Submandibular gland surgery: an audit of clinical findings, pathology and postoperative morbidity.

A series of 86 patients who underwent submandibular gland surgery were reviewed retrospectively. Of the 92 glands excised, non-neoplastic disease accounted for 96% of cases. Preoperative clinical findings were inconsistent such that early surgery should be considered for an enlarged non-tender submandibular gland. The incidence of temporary paresis of the lower branches of the facial nerve was 36% with full recovery, on average, 4 months after surgery. The low 'non-identification' approach to the submandibular gland appears to be the technique which offers the least likelihood of permanent dam

Clinical audit of skin-to-skin contact and initiation of breastfeeding after birth.

Despite the well-established benefits of mother-infant skin-to-skin contact, the absence of immediate postnatal skin-to-skin contact and the separation of mothers and newborns appear to remain common practices in hospitals. This study was conducted to perform a clinical audit of skin-to-skin contact and the initiation of breastfeeding following birth. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 53 employed midwives and 265 postpartum mothers in two hospitals (Imam Sajjad and Shahid Akbarabadi) in Tehran Province. A census sampling method was applied. Data collection instruments included a demo

An audit on the assessment and management of osteoporosis in a Parkinson's and related diseases clinic in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and atypical parkinsonian syndromes are at increased risk of falls and should be actively screened and treated for osteoporosis. In 2024, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) revised their practice guidelines for diagnosing and managing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and men aged over 50 years. OBJECTIVE: We conducted the first Australian study to audit these guidelines in patients with PD and atypical parkinsonian syndromes. METHOD: We audited all PD, Dementia with Lewy Bodies, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy a

Gender and ethnic differences in pterygium prevalence: an audit of remote Australian clinics.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Developing an accurate picture of the demographic profile and refractive status of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal individuals with pterygium will facilitate health planning and appropriate deployment of health-care resources in rural Australia. BACKGROUND: To date, there is a paucity of reports in the literature regarding Aboriginal ocular health and refractive error. This study examines clinical data from a rural ophthalmology outreach clinic - a predominantly Aboriginal population. METHODS: An assessment was undertaken of data of 293 patients noted to have pterygium pres

Clinical audit in the pediatric primary care office and overweight prevention in toddlers.

BACKGROUND: Clinical audit is a process by which physicians or other health care professionals perform a regular and systematic review of their clinical practice and amend it, when necessary. An internal audit allows to review the activities carried out by professionals, in order to assess the appropriateness, effectiveness, efficiency and safety of the services provided. Aim of this study was to apply the process of clinical audit to the obesity/overweight care in toddlers. After the correction of the nutritional errors that were considered potentially responsible for the excess weight gain,

An audit on the management of lymphogranuloma venereum in a sexual health clinic in London, UK.

We performed an audit on the management of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) against the British Association of Sexual Health and HIV (BASHH) guidelines. Sixty-three cases of LGV were diagnosed in 60 men who have sex with men (MSM). Fifty-six out of 63 (89%) episodes were treated in accordance with the guidelines. Although all eligible patients were offered an HIV test, 10% and 29% of patients were not offered syphilis or hepatitis C tests, respectively, at the time of LGV diagnosis. Partner notification was not possible in a third of cases. Several patients were re-infected with rectal Chlamydia

Vitamin D status in patients with osteopenia or osteoporosis--an audit of an endocrine clinic.

Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency may further increase fracture risk in patients with decreased bone mineral density. We audited serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) concentrations in patients with osteopenia or osteoporosis attending endocrine osteoporosis clinics in North London between January 1998 and September 2001. The total number of patients analyzed was 448 (age range 17-89 years), with 191 patients being < 50 years old (42.6%). The following cut-off points for serum 25OHD were used: levels < or = 30 nmol/L for deficiency, > 30-50 nmol/L for insufficiency, and > 50 nmol/L for suffic

A multidistrict audit of the management of chlamydial PID in genitourinary medicine clinics in Yorkshire.

In response to recent reviews of practice of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) management, a multidistrict audit involving eight genitourinary clinics within the Yorkshire region was carried out. This audit reports the referral patterns of patients, physical signs and microscopy findings at the first genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic attendance, antibiotic treatment and follow-up data as well as health adviser involvement and partner participation for 68 patients diagnosed with chlamydial PID. Twenty-eight (41.2%) patients presented with symptoms of less than or equal to four weeks duration,

A clinical audit of glottic cancer in Nova Scotia: a paradigm for effectiveness research.

We conducted a clinical audit of the recurrence-free rates and absolute survival of 146 patients who presented with T1-T3 glottic cancer and received primary radiotherapy treatment at the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre between 1984 and 1990. The outcomes are compared with a review of published results from other centres. We used stage T3 glottic cancer as an example to illustrate concepts of effectiveness research which are used to determine at what level interventions operate in the day to day practice of medicine. The actuarial recurrence-free rates at 5 years are: T1 91%, T2 73%, and T3 44%. The

A single-center audit of a novel tonsil long-waiter outpatient clinic.

BACKGROUND: Outpatient waiting list figures have substantially increased over the last 3 years due to the effects of a global pandemic and cyber-hacking crisis. Multidisciplinary initiatives are essential to try to reduce the burden on overwhelmed medical and surgical specialties. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study is as follows: (1) to demonstrate the potential for a problem-specific clinic to help ease the burden on an overwhelmed specialty and identify high-risk patients who may benefit from earlier surgical intervention and (2) to provide supervised clinical training to our clinical nurs

A Quality Assurance Audit of an Orthoptic-Led Virtual Neuro-Ophthalmology Clinic.

INTRODUCTION: Neuro-ophthalmology is experiencing increasing demand. There is a lack of literature relating to how we deal with the capacity and demand issues, and the use of virtual clinics. Virtual clinics are well-recognised in other subspecialties to help deal with capacity and demand issues, with reports of non-medical-led clinics, and are supported by the National Health Services Long Term Plan and People Plan. We present a quality assurance audit of our orthoptic-led neuro-ophthalmology virtual clinic. METHODS: The virtual clinic was developed in October 2014 to help deal with capacity

Critical care in obstetrics: Clinical audit in the Republic of Ireland, 2014-2016.

INTRODUCTION: Admission to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in obstetrics is often used as a proxy for maternal near miss/severe maternal morbidity (MNM/SMM) events. Understanding incidence and management of pregnant or postpartum patients requiring critical care (CC) is thus important for continued improvement of maternity care. This study aims to describe provision of critical care in obstetrics in the Republic of Ireland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The national clinical audit on critical care included 15 of 19 maternity units in Ireland (2014-2016). 960 pregnant or postpartum (within 42 days) indiv

Clinical audit on assessment of non-glycemic parameters in diabetic patients by physicians.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a major health problem in family practice causing multiple micro and macrovascular complications; the prevention of which should be the main aim of treating physicians. Lack of proper assessment can hasten the complications and a meticulous screening system is a prerequisite in every diabetic patient's evaluation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of screening for non-glycemic parameters in type 2 DM patients by physicians in an outpatient setting. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a teaching hospital during Decem

A Retrospective Clinical Audit of the ImmunoCAP ISAC 112 for Multiplex Allergen Testing.

INTRODUCTION: Complex cases of multiple allergies can be particularly difficult to diagnose using standard methods such as skin prick tests and assessment of a patient's allergic history. Multiplex allergy testing may improve outcomes for allergy patients by avoiding misdiagnosis and providing reassurance. The ImmunoCAP Immuno Solid-Phase Allergen Chip (ISAC) 112 is a CE-marked, molecular, multiplex, allergy test that can test for IgE antibodies to 112 components from 51 allergen sources. However, its clinical utility is unknown and is difficult to estimate due to the complexity of the diagnos

Impact of timing of radiation therapy on outcomes in atypical meningioma: A clinical audit.

BACKGROUND: The role of early adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) in patients with atypical meningioma remains controversial. The goal of this work was to report the impact of timing of RT on outcomes in atypical meningioma. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients of atypical meningioma were identified through electronic search of institutional database. Following surgery, RT was delivered either in upfront adjuvant setting (early adjuvant RT) or after recurrence/progression (salvage RT). RESULTS: There were 51 patients in the early adjuvant RT group and 30 patients in the salvage RT group. Six of 51 (1
