Species-specific sensitivity of coagulase-negative Staphylococci to single antibiotics and their combinations.

The activity of beta-lactam antibiotics (oxacillin, cloxacillin, cephalotin), vancomycin, gentamicin and rifampicin applied in vitro individually and in combination against 37 nosocomial methicillin-resistant strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) was assessed to demonstrate the heterogeneity of this group of bacteria and estimate the chance of the efficacy of such therapy. The strains belonged to four species: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Staphylococcus cohnii, Staphylococcus hominis. They originated from a hospital environment and from the skin of medic

Coagulase-positive Staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus in food products marketed in Italy.

Staphylococcus aureus is a very common organism capable of producing several enterotoxins (SEs) that cause intoxication symptoms of varying intensity in humans when ingested through contaminated food. This paper reports the results of an investigation on the presence of Coagulase-Positive Staphylococci (CPS) and S. aureus in several food products marketed in Italy and on food contact surface swabs sampled from the food industry. A total of 11,384 samples were examined and 1971 of them (17.3%) were found to contain CPS. The assays performed on 541 CPS strains led to the identification of 537 S.

Survey of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci in the hospitals of central Greece.

A sample of 450 consecutive, non-replicated coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), collected from clinical specimens during the period 2000-2001 from the five major hospitals of Thessaly district (Central Greece) were investigated for resistance to methicillin. Most of the isolates had been collected in a sporadic fashion from the intensive care units and the surgical wards of the participating hospitals. The majority of the isolates (76%) were Staphylococcus epidermidis (50%), Staphylococcus haemolyticus (14.8%) and Staphylococcus hominis (11.1%). All 316 isolates (70%) were classified as r

[Incidence and antibiotic resistance of coagulase-negative staphylococci in a neonatal intensive are unit].

Coagulase-negative Staphylococci (CNST) are among the most common microorganisms found colonizing the skin and mucous membranes of neonates. They are also the most common cause of bacteremia in neonatal intensive care units. We analyzed the occurrence of CNST and antibiotic resistance of CNST strains. We have found 731 strains of CNST isolated from 428 intensive treated babies. Above 50% of CNST strains were resistant to: Erythromycin, Lincomycin, Tobramycin, Gentamycin, Kanamycin, Tetracyclines and Penicillins. We have observed the very high incidence of multiresistant strains. Majority of ou

[Non-epidermidis coagulase-negative staphylococci in infectious diseases of the compromised host].

Today Staphylococcus epidermidis has been recognized as the etiological agent of infectious diseases such as endocarditis, sepsis and meningitis that mainly come out in compromised hosts because of the breaching of the mechanical barrier (cardiosurgical, neurosurgical patients and central venous catheter carriers). Other "non-epidermidis coagulase negative Staphylococci" are more and more frequently isolated from patients at high risk of infection. Faced with these isolations, it is difficult for the clinician and the microbiologist to give these microorganisms their effective pathogenic role.

Plasmid analysis as an epidemiological tool in neurosurgical infections with coagulase-negative staphylococci.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from blood or spinal fluid during a period of 1 year in a department of neurosurgery, were analysed by biotyping, antibiotic resistance pattern and plasmid profiles. Altogether 41 isolates from 19 patients were studied. About 90% of the isolates were Staphylococcus epidermidis. The antibiotic resistance pattern seemed to be closely related to antibiotic usage in the unit. Most common was resistance to penicillin (63%), trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole (49%) and cloxacillin (39%) while resistance to gentamicin was seen in only one strain. In several cases

Reassessment of the coagulase and thermostable nuclease tests as means of identifying Staphylococcus aureus.

A total of 91 enterotoxigenic strains of Staphylococcus auerus isolated from foods and tested for production of coagulase and thermostable nuclease and the ability to ferment glucose and mannitol showed, with the exception of four strains, a complete correlation among these properties. A similar correlation was observed with 103 cultures of S. aureus isolated from clinical material. In all instances, the coagulase reactions were sufficiently strong to be scored at either the 3+ or 4+ levels. Presumptive staphylococcal cultures isolated during routine examination of foods and yielding 2+ coagul

Coagulase-negative staphylococci release a purine analog that inhibits Staphylococcus aureus virulence.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci and Staphylococcus aureus colonize similar niches in mammals and conceivably compete for space and nutrients. Here, we report that a coagulase-negative staphylococcus, Staphylococcus chromogenes ATCC43764, synthesizes and secretes 6-thioguanine (6-TG), a purine analog that suppresses S. aureus growth by inhibiting de novo purine biosynthesis. We identify a 6-TG biosynthetic gene cluster in S. chromogenes and other coagulase-negative staphylococci including S. epidermidis, S. pseudintermedius and S. capitis. Recombinant S. aureus strains harbouring this operon p

Resistance to methicillin of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) isolated from bovine mastitis.

The aim of this study was to determine the mechanisms of staphylococcal resistance to methicillin. CNS (n = 100 isolates) were prepared from the mammary inflammatory secretions of 86 cows from farms located in the Lublin region. Methicillin-resistant isolates constituted 20.0% of all CNS. Staphylococcus sciuri (n=8) and Staphylococcus xylosus (n=6) were most abundant, followed by Staphylococcus chromogenes (n=3), Staphylococcus haemolyticus (n=2) and Staphylococcus warned (n=1). The mecA gene was found in 50.0% of MRCNS (10.0% of all CNS isolates) belonging to two species: S. sciuri and S. xyl

Resistance of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from sheep to various antimicrobial agents.

Staphylococcal resistance to a variety of antimicrobial agents, defined as inhibition of bacteria growth in the presence of an antimicrobial agent, was approximately 75 per cent among coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from milk and the teat skin of sheep. Resistance to broad spectrum antibiotics such as chloramphenicol and tetracycline as well as resistance to the combination of trimethoprim/sulphamethoxazole commonly used for the treatment of animals, was high in both groups of isolates. Four isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis and three Staph xylosus isolated from the milk of dair

Adherence characteristics of coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from patients with infective endocarditis.

Coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from patients with endocarditis were divided according to whether the infection was of native or of prosthetic valves and was acquired either in the community or in hospital. Comparisons were made with strains from intravenous line-associated bacteraemias. All strains were examined by direct and indirect adherence tests. Line-associated bacteraemia strains were more likely to produce slime and were more hydrophilic but were less likely to attach HEp2 tissue culture cells than were endocarditis strains, and almost equally likely to adhere to plastic and

Prevention of central venous catheter-related coagulase-negative staphylococcal sepsis in neonates.

A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial was conducted to determine whether vancomycin added to parenteral alimentation solution given via a central venous catheter would decrease the incidence of catheter-related coagulase-negative staphylococcal sepsis. Seventy infants with a central venous catheter (CVC) in place were randomly selected to receive total parenteral nutrition--either the standard solution or a solution containing 25 micrograms of vancomycin per milliliter. Catheter-related sepsis was defined as the isolation of the same bacterial species from specimens of both peripheral a

Proposed virulence factors among coagulase-negative staphylococci isolated from two healthy populations.

Proposed virulence factors, including multiple antibiotic resistance and slime-mediated adherence, among coagulase-negative staphylococci colonizing healthy individuals from two different study populations were examined. Resistance to methicillin was more commonly seen than initially anticipated. In addition, adherence characteristics, as quantitated by a microtiter plate method, were very similar to those of strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci causing nosocomial infections.
