Bioengineering of chitosan/citric acid/curcumin nanofiber scaffolds for treatment of spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injuries (SCI) often lead to lasting neurological deficits due to axonal regeneration failure. Current treatments, like direct drug administration, are ineffective because of rapid drug clearance. This study developed and optimized chitosan-curcumin-citric acid nanocomposite scaffolds for sustained curcumin release in SCI therapy. Electrospun nanofibers were fabricated, with the best formulation showing a uniform morphology, an average fiber diameter of 105 ± 1.15 nm, and 98.07 ± 1.12 % porosity. FTIR confirmed no structural deviations, while XRD analysis verified the amorphous sta

Citric acid treatment of refractory chronic postmastectomy raw area during chemotherapy: a novel approach.

BACKGROUND: Wounds at sutured sites are a major postoperative complication. Uncontrolled comorbidities and certain drugs (immunosuppressants and antiproliferative chemotherapeutic agents) hamper the process of wound healing. Sutured wounds need prolonged duration of dressings and management as well as repeated hospital visits. In addition, appropriate reconstructive procedures may be needed to cover the wound. All these factors ultimately add to the cost of care. CASE REPORT: A simple, yet effective option for the management of a refractory chronic postoperative raw area in a surgical case of

Citric acid treatment of a diabetic leg ulcer infected with meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.

Diabetic leg ulcers are difficult to manage. Infection by bacterial pathogens, such as meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), is one of the most important reasons for non-healing of ulcers. If not treated in a timely manner, the ulceration may progress to septicaemia, amputation and even death. We report a successful treatment of a diabetic leg ulcer infected with MRSA, which was not responding to conventional antibiotic therapy and local wound care combined, with a local application of 3% citric acid ointment once daily for 30 days. The results indicated that its use may be a pote

Biosolids-based activated carbon for enhanced copper removal from citric-acid-rich aqueous media.

In this study, we employed batch experiments to assess the effects of citric acid on the Cu(II) removal efficiencies of seven biosolids-based adsorbents. The adsorbents used were dried biosolids (BS), biosolids biochar (BSBC), biosolids-based activated carbon (SBAC), nitric-acid-modified BSBC (BSBC-HNO3) and SBAC (SBAC-HNO3), and amine-modified BSBC (BSBC-NH2) and SBAC (SBAC-NH2). However, with 100 mM citric acid in 1 mM Cu(II) solution, only SBAC showed an increase in Cu(II) removal efficiency (64.0-93.5%). Therefore, we used SBAC for further optimisation of the adsorption process. The kineti

Protective Effect of Citric Acid Against Hepatic Ischemia Reperfusion Injury in Sprague-Dawley Rats.

OBJECTIVE: Hepatic ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury is regarded as a serious concern in clinical practice. Citric acid reduces oxidative stress and inflammation during hypoxia and reoxygenation. Our objective was to investigate the protective effect of citric acid against hepatic I/R injury in rats. METHODS: We fed Sprague-Dawley rats either citric acid (100 mg/kg/d) or saline. One week later, ischemia was induced by clamping the rats' common hepatic artery and portal vein for 30 minutes. The rats were randomly divided into 3 major groups that were treated as follows: 1. the sham operated gr

Reduced Diaphragm Excursion During Reflexive Citric Acid Cough Test in Subjects With Subacute Stroke.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragm excursion is limited during respiratory maneuvers after a stroke. How the diaphragm is limited during reflexive coughs and affects the effectiveness of cough in stroke patients is unclear. This study aimed to measure reflexive cough strength by cough peak flow (CPF) induced by citric acid nebulization (2.8 mol/L), record diaphragm excursions during reflexive coughs in stroke subjects at risk of silent aspiration, and compare these values with those of stroke subjects without risk of aspiration or dysphagia. METHODS: Twenty-one subjects with subacute stroke (mean stroke o

Citric Acid Metabolism in Resistant Hypertension: Underlying Mechanisms and Metabolic Prediction of Treatment Response.

Resistant hypertension (RH) affects 9% to 12% of hypertensive adults. Prolonged exposure to suboptimal blood pressure control results in end-organ damage and cardiovascular risk. Spironolactone is the most effective drug for treatment, but not all patients respond and side effects are not negligible. Little is known on the mechanisms responsible for RH. We aimed to identify metabolic alterations in urine. In addition, a potential capacity of metabolites to predict response to spironolactone was investigated. Urine was collected from 29 patients with RH and from a group of 13 subjects with pseu

Heavy metals mobilization from harbour sediments using EDTA and citric acid as chelating agents.

In this paper experimental tests of heavy metals mobilization from sediments collected from an Italian harbour are presented and discussed. Batch tests of washing with an aqueous solution of chelating agent were performed at selected liquid/solid (L/S) ratios and chelant concentration (0.01, 0.05 and 0.1M). Two chelating agents were chosen: EDTA and citric acid. The objective of the tests was to investigate metal mobilization and soil mineral dissolution promoted by the washing treatment. The study was focused on the mobilization of Pb, Zn, and Cu: their concentrations in the contact solution,

Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporters and Cl- channels regulate citric acid cough in guinea pigs.

Loop diuretics have been shown to inhibit cough and other airway defensive reflexes via poorly defined mechanisms. We test the hypothesis that the furosemide-sensitive Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter (NKCC1) is expressed by sensory nerve fibers innervating the airways where it plays an important role in regulating sensory neural activity. NKCC1 immunoreactivity was present on the cell membranes of most nodose and jugular ganglia neurons projecting to the trachea, and it was present on the peripheral terminals of putative mechanosensory nerve fibers in the airways. In urethane-anesthetized, spontaneo

Demineralization of caries-affected transparent dentin by citric acid: an atomic force microscopy study.

OBJECTIVES: This study determined recession rates of peritubular dentin and intertubular dentin in citric acid solution (0.018M, pH=2.5) for caries-affected transparent dentin, one of the major components of dentin substrate as altered by caries, with comparisons made with non-carious dentin. METHODS: Transparent dentin was identified by sagittally sectioning five obviously carious teeth. Sections were then cut through the transparent dentin area perpendicular to the course of the dentinal tubules. Polished dentin samples of the transparent dentin and non-carious dentin were prepared with an

Kinetics and mechanism of ultrasound-enhanced citric acid leaching of chromium from steel slag.

Steel slag is a promising eco-material, yet its utilization remains constrained by chromium (Cr) levels exceeding regulatory limits in many countries. This study investigated the selective leaching of Cr from steel slag using an ultrasound-enhanced organic acid system. Among six carboxylic acids screened, including several bio-based options, citric acid exhibited the highest Cr extraction (63.3%) and Cr/Ca selectivity (2.86), attributed to its multidentate chelation capability. Under optimized ultrasonic conditions (0.8 mol L-1 citric acid, 240 W, 30 °C, 10 min), Cr extraction reached 84.3%, r

Eliminating manganese sensitivity and boosting citric acid production in Aspergillus niger through transporters manipulation.

BACKGROUND: Citric acid, a high-volume bioproduct, is manufactured by submerged fermentation using the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger. Citric acid overflow requires Mn(II) ion concentrations not exceeding 5 µg L- 1. However, manganese easily leaches from media ingredients or stainless-steel bioreactors, necessitating costly, laborious removal. RESULTS: Aspergillus niger citrate fermentations were evaluated across varied manganese profiles, comparing a novel double transporter mutant against parental and single-mutant strains. This strain overexpresses cexA - the primary plasma membrane

Citric acid/chitosan adhesive with viscosity-controlled for wood bonding through supramolecular self-assembly.

Developing bio-based sustainable wood adhesives is significant as a substitute for petroleum-derived adhesives. However, the existing bio-based adhesives have disadvantages of complex fabrication, uncontrollable viscosity, and poor water resistance. Herein, we developed a citric acid/chitosan adhesive with viscosity-controlled and water-resistant features by one-step dissolution at room temperature based on the supramolecular self-assembly strategy. Different wood products (plywood, laminated veneer lumber and particleboard) with superior performance were prepared by applying that adhesive on

In vivo effects of citric acid/zwitterionic surfactant cleansing solution on rabbit sinus mucosa.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis that is refractory to medical or surgical intervention may involve a particularly resistant form of infection known as a bacterial biofilm that is recalcitrant to antibiotics secondary to physical barrier characteristics. Recently, a novel sinus cleansing solution, citric acid/zwitterionic surfactant (CAZS) was shown to be extremely effective in disrupting biofilms in vitro. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of CAZS on sinonasal epithelium In vivo compared with normal saline. METHODS: Indwelling catheters were placed into the right maxil

Preventing blockage of long-term indwelling catheters in adults: are citric acid solutions effective?

Community health practitioners are frequently faced with the problem of indwelling catheters failing to drain. This mini-review examines the evidence regarding the effectiveness of citric acid-based bladder washout solutions (solution G, solution R), compared with saline for preventing blockage of long-term catheters in older adults. Although there is some evidence on the effect of citric acid solutions in laboratory conditions, the search yielded no evidence measuring catheter patency in humans. Only one randomized controlled trial addressing the use of citric acid solutions with human subjec

Anti-bacterial effect of citric acid treatment of periodontally diseased root surfaces in vitro.

This investigation examined whether citric acid may exert an anti-bacterial effect against plaque deposits on root surfaces in vitro. Aerobic and anaerobic blood-agar plate cultures were prepared from plaque samples obtained from the proximal root surfaces of 20 periodontally diseased human teeth following extraction. Ten teeth were exposed to saturated citric acid (pH 1) for 3 min, followed by rinsing in sterile 0.85% saline and plaque samples were then obtained immediately adjacent to those sites sampled initially. Controls consisted of using sterile water instead of citric acid on a further

Blood metabolomics analysis identifies abnormalities in the citric acid cycle, urea cycle, and amino acid metabolism in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a severe and debilitating psychiatric disorder. However, the precise biological basis remains unknown, hampering the search for novel biomarkers. We performed a metabolomics analysis to discover novel peripheral biomarkers for BD. METHODS: We quantified serum levels of 116 metabolites in mood-stabilized male BD patients (n = 54) and age-matched male healthy controls (n = 39). RESULTS: After multivariate logistic regression, serum levels of pyruvate, N-acetylglutamic acid, α-ketoglutarate, and arginine were significantly higher in BD patients than in healt

Modification of rat detrusor muscle contraction by ascorbic acid and citric acid involving enhanced neurotransmitter release and Ca2+ influx.

AIMS: Consumption of carbonated soft drinks is independently associated with the development of overactive bladder (OR 1.41, 95% Cl 1.02-1.95). We have shown previously that artificial sweeteners, present in carbonated soft drinks, enhanced detrusor muscle contraction. Other constituents of soft drinks are preservatives and antioxidants, we evaluated the effects of two of these, ascorbic acid and citric acid, on the contractile response of isolated rat bladder muscle strips. METHODS: Detrusor muscle strips were suspended in a perfusion organ bath. We determined the effect of ascorbic acid and
