Treatment of antibiotic-resistant bacteria colonizing diabetic foot ulcers by OLED induced antimicrobial photodynamic therapy.

We evaluate the efficacy of antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy (APDT) for inactivating a variety of antibiotic-resistant clinical strains from diabetic foot ulcers. Here we are focused on APDT based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). The wound swabs from ten patients diagnosed with diabetic foot ulcers were collected and 32 clinical strains comprising 22 bacterial species were obtained. The isolated strains were identified with the use of mass spectrometry coupled with a protein profile database and tested for antibiotic susceptibility. 74% of isolated bacterial strains exhibited adaptiv

A review on biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles and their biocidal properties.

Use of silver and silver salts is as old as human civilization but the fabrication of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) has only recently been recognized. They have been specifically used in agriculture and medicine as antibacterial, antifungal and antioxidants. It has been demonstrated that Ag NPs arrest the growth and multiplication of many bacteria such as Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Citrobacter koseri, Salmonella typhii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Vibrio parahaemolyticus and fungus Candida albicans by binding Ag/Ag+ with the biomolecules present

A longitudinal seven-year multicenter study on the molecular epidemiology of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales in Taiwan: The burden of metallo-β-lactamases.

BACKGROUND: With the introduction of novel antimicrobial agents, the threat posed by multidrug-resistant organisms has rapidly emerged. Among these, metallo-β-lactamase-producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (MBL-CRE) represent a significant challenge, severely limiting therapeutic options for clinicians. Our aim is to investigate the current burden and molecular epidemiology of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (CPE) in Taiwan, with a particular focus on MBL producers. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter, seven-year longitudinal study from 2018 to 2024, collecting carbapenem-

The Human Nasal Microbiome: A Perspective Study During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic in Malta.

The human respiratory tract is colonized by a complex microbial community that helps maintain respiratory health and plays a crucial role in defending the host from infections. Respiratory viruses have been demonstrated to alter microbiota composition, resulting in opportunistic species expansion, and increasing the disease severity and host susceptibility to bacterial co-infections. This study aims to examine the compositional differences in the nasal microbiota between SARS-CoV-2-infected and non-infected patients. We conducted Oxford Nanopore full-length 16S rRNA sequencing on nasal swabs f

Changes in antibiotic resistance patterns of Gram-negative bacilli across three different wastewater treatment plants in northwest Algeria; first comparative study.

Changes in antibiotic resistance of bacteria in three different wastewater treatment plants (WTP) were investigated to determine their role they play in the dissemination of multidrug resistant bacteria (MDR). Water samples were collected from downstream of three (WTP) from where pollution parameters were detected and high-performance Liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with an ultraviolet (UV) detector was used to measure antibiotic residues. In addition, 88 bacilli Gram-negative (BGN) were collected; activated sludge, aerated lagoons and natural lagoons, and tested for resistance against 18

[Post-marketing surveillance of antibacterial activities of cefozopran against various clinical isolates--II. Gram-negative bacteria].

As a post-marketing surveillance, the in vitro antibacterial activities of cefozopran (CZOP), an agent of cephems, against various clinical isolates were yearly evaluated and compared with those of other cephems, oxacephems, carbapenems, monobactams, and penicillins. Changes in CZOP susceptibility among bacteria were also evaluated with the bacterial resistance ratio calculated from the breakpoint MIC. Twenty-five species (4,154 strains) of Gram-negative bacteria were isolated from the clinical materials annually collected from 1996 to 2001, and consisted of Moraxella (Branhamella) catarrhalis

Identification of bacteria isolated from nasal polyps and their ability to produce superantigens and biofilms in Lebanese patients.

Staphylococcus aureus superantigens and bacterial biofilms have been implicated in the development of chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps. We conducted a study of 32 Lebanese patients-21 males and 11 females, aged 15 to 71 years (mean: 39)-to identify bacteria isolated from nasal polyps and to determine if these bacteria produced superantigens and biofilms. Polyps were surgically removed, homogenized, and subjected to bacteriologic studies. The presence or absence of S aureus enterotoxin A, B, C, and D (superantigen) genes was determined in all isolates by polymerase chain reaction. Biofil

Low-level antimicrobial resistance of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from the nares of pig-exposed persons.

Extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) have recently emerged in livestock and humans. Therefore, this study assessed the carriage of Enterobacteriaceae in the anterior nares and associated antimicrobial resistance in pig-exposed persons. Nasal swabs were enriched in non-selective broth and then plated on MacConkey and ESBL-selective agars. Species was confirmed by matrix-assisted laser-desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF MS). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed according to European Committee on Antimicrobial Susc

Bacterial vampirism mediated through taxis to serum.

Bacteria of the family Enterobacteriaceae are associated with gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding and bacteremia and are a leading cause of death, from sepsis, for individuals with inflammatory bowel diseases. The bacterial behaviors and mechanisms underlying why these bacteria are prone to bloodstream entry remain poorly understood. Herein, we report that clinical isolates of non-typhoidal Salmonella enterica serovars, Escherichia coli, and Citrobacter koseri are rapidly attracted toward sources of human serum. To simulate GI bleeding, we utilized an injection-based microfluidics device and found

Prevalence, incidence and risk factors for acquisition and colonization of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase- and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae from dogs attended at a veterinary hospital in Spain.

The last 10 years have seen a progressive increase in antibiotic resistance rates in bacteria isolated from companion animals. Exposure of individuals to resistant bacteria from companion animals, such as extended-spectrum beta-lactamase- (ESBL) and carbapenemase- (CPE) producing Enterobacteriaceae, can be propitiated. Few studies evaluate the incidence and risk factors associated with colonization by multidrug-resistant bacteria in dogs. This work aims to estimate the prevalence, incidence and risk factors associated with colonization of ESBL-E and CPE-E in 44 canine patients hospitalized in

Indole can act as an extracellular signal to regulate biofilm formation of Escherichia coli and other indole-producing bacteria.

We demonstrated previously that genetic inactivation of tryptophanase is responsible for a dramatic decrease in biofilm formation in the laboratory strain Escherichia coli S17-1. In the present study, we tested whether the biochemical inhibition of tryptophanase, with the competitive inhibitor oxindolyl-L-alanine, could affect polystyrene colonization by E. coli and other indole-producing bacteria. Oxindolyl-L-alanine inhibits, in a dose-dependent manner, indole production and biofilm formation by strain S17-1 grown in Luria-Bertani (LB) medium. Supplementation with indole at physiologically r

Characterization of a carbapenem-resistant Citrobacter amalonaticus coharbouring bla IMP-4 and qnrs1 genes.

Introduction. Members of the genus Citrobacter are facultative anaerobic Gram-negative bacilli belonging to the Enterobacterales [Janda J Clin Microbiol 1994; 32(8):1850-1854; Arens Clin Microbiol Infect 1997;3(1):53-57]. Formerly, Citrobacter species were occasionally reported as nosocomial pathogens with low virulence [Pepperell Antimicrob Agents Chemother 2002;46(11):3555-60]. Now, they are consistently reported to cause nosocomial infections of the urinary tract, respiratory tract, bone, peritoneum, endocardium, meninges, intestines, bloodstream and central nervous system. Identification of Nasal Gammaproteobacteria with Potent Activity against Staphylococcus aureus: Novel Insights into the "Noncarrier" State.

Staphylococcus aureus nasal carriage provides the bacterial reservoir for opportunistic infection. In comparing the nasal microbiomes of culture-defined persistent S. aureus carriers versus noncarriers, we detected S. aureus DNA in all noses, including those with an established history of S. aureus negativity based on culture. Colonization with Gammaproteobacteria, including Klebsiella aerogenes, Citrobacter koseri, Moraxella lincolnii, and select Acinetobacter spp., was associated with S. aureus noncarriage. We next developed physiological competition assays for testing anti-S. aureus activit
