Multiscale elucidation of reactive black 5 biodegradation by a synergistic bacterial consortium biofilm: experimental validation and molecular dynamics insights.

Reactive Black 5 (RB5) is a widely used azo dye in the textile industry that is highly toxic and harms both human health and the environment. The biofilm is a complex matrix comprising microorganisms and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Biofilm-based bioremediation is one of the most effective approaches for removing toxic RB5 from water. In this study, a biofilm-forming bacterial consortium comprising Bacillus tequilensis BS007 and Enterobacter mori BS008 was evaluated for treated RB5 dye. The consortium exhibited a specific growth rate (μmax) of 0.265 h⁻1 and efficient biofilm forma

Biological functions of peptides from legumes in gastrointestinal health. A review legume peptides with gastrointestinal protection.

Extensively consumed worldwide, legumes such as beans, soybeans, chickpeas, and peas represent a great source of protein. Legume-derived proteins provide bioactive peptides, small sequences of amino acids produced by enzymatic hydrolysis, gastrointestinal digestion, fermentation, or germination. Recent studies showed diverse biological effects of these peptides as antioxidants, antihypertensives, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antithrombotic, antidiabetic, hypocholesterolemic, and even immunomodulators. These beneficial effects aid in preventing and treating chronic illnesses, particularly

The Effect of Chickpea Dietary Fiber on Lipid Metabolism and Gut Microbiota in High-Fat Diet-Induced Hyperlipidemia in Rats.

Hyperlipidemia is a metabolic disorder characterized by high lipid levels, which may lead to cardiovascular diseases. Evidence suggests that improving the gut microbiota homeostasis is of great importance in lipid metabolism. Dietary fiber may positively regulate blood lipid and intestinal microbiota, therefore, we have investigated the effect of chickpea dietary fiber (CDF) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemia and gut bacterial dysbiosis. Fifty male Sprague Dawley rats purchased for this study were randomly divided into 5 groups of 10 rats each. The control group was fed with normal

pH Cycling-Induced Formation of Chickpea Protein-Casein Dual-Protein Complexes: Interaction Mechanisms, Structure, Function, and Bioactive Molecule Protection.

Single proteins have certain limitations in terms of functional properties, while composite products combining plant and animal proteins offer a practical and sustainable strategy to address this issue. This study aims to establish a dual-protein complex, the pH cycling-induced chickpea protein (CP)-casein (CA) complex (pH-CP/CA), to load curcumin and enhance its functionality. Results showed that pH-CP/CA (CP/CA = 2:1, mass ratio) exhibited a smaller particle size and a higher absolute value of zeta potential. Hydrogen-bonding, electrostatic, and hydrophobic interactions drove the pH-CP/CA fo

Functional Genomics: From Soybean to Legume.

The Fabaceae family, the third-largest among flowering plants, is nutritionally vital, providing rich sources of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Leguminous plants, such as soybeans, peas, and chickpeas, typically contain two to three times more protein than cereals like wheat and rice, with low fat content (primarily unsaturated fats) and no cholesterol, making them essential for cardiovascular health and blood sugar management. Since the release of the soybean genome in 2010, genomic research in Fabaceae has advanced dramatically. High-quality reference genomes have been assem

Protective Effect of Chickpea Protein Hydrolysates on Colon Carcinogenesis Associated With a Hypercaloric Diet.

OBJECTIVE: Colon cancer occupies the third place in incidence worldwide; eating habits, in particular, consumption of hypercaloric diets, are relevant in its etiopathogenesis. On the other hand, foods can also modulate carcinogenesis: for example, proteins, which when hydrolyzed release peptides with biological activities, and legumes, especially, chickpea, represent a good source of hydrolysates. The objective of this work was to verify the inhibitory effect of chickpea hydrolyzed protein on azoxymethane (AOM)-induced carcinogenesis in mice fed a hypercaloric diet. METHODS: We hydrolyzed chi

Dry Root Rot Disease Assays in Chickpea: a Detailed Methodology.

Dry root rot (DRR) disease is an emerging biotic stress threat to chickpea cultivation around the world. It is caused by a soil-borne fungal pathogen, Rhizoctonia bataticola. In the literature, comprehensive and detailed step-by-step protocols on disease assays are sparse. This article provides complete details on the steps involved in setting up a blotting paper technique for quickly screening genotypes for resistance to DRR. The blotting paper technique is easy and less expensive. Another method, based on the sick pot approach, is a mimic of natural infection and can be applied to study the
