[New digital carotid compressor].

Since 1979, many cases of paraganliomas in the neck have been successfully treated in Tianjin Cancer Hospital. All patients who would be subjected to this operation should undergo preoperative compressing exercises of the carotid artery to promote better circulation of collateral cerebral crossflow. Therefore, a reliable and compact instrument is necessary for the compressing exercises of the carotid artery and the long-term ambulatory monitoring of the compressing effect. This paper introduces our developed instrument, Adjustable and Digital Carotid compressor, which is based on the principle

Multicomponent Exercise Training Combined with Nutritional Counselling Improves Physical Function, Biochemical and Anthropometric Profiles in Obese Children: A Pilot Study.

Aerobics or strength exercise plus diet interventions have been shown to counteract childhood obesity. However, little is known with regard to periodized multicomponent exercise interventions combined with nutritional counselling, which might be less demanding but more enjoyable and respectful of children and adolescents' nature. In order to analyze the impact of such a multimodal approach, 18 obese children (10.8 ± 1.6 years; 63% females; z Body Mass Index 3 ± 0.4) trained for 60 min, twice weekly and were measured for body composition, biochemical parameters and physical function. We found t

Heat acclimation defense against exertional heat stroke by improving the function of preoptic TRPV1 neurons.

Rationale: Record-breaking heatwaves caused by greenhouse effects lead to multiple hyperthermia disorders, the most serious of which is exertional heat stroke (EHS) with the mortality reaching 60 %. Repeat exercise with heat exposure, termed heat acclimation (HA), protects against EHS by fine-tuning feedback control of body temperature (Tb), the mechanism of which is opaque. This study aimed to explore the molecular and neural circuit mechanisms of the HA training against EHS. Methods: Male C57BL/6 mice (6-8 weeks) and male TRPV1-Cre mice (6-8 weeks) were used in our experiments. The EHS model

Autonomic modulation of neuroplasticity in spinal cord injury rehabilitation: insights from a narrative review.

Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) causes persistent autonomic dysregulation, which is not merely a clinical epiphenomenon, but a mechanistic condition shaping the neurochemical, neurovascular, and immuno-endocrine milieu in which plasticity unfolds. Yet, the modulatory role of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) in post-injury circuit reorganization remains insufficiently integrated in rehabilitation paradigms. This narrative review synthesizes emerging evidence (2020-2025) describing how sympatho-vagal dynamics constrain or enable adaptive plasticity following SCI, and surveys therapeutic strategies th

Cortical reorganization of the glutamate synapse in the activity-based anorexia rat model: Impact on cognition.

Patients suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN) display altered neural activity, morphological, and functional connectivity in the fronto-striatal circuit. In addition, hypoglutamatergic transmission and aberrant excitability of the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) observed in AN patients might underpin cognitive deficits that fuel the vicious cycle of dieting behavior. To provide a molecular mechanism, we employed the activity-based anorexia (ABA) rat model, which combines the two hallmarks of AN (i.e., caloric restriction and intense physical exercise), to evaluate structural remodeling togethe

Standardized vs. Relative Intensity in CrossFit.

CrossFit is characterized by being a standardized training program that improves physical performance through the provision of several stimuli regardless of the participant's strength level. This study aimed to compare the acute response in total repetitions as a measurement of performance, jump ability, physiological demand (heart rate and blood lactate), and perceived effort considering the participants' strength level with individualized intensity in CrossFit. Thirty-five participants were assessed and asked to participate on two separate days in a standardized and relative 'As Many Repetit

Cerebellar Intermittent Theta-Burst Stimulation Combined with Vestibular Rehabilitation Improves Gait and Balance in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis: a Preliminary Double-Blind Randomized Controlled Trial.

Difficulties in gait and balance disorders are among the most common mobility limitations in multiple sclerosis (MS), mainly due to a damage of cerebellar circuits. Moreover, the cerebellum plays a critical role in promoting new motor tasks, which is an essential function for neurorehabilitation. In this study, we investigated the effects of cerebellar intermittent theta burst stimulation (c-iTBS), a high-frequency rTMS protocol able to increase cerebellar activity, on gait and balance in a sample of 20 hospitalized participants with MS, undergoing vestibular rehabilitation (VR), an exercise-b

A skin-mountable flexible biosensor based on Cu-MOF/PEDOT composites for sweat ascorbic acid monitoring.

Continuous monitoring of sweat nutrients offers valuable insights into metabolic cycling and health levels. However, existing methods often lack adaptability and real-time capabilities. Here, we propose a skin-mountable flexible biosensor integrated with metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived composites for real-time monitoring of sweat ascorbic acid (AA) levels. The biosensor features a miniaturized, highly integrated system capable of an imperceptible, stretchable skin patch with dimensions of 16.9 × 9.9 × 0.1 mm3, ensuring conformal integration with curvilinear skin contours. The introductio

Neurosteroids: a lifelong impact on brain health.

Neurosteroids are critical regulators of brain function, exerting profound effects on neurodevelopment, emotional regulation, cognition, and resilience to stress across the lifespan. Synthesized endogenously in the brain and peripheral tissues, neurosteroids modulate neural circuits through both genomic and non-genomic mechanisms. This review synthesizes current evidence on the roles of neurosteroids from fetal development through advanced biological aging, emphasizing their involvement in neuronal plasticity, synaptic modulation, myelination, and neurogenesis. We explore how neurosteroid dysr

Concurrent training in cardiac rehabilitation: A scoping review of aerobic-strength combinations in patients with coronary artery disease.

Concurrent training (CT), defined as the integration of aerobic and strength exercise modalities, is increasingly implemented within cardiac rehabilitation (CR) to improve cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health. However, CT prescriptions vary markedly, and the characteristics and application of CT within CR have not been comprehensively mapped. This scoping review examined how CT has been designed and delivered in CR and summarised reported outcomes across International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) domains. A systematic search of databases and supplementary sou

Circadian Genes as Exploratory Biomarkers in DMD: Results From Both the mdx Mouse Model and Patients.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a rare genetic disease due to dystrophin gene mutations which cause progressive weakness and muscle wasting. Circadian rhythm coordinates biological processes with the 24-h cycle and it plays a key role in maintaining muscle functions, both in animal models and in humans. We explored expression profiles of circadian circuit master genes both in Duchenne muscular dystrophy skeletal muscle and in its animal model, the mdx mouse. We designed a customized, mouse-specific Fluidic-Card-TaqMan-based assay (Fluid-CIRC) containing thirty-two genes related to circadi

New Equations for Predicting Maximum Oxygen Uptake in Patients With Heart Failure.

We obtained directly measured maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) by open-circuit spirometry in 1,453 patients with chronic heart failure (HF) who completed a treadmill test (n = 1,453) or cycle ergometry (n = 1,838), as participants in The Fitness Registry and the Importance of Exercise National Data Base (FRIEND) dataset. We developed a new equation to predict measured VO2 max in those using a treadmill by randomly sampling 70% of the participants from each of the following age categories: <40, 40 to 50, 50 to 70, and >70 and used the remaining 30% for validation. Multivariable linear regression

Music and Dyslexia: A New Musical Training Method to Improve Reading and Related Disorders.

Numerous arguments in the recent neuroscientific literature support the use of musical training as a therapeutic tool among the arsenal already available to therapists and educators for treating children with dyslexia. In the present study, we tested the efficacy of a specially-designed Cognitivo-Musical Training (CMT) method based upon three principles: (1) music-language analogies: training dyslexics with music could contribute to improve brain circuits which are common to music and language processes; (2) the temporal and rhythmic features of music, which could exert a positive effect on th

Dysregulation of dopamine neurotransmission in drug addicts: implications for criminal behavior and corrective interventions.

Drug addiction often correlates with criminal behavior. When investigating criminal behavior among individuals grappling with drug addiction, it becomes crucial to scrutinize the influence of dopamine. Substances such as heroin, morphine, methamphetamine and other drugs can cause abnormal dopamine secretion when people are addicted to them, which promotes changes in the brain's reward circuit and emotional balance, thereby increasing susceptibility to criminal behavior. The pivotal role of dopamine within the reward pathway and its regulatory function in emotional processes exert profound infl

Nutritional Interventions and Acupuncture-Based Strategies for Exercise-Induced Fatigue and Recovery: Mechanisms and Integrative Perspectives.

Exercise-induced fatigue (EIF) refers to a reduced capacity to sustain a specified level or intensity of physical activity and is generally regarded as a physiological warning signal following excessive exercise rather than a pathological state. It involves peripheral disturbances related to energy depletion, metabolite accumulation, oxidative stress, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction, together with central changes involving neuroendocrine networks and the gut-brain axis. In this review, we synthesize evidence from nutritional interventions and acupuncture-based strategies and outlin

Combined resistance exercise and essential amino acid intake enhance follistatin/myostatin ratio and muscle fitness in older women: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Age-associated sarcopenia and declining physical function in older women are connected to changes in hormones, inflammation, and disrupted protein metabolism. Myokines and cytokines play central roles in muscle atrophy. While both resistance exercise (RE) and essential amino acid (EAA) supplementation are promising interventions, limited randomized trials have assessed their combined effect in healthy elderly populations. Early targeted strategies may help delay sarcopenia and promote healthier aging. METHODS: A 12-week randomized controlled trial was performed involving 96 health

Lung-Brain Axis Mechanisms of Cognitive Dysfunction in Long COVID.

Cognitive dysfunction, characterized by memory impairment, attentional deficits, and executive dysfunction, represents a critical clinical manifestation in post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 that significantly compromises patients' quality of life. The lung-brain axis, as a bidirectional regulatory network connecting the respiratory system to the central nervous system, interacts through neural circuits, humoral pathways, and microbial pathways, and may play a central role in the cognitive impairments occurring in long COVID (LC). This paper systematically reviews the multidimensional pathways of
