Inter- and intraclutch variation in egg mercury levels in marine bird species from the Canadian Arctic.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic metal that has been of increasing concern in the Canadian Arctic. We measured total Hg in eggs of three marine birds (Arctic terns Sterna paradisaea, common eiders Somateria mollissima borealis, long-tailed ducks Clangula hyemalis) that breed in the Canadian Arctic, to compare Hg laying order effects from the same clutch and to examine Hg among species. Early-laid eggs of all three species had 24-48% higher Hg concentrations than late laid eggs. Arctic terns had approximately twice the concentration of Hg in their eggs as the two duck species, and Hg in eider eggs from

Seasonal variation in reproductive steroids of male and female yellow-blotched map turtles, Graptemys flavimaculata.

From April to October of 1996 and 1997, we measured seasonal changes in plasma testosterone (T) in male and plasma T and estradiol-17beta (E(2)) in female yellow-blotched map turtles, Graptemys flavimaculata, from the Pascagoula River, Mississippi. In 1996, plasma from females was analyzed for progesterone. In 1997, ovaries of adult females were ultrasound imaged to determine stages of follicular development. Males exhibited peak T levels in September and October of both years, indicating fall gonadal activity. Males also exhibited a low level spring peak in T during April. Female E(2) levels

Folate deficiency and over-supplementation causes impaired folate metabolism: Regulation and adaptation mechanisms in Caenorhabditis elegans.

SCOPE: Impaired folate metabolism increases the risk of birth defects, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and cancer. We used Caenorhabditis elegans to investigate impaired folate metabolism by RNA interference of key enzymes in the methionine synthase (MS) and thymidylate synthase (TS) cycle and by folate deficiency and over-supplementation feeding studies. METHODS AND RESULTS: Folate status is influenced by genetic variations (polymorphisms), folate deficiency and supplementation. Single RNAi of dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTH

Developmental, regenerative, and behavioral dynamics in acoel reproduction.

Acoel worms belong to an enigmatic and understudied animal lineage in the phylum Xenacoelomorpha. Sparse taxonomic and histological work suggests that these worms exhibit a diversity of reproductive anatomies and likely a corresponding diversity in reproductive behavior. Here, we study the reproductive life history of the three-banded panther worm Hofstenia miamia, an acoel that is emerging as a lab-tractable model system. Using confocal microscopy and histology, we describe H. miamia's reproductive organs, identifying structures previously unknown in acoels. Following a cohort of worms from z

Relationships between Endocrine Traits and Life Histories in Wild Animals: Insights, Problems, and Potential Pitfalls.

The endocrine mechanisms causing variation and plasticity in life history traits (e.g., development time, mass at birth/hatching, rate of postnatal growth, age or size at sexual maturity, litter or clutch size, annual survival, and lifespan) or fitness (annual or lifetime reproductive success) have recently garnered considerable interest. We review three issues facing studies that quantify relationships between endocrine traits and life histories or measures of fitness and describe possible solutions using insights from evolutionary ecology. We focus in particular on the steroid hormones gluco

Acute embryotoxic effects but no long-term reproductive effects of in ovo methylmercury exposure in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata).

Mercury bioaccumulates in terrestrial ecosystems as methylmercury (MeHg), yet little is known about its effects on terrestrial organisms, including songbirds. The authors used a model songbird species, the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata), to assess short-term embryotoxic effects of in ovo MeHg exposure on hatching success and posthatching growth and nestling survival, as well as longer-term effects on mating behavior and reproduction. Egg treatment groups included a low-MeHg dose of 0.2 μg Hg g(-1) egg (n = 36), a high-MeHg dose of 3.2 μg Hg g(-1) egg (n = 49), and a control (n = 34). Doses

Anatomy of the female reproductive tract organs of the brown anole (Anolis sagrei).

Female reproduction in squamate reptiles (lizards and snakes) is highly diverse and mode of reproduction, clutch size, and reproductive tract morphology all vary widely across this group of ~11,000 species. Recently, CRISPR genome editing techniques that require manipulation of the female reproductive anatomy have been developed in this group, making a more complete understanding of this anatomy essential. We describe the adult female reproductive anatomy of the model reptile the brown anole (Anolis sagrei). We show that the brown anole female reproductive tract has three distinct anterior-to-

Loss of Avian Intromittent Organs as a Sperm Competition Strategy: A Race to Be Last.

AbstractThe loss of the intromittent organ (IO) in the majority of birds remains unexplained. Here, I propose that IO loss results from sperm competition in the context of the unique avian sperm storage system. The first stage of fertilization is the movement of sperm through the vagina from the site of ejaculation to the sperm storage tubules (SSTs) at the uterovaginal junction. In a second stage, sperm are released from the SSTs and move through the uterus to the site of fertilization in the infundibulum. Last-male fertilization precedence can occur if sperm that arrive later at the uterovag

Active immunization against AMH reveals its inhibitory role in the development of pre-ovulatory follicles in Zhedong White geese.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of active immunization against recombinant Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) protein on the ovarian follicular development, egg production, and molecular regulatory mechanisms in broody-prone Zhedong White geese. For this, a recombinant goose AMH protein was expressed using a prokaryotic expression system. Fifty incubating geese from the same genetic background were selected and equally divided into two groups. The immunization group was actively immunized against the recombinant goose AMH protein, whereas the control group was immunized against

The relationship between mercury and selenium in the eggshell and egg content of the Whiskered tern (Chlidonias hybridus).

Mercury and its compounds do not have beneficial biological roles in living organisms. In contrast, selenium, within permissible limits, is an essential micronutrient and antioxidant. There is an antagonistic relationship between mercury and selenium. Therefore, the molar ratio of selenium to mercury is used as an appropriate index. Measuring the mercury in the environment without considering the protective effects of selenium does not accurately reflect the risks posed by mercury. This study aimed to measure the mercury, selenium, and the molar ratio Se:Hg in the shell and content of the eggs

[Reduction in variability of individual colonization programs in black-headed gulls (Larus ridibundus) leads to reproductive success diminishing].

The problem of adaptive significance of territorial antagonism in colonial birds is addressed. Many of these birds are characterized, along with high tolerance to each other and tendency to aggregate, by intensive and variable territorial demonstrations. Here we consider the effects of territorial behavior on the viability of a breeding colony. We observed breeding of black-headed gull in two colonies formed under the impact of a short-term temperature fall in 2008, which resulted in the 7-day shift in timing of egg laying. Compared with the colonies at the same places, one in 2007 and one in

Avian transgenerational reproductive toxicity test with in ovo exposure.

Ecological risk assessment of environmental pollutants requires effective laboratory assays and extrapolation of the resultant data to wild species. Because avian reproductive disorder and accumulation of persistent compounds in wild birds and their eggs have long been observed in polluted regions, we have developed an assay for investigating whether pollutants accumulated in eggs impair the reproduction of the exposed birds and the survival of the next generation using the Japanese quail. A typical estrogenic compound, diethylstilbestrol (DES), dissolved in olive oil was injected into the air

Chronic exposure to environmentally relevant levels of citalopram affects crawl-out behavior and morphological antipredator plasticity in a freshwater gastropod.

Citalopram is a commonly prescribed antidepressant and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). Low wastewater treatment plant removal rates facilitate its ubiquity in natural surface waters. In non-target organisms, SSRIs interact with evolutionarily conserved stress-hormone pathways alongside other neurological receptors to impact behavior, physiology and morphology. However, we still know little about the consequences of citalopram for aquatic invertebrates, including whether it impacts their ability to plastically respond to other environmental challenges. Thus, here we investigate t

Genetic tools for the study of the mangrove killifish, Kryptolebias marmoratus, an emerging vertebrate model for phenotypic plasticity.

Kryptolebias marmoratus (Kmar), a teleost fish of the order Cyprinodontiformes, has a suite of unique phenotypes and behaviors not observed in other fishes. Many of these phenotypes are discrete and highly plastic-varying over time within an individual, and in some cases reversible. Kmar and its interfertile sister species, K. hermaphroditus, are the only known self-fertile vertebrates. This unusual sexual mode has the potential to provide unique insights into the regulation of vertebrate sexual development, and also lends itself to genetics. Kmar is easily adapted to the lab and requires litt

Sex-dependent changes in the louse abundance of red-footed falcons (Falco vespertinus).

Permanent ectoparasites live in stable environments; thus, their population dynamics are mostly adapted to changes in the host life cycle. We aimed to investigate how static and dynamic traits of red-footed falcons interplay with the dynamics of their louse subpopulations during breeding and how they affect the colonisation of new hosts by lice. We sampled red-footed falcon (Falco vespertinus) nestlings (two breeding seasons) and adults (one breeding season) in southern Hungary. The mean abundance of Colpocephalum subzerafae and Degeeriella rufa lice on the nestlings was modelled with generali

Reproductive and developmental effects of transovarian exposure to o,p'-DDT in Japanese quails.

Avian species have the possible risk of embryonic exposure to persistent, lipophilic environmental contaminants, such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), by transfer of chemicals accumulated in mother birds to eggs. To model developmental and reproductive disorders of wild birds living in contaminated areas, we exposed Japanese quails in ovo to o,p'-DDT prior to incubation. A positive estrogenic substance diethylstilbestrol (DES; 1 and 10 ng/g of egg) and o,p'-DDT (1-100 microg/g of egg) were injected into the yolk before incubation. Treatment with o,p'-DDT (10 or 100 microg/g) but not w

Population differences in embryonic developmental timing in the lizard Diploderma swinhonis.

Geographic variation in reproductive timing can influence how embryonic development is partitioned between maternal egg retention and external incubation. We investigated population differences in embryonic developmental timing in the lizard Diploderma swinhonis by comparing eggs from Orchid Island and mainland Taiwan. Gravid females from mainland Taiwan and Orchid Island were collected and maintained under standardized laboratory conditions. Following oviposition, eggs within each clutch were sequentially dissected at 10-day intervals to minimize maternal effects and avoid pseudoreplication.

First natural breeding of the endangered dusky gopher frog (Lithobates sevosus) in captivity.

To date, all captive breeding of the dusky gopher frog, Lithobates sevosus, a federally listed endangered species, has been accomplished using in vitro fertilization (IVF). Here, we describe multievent and highly fecund captive reproduction of dusky gopher frogs driven solely by natural environmental factors. Six pairs of L. sevosus were kept in a 3.7 × 4.4 m2 outdoor enclosure designed to resemble their natural breeding habitat, which included a pool and three artificial burrows. Modifications to the enclosure that simulated temperatures and conditions within their natural range during winter

Optimizing the design of a reproduction toxicity test with the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis.

This paper presents the results from two ring-tests addressing the feasibility, robustness and reproducibility of a reproduction toxicity test with the freshwater gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis (RENILYS strain). Sixteen laboratories (from inexperienced to expert laboratories in mollusc testing) from nine countries participated in these ring-tests. Survival and reproduction were evaluated in L. stagnalis exposed to cadmium, tributyltin, prochloraz and trenbolone according to an OECD draft Test Guideline. In total, 49 datasets were analysed to assess the practicability of the proposed experimental
