The management of local wounds is one of the key steps in the treatment of trauma and burns. Based on the advance in wound management in recent years, we emphasize the importance of paying much attention to study on mechanisms, prevention and treatment in local chronic wounds and hypertrophic scar. Also, the application of some high-technique methods may help enhancing the wound healing velocity and quality after injury.

AIM: The treatment of keloid and hypertrophic scars remains a challenging clinical problem despite numerous proposed therapies reported in the literature. This is due to the fact that the mechanisms that bring about keloid/hypertrophic scars are not completely understood. This article reviews the pertinent literature regarding the pathophysiology and management of keloid and hypertrophic scars.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A computerized literature search using MEDLINE was conducted for published articles on keloid and hypertrophic scars. The medical subject headings "keloid" or "hypertrophic scar"

Pressure garments have been the mainstay of hypertrophic scar treatment since the 1970s. However, there are many problems associated with their use. This is the first in a series of papers on pressure garments that will review the literature published to date on the origins of pressure garments for hypertrophic scar treatment and the problems associated with current pressure garment use.

BACKGROUND: There is no evidence-based guidance on the use of fractional CO2 laser in the excision of scars.
AIM: To explore the effectiveness and safety of fractional CO2 laser in the treatment of keloids.
METHODS: In this meta-analysis, we searched the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from inception to April 2023. We only included studies reporting fractional CO2 laser treatment of keloids. We excluded duplicate published studies, incomplete studies, those with incomplete data, animal experiments, literature reviews, and systematic studies.
RESULTS: The pooled results showed that th

BACKGROUND: Unlike various topical treatment options for acne vulgaris, options for acne scars mostly involve invasive interventions. So far, only a few clinical trials have investigated the effects of topical treatment for acne scars.
OBJECTIVES: We evaluated the safety and efficacy of DA-5520, a recently developed topical gel for the treatment of different types of acne scars.
METHODS: A 12-week prospective, randomized, active-controlled, evaluator-blind, single-center study involving 36 participants with acne scars was performed. Participants were randomized into four different groups at

BACKGROUND Hypertrophic scars occur when there is an excessive wound-healing response in the skin. Fractional, or fractionated, carbon dioxide (CO₂) laser therapy uses narrow shafts of light to smooth the skin surface and stimulate dermal collagen, which tightens the skin. This case report describes a 57-year-old woman with a traumatic hypertrophic scar of the face treated with fractional carbon dioxide laser therapy. The purpose of this case report was to highlight the role of fractional CO₂ laser therapy in treatment of a facial traumatic hypertrophic scar in a patient after a motor vehicle

BACKGROUND: Laser treatments have been used to treat a variety of scar symptoms, including the appearance of scars following burn injury. One such symptom is hyperpigmentation. There are several qualitative and quantitative measures of assessing improvement in hyperpigmentation over time. The Patient and Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) and Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) are two scales that describe characteristics of scar such as pigmentation level. These scales are limited by their qualitative nature. On the other hand, spectrophotometers provide quantitative measures of pigmentation. Prio

Burn scars cause high morbidity in the form of contractures, body disfigurement, and itching, and they also have a high emotional impact that adversely affects patient quality of life. Laser therapy has proven effective in this setting. It is superior to topical treatments and can be used in conjunction with surgery, helping to reduce morbidity. The use of lasers in hospital dermatology departments, however, is still limited. Carbon dioxide laser resurfacing is the most widely used modality for reducing scar thickness, improving textural abnormalities, and treating contractures. Treatments imp

Pathological scarring, manifested in the form of hypertrophic scars (HTS) and keloid scars (KS), represents a major clinical challenge due to its aesthetic and functional implications for patients. Understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in these types of scars and developing effective treatments requires the use of controlled experimental models, especially animals, to overcome the limitations of clinical studies. The aim of this sistematic review is to critically analyze the animal models used in the last five years (2020-2025) for the study of pathological scars, highlighting their

OBJECTIVE: Cleft lip repair (CLR) can be complicated by hypertrophic scar or keloid. Botulinum toxin type A (BTA) may improve postoperative scarring by reducing muscle tension and cytokine activity at the scar site. This systematic review analyzes the available evidence regarding the effect of BTA on scar quality after CLR.
DESIGN: The search was conducted in 6 different databases in accordance with PRISMA guidelines (PubMed, Scielo, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane) using "botulinum toxin" and "cleft lip" as keywords.
SETTING: Academic hospital.
PATIENTS: Exclusive to patients

BACKGROUND: In this study, we investigated the effect of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) on wound healing on skin in a model produced in rats.
METHODS: Sixteen Sprague-Dawley male rats were included in the study. The four full-thickness skin wound was created on the dorsal area of each rat with 4.4 mm punch. The rats were randomly divided into two groups. MMP-1 and saline were administered intraperitoneally once daily for 7 days. The biopsies were taken from the separate wounds on the 4th, 7th, 14th and 21st days of the experiment. The lymphocytic response, vascular proliferation, fibrobla

Scar formation is a consequence of wound healing that developed from damaged tissue either from physical injury or surgical incision. A hypertrophic scar develops due to an abnormal healing response to trauma. It might lead to serious functional and cosmetic disability. There are numerous methods mentioned in the literature to treat such scars but to date, no single method has been known to cure them. In this review, we focused on differences between various types of nonsurgical management of hypertrophic scar focusing on the indication, mechanism of action, and efficacy of the pulsed dye lase

Acne scarring is the result of a deviation in the orderly pattern of healing and can have profound psychosocial implications for patients. While the most effective means of addressing acne scarring is to prevent its formation through good acne control, there are a number of therapeutic interventions that improve the appearance of acne scars. Many of these procedural modalities have flaws and are limited by operator skill and experience. Laser scar revision, on the other hand, is a precise, well tolerated procedure with clinically demonstrable efficacy and minimal adverse effects that may be us

The inflammatory process has direct effects on normal and abnormal wound healing. Hypertrophic scar formation is an aberrant form of wound healing and is an indication of an exaggerated function of fibroblasts and excess accumulation of extracellular matrix during wound healing. Two cytokines--transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)--are lipid mediators of inflammation involving wound healing. Overproduction of TGF-beta and suppression of PGE2 are found in excessive wound scarring compared with normal wound healing. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) o

BACKGROUND: At the beginning of the twentieth century, smallpox affected every continent and country in the world, but over the first half of the twentieth century this disease was eliminated in most countries, including Korea, thanks to the World Health Organization's eradication program. Most survivors of smallpox have facial scars with a distinct cobblestone appearance. Though most smallpox scar patients want smooth skin, it is difficult to achieve good results with dermabrasion or chemical peeling. Recently, with advances in laser technology, laser resurfacing has become more effective and

An open thyroidectomy typically results in a "suicide" wound in the neck measuring approximately 4 to 6 cm in length. In the event that this wound develops into a hypertrophic scar, it can lead to significant psychological and quality-of-life challenges for the patient. The formation of proliferative scarring in surgical incisions is influenced by a multitude of risk factors, which can be broadly classified into intrinsic and extrinsic categories. Contemporary scar prevention and control strategies encompass a range of modalities, including postoperative rehabilitation physiotherapy, topical d
