[Relationship between cigarette smoking and physical complaints].

In order to evaluate the influence of cigarette smoking on health conditions, the authors analyzed results of the THI (Todai Health Index) questionnaire, which was administered to male employees of a large-sized enterprise in Osaka between 1984 and 1990. The smoking rate of male employees decreased over this period of time from 62.4% (1984) to 58.3% (1990) in this enterprise. Complaints regarding "respiratory organ", "digestive organ", "circulatory organ", "irregularity of daily life", "impulsiveness", and "many subjective symptoms" significantly increased with the amount of smoking. Breast cancer and cigarette smoking: a hypothesis.

In many studies, cigarette smoking has been associated with a small increase in breast cancer risk. The authors evaluated the relation of smoking to breast cancer risk in two case-control studies carried out from 1982 through 1986. In Canada, 607 women with breast cancer and 1,214 controls matched on decade of age and neighborhood were interviewed at home. In the United States, 1,955 cases of breast cancer and 805 controls with other cancers were interviewed in the hospital. In both studies, breast cancer risk was associated weakly with cigarette smoking overall. The odds ratio for women who h

Effects of cigarette smoking on phobic anxiety.

Smokers report that smoking reduces anxiety. However, experimental research on the anxiety-reducing effects of smoking is limited to two self-report studies, both of which have methodological problems. We tested the effects of smoking on self-reported anxiety and avoidance behavior in a behavioral avoidance test (BAT) using a large white rat. In a counterbalanced within subjects design, 20 rat phobic female smokers smoked or were smoking deprived in two separate administrations of the BAT. A second group of 20 rat phobic nonsmokers also received two BATs. Subjects manifested substantial anxiet

Cigarette smoking and atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis.

The charts of all patients over 30 for whom an adequate smoking history was available and an arteriogram or DIVA was done, specifically looking for renal artery stenosis, were reviewed to evaluate the role of cigarette smoking in contributing to the development of atherosclerotic renovascular hypertension. A patient was considered to be a "case" if the angiographic study demonstrated a typical stenotic lesion and a procedure (surgery or angioplasty) cured or definitely improved the patient's hypertension. If the study was negative, the patient was considered to be a "control." Twenty-one cases

Cigarette smoking and chlorpromazine disposition and actions.

Chlorpromazine, 75 mg, was taken by eight cigarette smokers and nine nonsmokers. Mean maximum percent decrease in mean blood pressure with change in position from lying to standing during the first 10 hr after chlorpromazine was 46% greater in nonsmokers than in smokers. Of the eight smokers, six did not become sleepy after chlorpromazine, one became slightly sleepy, and one fell asleep. Of the nine nonsmokers, three became slightly sleepy, one moderately sleepy, and five fell asleep. Mean peak plasma concentration of chlorpromazine was 24% lower and mean area under the plasma concentration-ti

Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms of Vascular Endothelial Injury Induced by Cigarette Smoke and Cigarette Smoke Extract in Atherosclerosis.

Although smoking is a well-recognized independent risk factor for atherosclerosis (AS), its core pathogenic mechanism lies in the induction of vascular endothelial cell (VEC) dysfunction, which represents the initial step of AS development. However, the mechanisms by which cigarette smoke (CS) and cigarette smoke extract (CSE) trigger and promote atherosclerotic progression via VECs remain incompletely understood. CS and CSE damage the vascular endothelial barrier through three key mechanisms: oxidative stress induction, inflammatory response activation, and endothelial cell apoptosis. This na

Smoking dependence across the levels of cigarette smoking in a multiethnic sample.

OBJECTIVES: The Brief Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives (WISDM) is a multi-dimensional smoking dependence measure that assesses primary dependence motives (PDM; e.g., core dependence marked by tolerance, craving) and secondary dependence motives (SDM; e.g., auxiliary dependence motives such as cognitive enhancement, weight control). However, the relationship between PDM, SDM, and smoking level remains unclear. Thus, we examined these scales across smoking levels in a diverse sample of smokers. METHODS: Participants were 2376 African American, Latino, and non-Hispanic White smo

Extracellular vesicle-encapsulated microRNA signatures of cigarette smoking and smoking-related harm.

BACKGROUND: The health effects of smoking vary substantially between individuals. Novel strategies are needed to identify individuals with increased risk of smoking-related morbidity. Extracellular vesicle-encapsulated microRNAs (EV-miRNAs) may be viable biomarkers of smoking-related harm. Here, we measured associations of smoking status with plasma EV-miRNA expression levels. METHODS: Participants who were free of smoking-related diseases were sampled from the prospective Normative Aging Study (NAS). Smoking histories were evaluated using standardized smoking questionnaires. EV-miRNAs were m

[Gender signs on female smoking: a sociological approach to women's cigarette smoking].

Based on an extensive review of specialized literature about woman smoking, this essay aims to promote a better understanding of this issue, proposing the adoption of Social Sciences concepts, particularly at gender category, to support more comprehensive and encompassing approaches towards prevention and health assistance of tobacco smoking women. Analyzing the epidemiologic scenario of woman smoking, three tendencies could be identified--pauperization, feminilization and juvenilization--confirming that many of women disease are related to social and gender inequalities. Gender dimension is a

Tobacco, Cigarettes, and the Liver: The Smoking Gun.

The association between alcohol and liver disease, including alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis, acute-on-chronic liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma, has been well described, but the same cannot be said for the association between smoking, water pipe or tobacco chewing. A review of cumulative evidence suggests that smoking is independently a risk factor for liver fibrosis and contributes to carcinogenesis in HCC. Smoking-related fibrosis has been reported in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, primary biliary cholangitis, alcoholic liver disease and chronic viral hepatitis. He

Cigarette smoking and the incidence of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoke contains carcinogens, which may increase the risk of breast cancer (BC). Conversely, cigarette smoking also has antiestrogenic effects, which may reduce the risk of BC. The association between smoking and BC remains controversial. METHODS: Prospective cohort study of 111 140 participants of the Nurses' Health Study from 1976 to 2006 for active smoking and 36 017 women from 1982 to 2006 for passive smoking. RESULTS: During 3 005 863 person-years of follow-up, 8772 incident cases of invasive BC were reported. After adjustment for potential confounders, the hazard rati

The impact of cigarette smoking on stimulant addiction.

OBJECTIVES: Stimulant users smoke cigarettes at high rates; however, little is known about the relationship between tobacco and stimulants. METHODS: Our goal in this article is to synthesize a growing literature on the role of cigarette smoking in stimulant addiction. RESULTS: Early nicotine exposure may influence the development of stimulant addiction. Preclinical and clinical studies suggest a facilitatory role of nicotinic agonists for stimulant addiction. Smoking appears to be associated with more severe stimulant use and poorer treatment outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: It is important to assess

Cigarette smoking and the development of premenstrual syndrome.

Moderate to severe premenstrual syndrome (PMS) affects as many as 20% of premenopausal women. Although smoking may be more common in women with PMS, it is unknown whether smoking is involved in PMS etiology. In 1991-2001, the authors conducted a case-control study nested within the prospective Nurses' Health Study II. Participants were US women aged 27-44 years and free of PMS at baseline, including 1,057 who developed PMS over 10 years and 1,968 reporting no diagnosis of PMS and only minimal menstrual symptoms during this time. Smoking at various ages was assessed by questionnaires. After adj

[Chemistry and toxicology of cigarette smoke in the lungs].

Cigarettes appearance in the middle of 19th century turns tobacco into a general consumption product with ill-fated consequences. Technological process and the means by which tobacco dependence appears were hidden from medical world for a long time by the tobacco companies. Cigarette smoke represents a mixture of 4000 toxic substances including carcinogens, organic compounds, solvents, gas substances (CO). We can add another 600 additives which are used in the technological process. Tobacco dependence is defined by the daily cigarette consumption, difficult quitting and probability for withdra

Hypospadias and maternal exposures to cigarette smoke.

The few previous studies of hypospadias and smoking have suggested either no association or a reduced risk. This study, which uses data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a multi-state, population-based case-control study, includes data on males born with severe hypospadias (i.e. the urethra opens at the penile shaft, scrotum or perineum) from 1997 to 2000. Non-malformed, liveborn male controls were selected randomly from birth certificates or from birth hospitals. Maternal interviews were completed by telephone with 453 case mothers and 1267 control mothers. Maternal smoking wa

Identification of glutathione modifications by cigarette smoke.

Although it has been recognized for decades that cigarette smoke (CS) is toxic to respiratory tract tissues, and that glutathione (GSH) and other thiols are able to ameliorate some of the adverse effects of CS, the precise interactions between thiols and critical CS components are only partially characterized. In the present study, we used HPLC and MALDI-MS approaches to more rigorously characterize the products of CS reactions with GSH, the major cellular thiol and an important antioxidant constituent in respiratory tract lining fluids, in an attempt to increase our understanding of mechanism

The Effectiveness of E-Cigarettes for Smoking Cessation.

BACKGROUND: Our primary aim was to assess-in the German population-the effectiveness of e-cigarettes (ECs; with or without nicotine), nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), and no use of evidence-based aids in smoking cessation. METHODS: Analysis of cross-sectional data from a representative survey of the population (age 14-96 years) conducted in 2016-2021. All current smokers and recent ex-smokers (< 12 months since quitting) who had made ≥ 1 attempt to quit in the past 12 months (n = 2740) were included. They were asked about use of cessation aids in their most recent quit attempt and their cu
