A loss of speech can be related to disorders of the motor units (paresis), language deficits (aphasia), or speech programming deficits (apraxia of speech). Although apraxia of speech has been reported to be associated with degenerative diseases, we observed a patient with a unique constellation of signs that included apraxia of speech, oculo-orofacial apraxia and a supranuclear ophthalmoplegia in the absence of extrapyramidal (Parkinsonian) signs. Post-mortem examination revealed a loss of neurons in the frontal and temporal regions, but there was also a marked loss of neurons and astrogliosis

A 29-month-old female Alaskan husky was presented recumbent, tetraparetic and in a state of dementia, with blindness and cranial nerve deficits. The dog's progress was followed for over two months, as the signs resolved to an non-progressive mild hypermetria with slight proprioceptive ataxia, a diminished menace response and inability to prehend food. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed bilateral cavitation extending from the thalamus to the medulla, with less pronounced degenerative lesions in the caudate nucleus, putamen and claustrum. Cerebrospinal fluid lactate and pyruvate concentra

The arterial supply of the amygdaloid body was studied on 20 brains of adult individuals of both sexes. The middle cerebral and anterior choroidal artery were selectively injected with a mixture of India ink and 5% gelatin solution. By injecting the middle cerebral artery, we filled the blood vessels of the putamen, the lateral part of globus pallidus, the internal capsule, claustrum, insular cortex and the cortex of the convex side of the hemisphere, whereas the blood vessels of the amygdaloid body remained unfilled by the mixture. By injecting the anterior choroidal artery, the blood vessels

We studied the mRNA expression of cGMP-hydrolysing phosphodiesterases (PDEs) in selected brain areas of normal elderly people and patients with Alzheimer's disease. Using radioactive in-situ hybridization histochemistry we found a widespread distribution of the mRNA for PDE2 and PDE9, whereas no specific hybridization signal was observed for PDE5. We observed PDE2 and PDE9 mRNA in all cortical areas studied (insular cortex, entorhinal cortex and visual cortex), although to a different extent. PDE2 mRNA was high in the claustrum, whereas PDE9 mRNA was moderate. PDE2 and PDE9 mRNAs was present i

The transcription factor Nurr1 is a member of the steroid hormone nuclear receptor superfamily. Ablation of Nurr1 expression arrests mesencephalic dopamine neuron differentiation while attenuation of Nurr1 in the subiculum and hippocampus impairs learning and memory. Additionally, reduced Nurr1 expression has been reported in patients with Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. In order to better understand the overall function of Nurr1 in the brain, quantitative immunohistochemistry was used to measure cellular Nurr1 protein expression, across Nurr1 immunoreactive neuronal populations.

The afferent projections from the prosencephalon to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus (MD) were studied in the cat by use of the method of retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Cortical and subcortical prosencephalic structures project bilaterally to the MD. The cortical afferents originate mainly in the ipsilateral prefrontal cortex. The premotor, prelimbic, anterior limbic, and insular agranular cortical areas are also origins of consistent projections to the MD. The motor cortex, insular granular area, and some other cortical association areas may be the source of cortical co

Math learning difficulty (MLD) is a learning disorder characterized by persistent impairments in the understanding and application of numbers independent of intelligence or schooling. The current study aims to review existing neuroimaging studies to characterize the neurobiological basis in MLD for their quantity and arithmetic dysfunctions. We identified a total of 24 studies with 728 participants through the literature. Using the activation likelihood estimate (ALE) method, we found that the most consistent neurobiological dysfunction in MLD was observed in the right intraparietal sulcus (IP

Novel and valuable objects are motivationally attractive for animals including primates. However, little is known about how novelty and value processing is organized across the brain. We used fMRI in macaques to map brain responses to visual fractal patterns varying in either novelty or value dimensions and compared the results with the structure of functionally connected brain networks determined at rest. The results show that different brain networks possess unique combinations of novelty and value coding. One network identified in the ventral temporal cortex preferentially encoded object no

Material is presented from the case history of a patient whose interest in spelunking (cave exploration) was found to be an unconscious expression of a type of counterclaustrophobia. Both oedipal and preoedipal determinants of the claustrophobic anxieties are delineated. Of particular note in this instance is the testicular element in the genesis of the patient's claustrophobia. His confusion of the movements of his testicles into his inguinal canals during childhood defecation with the movements of the feces themselves lent an special intensity to his fear of being flushed away from the mothe

A 30-year-old woman suffered from a progressive extrapyramidal syndrome, myoclonic jerks, spasticity, and organic brain syndrome; she was clinically suspected to suffer from Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and died after 4 years of illness. At autopsy, widespread dystrophic axons and Lewy bodies (LBs) were found in her brain. Neuronal loss and diffuse reactive astrogliosis involved the gray matter including the cerebral cortex. Dystrophic axons occurred throughout the nervous system except for the cerebellar cortex and peripheral nerves. LBs involved the cerebral cortex as well as subcortical region

We report three siblings, two of whom had a neuropathological study, with a new subtype of congenital ponto-cerebellar atrophy (PCH). In addition to the brain stem and cerebellar anomalies common to all types of this heterogeneous condition, there were unique developmental defects in the telencephalon: absence of the claustrum, diffuse cortical changes particularly in the insula and an extremely small brain. In an attempt to shed some light on the pathogenesis of this developmental disorder, we have analyzed the pattern of brain stem and cerebellar abnormalities in ours and in previously repor

Data obtained by using various experimental approaches suggest that in the mammalian brain, most neurons within the visual system projecting to the striate cortex employ excitatory amino acids as transmitters. In order to investigate further the neurotransmitter phenotype of the ipsilateral afferents to area 17 of the cat, we have injected D-[3H]-aspartate, a retrograde tracer which selectively reveals putative glutamatergic and/or aspartatergic pathways, into this area. Retrogradely labelled neurons were observed in the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, visual claustrum, cortical areas 18, 1

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is an emerging minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of deep intracranial lesions. Insular lesions are challenging to treat because of the risk of damaging important surrounding structures. The precise knowledge of the neural structures that are at risk along the trajectory and during the ablation is essential to reduce associated complications. This study aims to describe the relevant anatomy of the anterior frontal LITT trajectory to the insular region by using sectional anatomy and fiber dissect

An outbreak of acute encephalopathy among 6 patients with renal dysfunction after eating "Sugihiratake" mushroom in the northern area of Niigata Prefecture was reported. All of the patients had varying degrees of renal dysfunction, and 3 of them were on dialysis treatment. Patients initially presented with shaking limbs and difficulty in walking. Several days later, disturbances in consciousness developed, which were followed by status epileptics. Four patients were put on mechanical ventilation for seizure control. Two of the 6 cases died. CSF examination showed elevated protein without pleoc

An outbreak of acute encephalopathy has occurred among patients with renal dysfunction after ingestion of "sugihiratake" mushroom (angel's wings mushroom) in the northern area of Japan between the end of September and the middle of October in 2004. Most of the patients had varying degree of renal dysfunction. Patients initially presented with asthenia in legs, shaking limbs, and difficulty in ambulation. Several days later, tremor-like involuntary movements or myoclonus developed, which were frequently followed by intractable status epilepticus. Eleven patients were dead. CSF examination showe

Golgi and combined Golgi-electron microscopic (EM) studies were carried out on cats in the terminal stages of GM2 ganglioside storage disease and the resulting data were compared with those from similar studies of other neuronal storage diseases in cats, including GM1 gangliosidosis. The results support the view that only limited types of neurons affected by the lysosomal hydrolase deficiency and subsequent intracellular storage have the capacity to sprout new dendritic-like growth processes from their axon hillocks, and that these neurons are essentially the same in all of these diseases stud

In Experiment 1, rats trained to avoid drinking in the presence of a compound odor (benzyl acetate) and taste (sucrose) conditional stimulus (CS) lost the taste habit but retained the odor habit following gustatory neocortex (GN) ablation. Conversely, olfactory bulb ablation resulted in loss of the odor habit but retention of the taste habit. In Experiment 2, rats lacking GN did not retain preoperatively instated learned aversions to a suprathreshold quinine hydrochloride (bitter) taste solution which had been employed as a CS. However, rats with GN lesions that were virtually identical to tho

Cells expressing mRNA for hippocampus-derived neurotrophic factor (HDNF/NT-3) or brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were identified by in situ hybridization. In the rat brain, HDNF mRNA was predominantly found in pyramidal neurons in CA1 and CA2 of the hippocampus. Lower levels of HDNF mRNA were found in granular neurons of the dentate gyrus and in neurons of the taenia tecta and induseum griseum. BDNF mRNA-expressing cells were more widely distributed in the rat brain, with high levels in neurons of CA2, CA3, and the hilar region of the dentate gyrus, in the external and internal pyrami

In major depressive disorder (MDD), not only the pathophysiology of this disease is unknown but also the mechanisms of clinical efficacy across its therapeutic strategies are unclear. Although neuroimaging studies adopted activation likelihood estimation (ALE) approach to identify the convergent abnormalities of human brain in the MDD patients, the common alterations after antidepressant therapies were not summarized. Thus, we extracted the coordinates of brain regions in the MDD patients that showed differences in resting-state function, gray matter morphometry, and task-evoked neuronal respo

Febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES) is a rare cause of new-onset refractory status epilepticus following a febrile illness. We report the case of a previously healthy three-year-old boy who developed focal seizures in the context of a confirmed Influenza A infection, rapidly progressing to super-refractory status epilepticus. Initial investigations, including cerebrospinal fluid analysis and neuroimaging, were unremarkable. Despite early multimodal therapy with multiple antiseizure medications, continuous anesthetic infusions, immunomodulatory treatments, and a ketogenic diet,
