Exploring Diet-Based Treatments for Atrial Fibrillation: Patient Empowerment and Citizen Science as a Model for Quality-of-Life-Centered Solutions.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common heart rhythm disorder in the Western world. Between the years 2010 and 2019, the global prevalence of AF rose from 33.5 million to 59 million, highlighting the importance of developing equitable treatments for patients. The disease is associated with symptoms such as palpitations, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, and cognitive dysfunction. In addition, AF increases the risk of developing a stroke and heart failure. Despite new insights into risk factors that can lead to the development of AF, the success of current treatments is suboptimal. N

Discovery of the potentially invasive Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann (Acari: Ixodidae) in Türkiye: an unexpected finding through citizen science.

The Asian longhorned tick, Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann, is a species commonly found in Central Asia, East Asia, and Australia, but it has recently emerged in the USA as a significant disease threat. The tick exhibits a fascinating biological trait, as certain populations are capable of reproducing both sexually and asexually via parthenogenesis. As a result, a single asexual female has the potential to initiate the establishment of a new population when introduced into a novel geographical region. Haemaphysalis longicornis is of considerable medical and veterinary importance, being assoc

Analysis of more than 20,000 injuries in European professional football by using a citizen science-based approach: An opportunity for epidemiological research?

OBJECTIVES: It has been claimed that analyses of large datasets from publicly accessible, open-collaborated ("citizen science-based") online databases may provide additional insight into the epidemiology of injuries in professional football. However, this approach comes with major limitations, raising critical questions about the current trend of utilizing citizen science-based data. Therefore, we aimed to determine if citizen science-based health data from a popular online database on professional football players can be used for epidemiological research, i.e. in providing results comparable

Building citizen science intelligence for outbreak preparedness and response: a mixed-method study in nine countries to assess knowledge, readiness and feasibility.

INTRODUCTION: Citizen science (CS) is an emerging approach in public health to harness the collective intelligence of individuals to augment traditional scientific efforts. However, citizens' viewpoint, especially the hard-to-reach population, is lacking in current outbreak-related literature. We aim to understand the awareness, readiness and feasibility of outbreak-related CS, including digitally enabled CS, in low-income and middle-income countries. METHODS: This mixed-method study was conducted in nine countries between October 2022 and June 2023. Recruitment through civil society targeted

How citizen science helps to expand the distribution and describe predictors related to a native land snail, while also introducing spatial biases.

Although mollusks represent Earth's second most diverse invertebrate group, their natural history and ecology are still scarcely known. The compilation of non-traditional data, such as those from citizen science, represents an alternative to fill these gaps, particularly on striking land snail species such as Macrocyclis peruvianus. Based on long-term citizen science, we aimed to update and describe some basic ecological aspects, such as the distribution and protected area types used by M. peruvianus. We performed pairwise comparisons to test potential changes in occurrence and occupancy among

Predicting the current and future distribution of the western black-legged tick, Ixodes pacificus, across the Western US using citizen science collections.

In the twenty-first century, ticks and tick-borne diseases have expanded their ranges and impact across the US. With this spread, it has become vital to monitor vector and disease distributions, as these shifts have public health implications. Typically, tick-borne disease surveillance (e.g., Lyme disease) is passive and relies on case reports, while disease risk is calculated using active surveillance, where researchers collect ticks from the environment. Case reports provide the basis for estimating the number of cases; however, they provide minimal information on vector population or pathog

Multi-country collaborative citizen science projects to co-design cardiovascular disease prevention strategies and advocacy: findings from Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, and South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) were responsible for 20.5 million annual deaths globally in 2021, with a disproportionally high burden in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). There is growing evidence of the use of citizen science and co-design approaches in developing interventions in different fields, but less so in the context of CVD prevention interventions in SSA. This paper reports on the collaborative multi-country project that employed citizen science and a co-design approach to (i) explore CVD risk perceptions, (ii) develop tailored prevention strategies, and (iii) support advocacy in

Citizen Science Provides an Efficient Method for Broad-Scale Tick-Borne Pathogen Surveillance of Ixodes pacificus and Ixodes scapularis across the United States.

Tick-borne diseases have expanded over the last 2 decades as a result of shifts in tick and pathogen distributions. These shifts have significantly increased the need for accurate portrayal of real-time pathogen distributions and prevalence in hopes of stemming increases in human morbidity. Traditionally, pathogen distribution and prevalence have been monitored through case reports or scientific collections of ticks or reservoir hosts, both of which have challenges that impact the extent, availability, and accuracy of these data. Citizen science tick collections and testing campaigns supplemen

"The more you learn, the more you can influence"-learning circles to support citizen science in Parkinson's disease: a pilot study in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the fastest growing neurological condition, making it a public health concern. There is still much to be learned about this complex disease, and citizen science-the involvement of the public in scientific research-has been used for public health initiatives in other conditions. Meaningful engagement in science requires knowledge and skillset to do so, including a foundational understanding of one's condition. Learning circles are a well-established peer-learning format which have been used for patient education in other conditions. AIM: To explore the

'From women for women': A citizen science approach engaging women in the isolation and application of the vaginal health-associated bacterium Lactobacillus crispatus.

A vaginal microbiome rich in Lactobacillus crispatus is associated with good reproductive and sexual health outcomes. Dysbiosis, indicated by the loss of Lactobacillus crispatus, is a risk factor for urogenital infections, such as the clinical diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis (BV) or urinary tract infections. While many scientists have explored probiotics using a conventional pharmaceutical approach, concerns about accessibility and affordability prompt an investigation into a preventive approach using this naturally occurring bacterium. Our study aimed to explore a potential woman-friendly va

Indigenous people doing citizen science to assess water quality using the BMWP in rivers of an arid semi-arid biosphere reserve in Mexico.

Arid and semi-arid areas are among the most threatened ecosystems on the planet. The Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve (TCBR), in southeastern Mexico, is an arid and semi-arid area with high biological diversity and human settlements of eight ethnic groups. Two rivers drain the reserve, Río Grande (RG) and Río Salado (RS), which are not subject to water quality monitoring by government agencies; however, measures of water quality of these rivers are needed to focus conservation actions on this resource. This work aimed to test the effectiveness of participatory water quality monitoring with

"A sense of joy and responsibility": an assessment of adolescent and young adult research partners' engagement on a digital citizen science HIV intervention in Kazakhstan.

Citizen science approaches, which engage the public in scientific research tasks, can empower adolescents and young adults (AYA) to generate ideas that solve problems in their communities. However, little is known about why AYA choose to partner on HIV citizen science studies, their experiences, or the impact of engagement. This study assessed AYA partners' engagement as Youth Research Collaborators (YRC) on a citizen science HIV stigma reduction intervention in Kazakhstan. Nineteen YRC (ages 15-29) completed reflective interviews focused on the relevance of the research, perceptions of their

A Mixed Methods Approach to Understanding the Public Health Impact of a School-Based Citizen Science Program to Reduce Arsenic in Private Well Water.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to arsenic (As) in well water is a well-documented public health issue for Maine and New Hampshire, as well as for other states in the United States and abroad. Arsenic contamination of well water in these locations is primarily attributed to metasedimentary bedrock that leaches As into groundwater. However, As can also enter groundwater reserves from soils contaminated by the historical use of arsenical pesticides. Approximately half of the households in Maine and New Hampshire rely on private wells, many of which have elevated As. Arsenic exposure has been associated wit

Combining citizen science and molecular diagnostic methods to investigate the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. and Borrelia miyamotoi in tick pools across Great Britain.

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease and is caused by a group of bacteria known as Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) complex. Sharing the same genus as B. burgdorferi, Borrelia miyamotoi is a distinct genotype that causes relapsing fever disease. This emerging tick-borne disease is increasingly becoming a concern in public health. To investigate the prevalence of B. burgdorferi s.l. and B. miyamotoi in ticks first, we developed a PCR (Bmer-qPCR) that targets the phage terminase large subunit (terL) gene carried by B. miyamotoi. A similar approach had been used successfully i

Potential for integrated monitoring of tick-borne diseases: Indices of tick activity, citizen science, and tick-borne Lyme neuroborreliosis in Denmark from 2017 to 2024.

Monitoring programs that track natural fluctuations in tick activity, human exposure, and disease incidence are limited in their ability to detect shifts in tick-borne disease (TBD) risk. We evaluated an integrated approach combining field-based tick surveillance, Google search trends, and national Lyme neuroborreliosis (LNB) records in Denmark from 2017-2024. Tick nymph activity was modelled using meteorological data from six forest sites and validated against independent 2024-2025 data. The model showed strong predictive performance (Pearson's r = 0.76, normalised root-mean-square error = 0.
