The Changing Climate and Pregnancy Health.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Climate change is the biggest public health threat of the twenty-first century but its impact on the perinatal period has only recently received attention. This review summarizes recent literature regarding the impacts of climate change and related environmental disasters on pregnancy health and provides recommendations to inform future adaptation and mitigation efforts. RECENT FINDINGS: Accumulating evidence suggests that the changing climate affects pregnancy health directly via discrete environmental disasters (i.e., wildfire, extreme heat, hurricane, flood, and drought)

Children and youth in the climate crisis.

This editorial is co-written by a developmental psychologist and a young climate activist. We start by showing how the climate crisis is imposing a heavy psychological burden on children and youth, both from experiencing climate-related disasters and from the knowledge that worse is to come. We then describe the global movement of youth demanding urgent climate action. We conclude that health professionals can support young people in many ways, but particularly by supporting their capacity to take action, raising awareness about the impact of the climate crisis on youth mental and physical hea

Climate, environment and transmission of malaria.

Malaria, the most common parasitic disease in the world, is transmitted to the human host by mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles. The transmission of malaria requires the interaction between the host, the vector and the parasite. The four species of parasites responsible for human malaria are Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium malariae and Plasmodium vivax. Occasionally humans can be infected by several simian species, like Plasmodium knowlesi, recognised as a major cause of human malaria in South-East Asia since 2004. While P. falciparum is responsible for most malaria cases, ab

Possible climates on terrestrial exoplanets.

What kind of environment may exist on terrestrial planets around other stars? In spite of the lack of direct observations, it may not be premature to speculate on exoplanetary climates, for instance, to optimize future telescopic observations or to assess the probability of habitable worlds. To begin with, climate primarily depends on (i) the atmospheric composition and the volatile inventory; (ii) the incident stellar flux; and (iii) the tidal evolution of the planetary spin, which can notably lock a planet with a permanent night side. The atmospheric composition and mass depends on complex p

Climate and genotypes of Pneumocystis jirovecii.

This study explored whether seasonal and/or climatic factors influenced detection of specific genotypes of Pneumocystis jirovecii. Between 1989 and 2001, 155 isolates of P. jirovecii were obtained from patients undergoing bronchoscopic alveolar lavage. For each isolate, the month and climatic conditions were noted. Genotypes of P. jirovecii were distinguished by polymorphisms in the mitochondrial large-subunit rRNA gene. There were monthly and seasonal variations in the frequency of detection of mixed genotypes (p 0.018 and p 0.031, respectively) and genotype 2 (p 0.029 and p 0.086, respective

West Nile virus and the climate.

West Nile virus is transmitted by urban-dwelling mosquitoes to birds and other animals, with occasional "spillover" to humans. While the means by which West Nile virus was introduced into the Americas in 1999 remain unknown, the climatic conditions that amplify diseases that cycle among urban mosquitoes, birds, and humans are warm winters and spring droughts. This information can be useful in generating early warning systems and mobilizing timely and the most environmentally friendly public health interventions. The extreme weather conditions accompanying long-term climate change may also be c

Climatic droplet keratopathy in leprosy.

An atypical gross form of climatic droplet keratopathy (CDK) occurring in the cornea of 24 eyes of 17 leprosy patients is described. The CDKs were situated in the lower outer quadrant of the cornea and were not associated with trauma, scars or vascularization. All patients, except one, belonged to the lepromatous group. Fifteen of the 24 eyes with this form of CDK had impaired corneal sensation. We suggest that this form of CDK is a distinctive condition found among lepromatous leprosy patients with possible infection and involvement of the corneal nerves.

Improving operational resilience against climate change.

This paper addresses the urgent need for organisations to strengthen operational resilience in response to the escalating effects of climate change, highlighted by the record-breaking temperatures and severe weather events of recent years. It presents a comprehensive, practical framework designed to help businesses anticipate, adapt to, and recover from climate-related disruptions. The paper covers critical topics including advanced climate risk assessment - distinguishing physical, transition, and liability risks - adaptation of organisational structures, workforce empowerment, robust stakeho

Evolutionary consequences of extreme climate events.

Extreme climate events, such as storms, droughts or cold waves, wreak havoc on human and natural systems, but they can also catalyze rapid evolutionary change. Because such extreme events have historically been rare and difficult to forecast, studies of their biological impacts have mostly been serendipitous, limiting our understanding of their evolutionary consequences. However, with extreme climate events now increasing in frequency and severity due to human-induced global change, the opportunity - and need - to study their evolutionary consequences has grown. Drawing on a set of case studie

Climate change and children's respiratory health.

Climate change has significant consequences for children's respiratory health. Rising temperatures and extreme weather events increase children's exposure to allergens, mould, and air pollutants. Children are particularly vulnerable to these airborne particles due to their higher ventilation per unit of body weight, more frequent mouth breathing, and outdoor activities. Children with asthma and cystic fibrosis are at particularly high risk, with increased risks of exacerbation, but the effects of climate change could also be observed in the general population, with a risk of impaired lung deve

Climate change and harmful benthic microalgae.

Sea surface temperatures in the world's oceans are projected to warm by 0.4-1.4 °C by mid twenty-first century causing many tropical and sub-tropical harmful dinoflagellate genera like Gambierdiscus, Fukuyoa and Ostreopsis (benthic harmful algal bloom species, BHABs) to exhibit higher growth rates over much of their current geographic range, resulting in higher population densities. The primary exception to this trend will be in the tropics where temperatures exceed species-specific upper thermal tolerances (30-31 °C) beyond which growth slows significantly. As surface waters warm, migration t

Chikungunya, climate change, and human rights.

Chikungunya is a re-emerging arbovirus that causes significant morbidity and some mortality. Global climate change leading to warmer temperatures and changes in rainfall patterns allow mosquito vectors to thrive at altitudes and at locations where they previously have not, ultimately leading to a spread of mosquito-borne diseases. While mutations to the chikungunya virus are responsible for some portion of the re-emergence, chikungunya epidemiology is closely tied with weather patterns in Southeast Asia. Extrapolation of this regional pattern, combined with known climate factors impacting the

Climate/chemistry feedbacks and biogenic emissions.

The oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere is affected by anthropogenic emissions and is projected to change in the future. Model calculations indicate that the change in surface ozone at some locations could be large and have significant implications for human health. The calculations depend on the precise scenarios used for the anthropogenic emissions and on the details of the feedback processes included in the model. One important factor is how natural biogenic emissions will change in the future. We carry out a sensitivity calculation to address the possible increase in isoprene emissions co

Climate change and decreasing herbicide persistence.

A herbicide degradation model, using real weather data for the period 1980-2001, has been used to estimate the change in persistence of autumn-applied isoproturon over this period. The results suggest that soil residues fell to the minimum for weed control on average approximately 30 days earlier over the last 5 years of this period than in the first 5 years, equivalent to a reduction of approximately 25% in the duration of weed control. This decline in persistence is attributed to increasing soil temperature. The results are discussed in relation to recent observations and predictions on clim

Global climate change and infectious diseases.

The effects of global climate change on infectious diseases are hypothetical until more is known about the degree of change in temperature and humidity that will occur. Diseases most likely to increase in their distribution and severity have three-factor (agent, vector, and human being) and four-factor (plus vertebrate reservoir host) ecology. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes may move northward and have more rapid metamorphosis with global warming. These mosquitoes transmit dengue virus, and Aedes aegypti transmits yellow fever virus. The faster metamorphosis and a shorter extrins
