumors. In addition to new findings in this expanding field, innovative approaches, animal models and 3D in vitro models were showcased to encourage further investigation into choroid plexus and cerebrospinal fluid roles

This case report describes clinical, surgical, MR, and pathologic findings of an intraventricular fibroma, a rare, benign mesenchymal neoplasm. Relatively isointense with normal brain parenchyma on T1-weighted images, the tumor exhibited hyperintense signal on T2-weighted pulse sequences and enhanced intensely and homogeneously after intravenous administration of gadopentetate dimeglumine. Choroid plexus papilloma/carcinoma, meningioma, ependymoma, and subependymal giant cell astrocytoma should be included in the differential diagnosis.

Intracranial xanthogranulomas (XG) are a rare benign histiocytic neoplasm and most often within the choroid. The majority are asymptomatic and are found incidentally on imaging or post-mortem examination or autopsy. We present a case of symptomatic XG in a pregnant patient who underwent a delayed transcortical, transventricular approach for lateral ventricle XG resection following the completion of her pregnancy. Four years post-operatively, the patient is neurologically intact and without recurrence. Our review of the literature showed differences among XG depending on location. The clinical

A 2-year-old male entire Cane Corso was presented for investigations into a 1-week history of ambulatory paraparesis and pelvic limb ataxia gradually deteriorating. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed intraventricular space-occupying lesions affecting the fourth ventricle and lateral apertures and intradural-extramedullary space-occupying lesions at the level of C7 vertebra, L4-L5, and L7-S1 intervertebral disk spaces. Due to poor quality of life, the patient was euthanized. A post-mortem examination revealed partially encapsulated, multifocally infiltrative, and moderately cellular neop

A child is described who, following surgery and irradiation for malignant choroid plexus papilloma at the age of 11 months, developed three further tumors: A benign myxofibroma of the cranium at the age of 3 1/2 years, an undifferentiated anaplastic tumor of his clavicle at 7 1/2 years, and a chondroblastic osteogenic sarcoma of his pelvis at the age of 12 years. There was no apparent genetic predispositions to malignancy. The latter three neoplasms may have originated either in, or at the edge of, the original radiotherapy field, suggesting that the child has a particular susceptibility to th

We report chromosome results from 108 pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors. From our data and those in the literature we found that (1) cerebellar and low-grade astrocytic tumors, including gangliogliomas, are most often karyotypically normal; (2) supratentorial tumors were more frequently high-grade tumors that demonstrated a complex karyotype. Chromosome abnormalities were similar to those described in adult astrocytic tumors, namely, +7, 9p abnormalities, and -10; (3) primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNETs) were virtually always karyotypically abnormal with a high frequency of +7,

An underestimation of pathologic diagnosis could be expected if disseminated choroid plexus tumors (CPTs) are diagnosed as lower grade tumors. Thus, molecular diagnosis using genome-wide DNA methylation profiling may be useful for clarifying the malignant potential of the tumor entity. Herein, we report a 2.7-year-old girl of pathologically atypical choroid plexus papilloma with intracranial dissemination. She was treated without radiotherapy and has been well, without recurrence for 32 months following the diagnosis. Subsequently, after a year from the diagnosis, T-stochastic neighbor embeddi

In this study, atypical choroid plexus papilloma was treated with high-dose rapamycin for 17 days preoperatively in an infant. Rapamycin significantly reduced the blood supply to the tumor while reducing the tumor volume, and most of the tumor was resected successfully. However, the infant developed hyperglycemia related to the rapamycin dose, which was effectively controlled by adjusting the dose and applying insulin.

PURPOSE: Choroid plexus tumors (CPT) are rare neoplasms that pose considerable treatment challenges. This study reviews a single institute's experience with 25 patients of CPT and attempts to contribute to the general body of knowledge on CPT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of the case records of 25 patients operated for CPT since January 1998 and having a minimum of 1 year follow-up.
RESULTS: The study group included 12 (48%) cases of choroid plexus papilloma (CPP), 09 (36%) cases of choroid plexus carcinoma (CPC) and 4 cases of atypical CPP. The mean age at presentation wa

BACKGROUND: Choroid plexus carcinomas (CPC) are rare malignant brain tumours arising from the choroid plexus epithelium. CPC are most common in the paediatric population, particularly those under 2 years of age. Common presentations include headache, diplopia and signs of increased intracranial pressure such as nausea and vomiting. Infants may present with increased head circumference, bulging fontanelles, splayed cranial sutures and/or neurological delay. Diagnosis is made via radiological and histological analysis.
MANAGEMENT AND PROGNOSIS: Gross total resection (GTR) is the preferred treat

AIM: To report the first case of an isolated lumbar grade II atypical choroid plexus papilloma (CPP).
CASE REPORT: A 42-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of back and leg pain. No urinary or rectal dysfunction was detected. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well-circumscribed, contrast-enhancing, intradural extramedullary mass at L2-3. He underwent L2 and L3 partial laminectomies for tumor resection and complete resection was achieved without causing neurological deficit. Histopathologic examination of the tumor resulted in a diagnosis of grade II atypical CPP. T

Infantile choroid plexus papilloma (CPP) associated with multiple peritumoral cysts is a rare variant of CPP, and clinical course and optimal management are largely unknown. A 9-month-old boy presented with a large solid tumor in the left lateral ventricle associated with multiple peritumoral cysts, arachnoid cysts, and hydrocephalus containing xanthochromic fluid with high protein content. Shrinkage of these cysts and resolution of hydrocephalus were achieved after total resection of the hypervascular solid part of the tumor. Histological examination confirmed the solid part of the tumor as C

Primary intraventricular neoplasms are rare tumors that originate from the ependymal or subependymal, septum pellucidum, choroid plexus and the supporting arachnoid tissue. Knowledge of the common locations of these tumors within the ventricular system, together with key imaging characteristics and presentation age, can significantly narrow the differential diagnosis. In 2016, the WHO reorganized the classification of several primary CNS tumors by combining histopathological and molecular data. This study highlights the imaging characteristics, histopathological and molecular data, treatment s
