Prevention and control of chicken coccidiosis construction of recombinant Lactococcus lactis expressing chicken IL-4 and IL-2 fusion protein and its immune synergistic effect on chicken coccidia live vaccine.

Intestinal mucosa injury and loss of weight gain are unavoidable while using live vaccine strain to prevent chicken coccidiosis. In this study, recombinant Lactococcus lactis NZ3900/pNZ8149-IL-4-IL-2, expressing the fusion protein of chicken IL-4 and IL-2, was constructed using food-grade NICE expression system, trying to develop a possible oral immune adjuvant to enhance the immune effect of the live vaccine against chicken coccidiosis and minimize its adverse effects. Chickens were given different doses of recombinant L. lactis together with the live vaccine, then experimently attacked with

Genetic diversity of MHC and coccidial mitogenomes from fecal samples of the red‑crowned crane (Grus japonensis).

Non‑invasive fecal sampling coupled with molecular analysis is an established tool in avian research. Herein, we used this approach to investigate the polymorphism of the MHC IIB gene in Grus japonensis and obtained three complete coccidia mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) from fecal samples. We identified a total of 19 MHC IIB exon 2 alleles in 85 fecal samples, with 13 of them being newly discovered. All alleles had a length of 270 bp. The nucleotide diversity among the 19 alleles was 0.156, with 42 amino acid variation sites, and Grja-DAB*001 was identified as the common allele. The three

[The most important parasitic intestinal infections in calves and their role in diarrheal diseases].

Various stock breeding herds in the USSR were examined for the presence of endoparasites. Coccidia of Cryptosporidium genus occurred in calves at the age of 3 to 4 days to one month, individually in older calves, too. Coccidia C. parvum infected the animals aged 14-15 days most frequently. Coccidia of Eimeria genus and intestinal round worm Strongyloides papilosus were registered sporadically in calves aged 13-15 days; most frequently they occurred in calves aged 1-2 months and older. Of the total number of the examined calves (aged 20 days), which were infected by Cryptosporidium, 77.7 resp.

Parasitological examination results of zoo animals in Germany between 2012 and 2022.

Parasitic infections in zoo animals are a critical concern for both animal health and management. The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of endo- and ectoparasites among zoo animals in Germany. A retrospective analysis of the submitted samples of a diverse range of zoo animals (5768) from a ten-year period (2012-2022) was conducted. Overall, 31.1% of those samples tested positive for at least one parasite. In the examined samples, helminths (28.4%) were found more often than protozoans (10.3%) or ectoparasites (0.8%). Among the various animal groups the following parasites were fou

Impact of coccidial infection on vaccine- and vvIBDV in lymphoid tissues of SPF chickens as detected by RT-PCR.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at investigating a potential effect caused by coccidia on the immune response to vaccine- and very virulent infectious bursal disease virus (vvIBDV) in SPF chickens. METHODS: Two groups of three weeks old SPF chickens were vaccinated prior to inoculation with coccidia and challenge with virulent IBDV, all within a period of eight days. Two control groups were similarly treated, except that challenge with field virus was omitted in one group while inoculation with coccidia was omitted in the other group. Clinical signs, lesions in the intestines caused by coccidia,

Automated enumeration of Eimeria oocysts in feces for rapid coccidiosis monitoring.

Coccidiosis represents a major driver in the economic performance of poultry operations, as coccidia control is expensive, and infections can result in increased feed conversion ratios, uneven growth rates, increased co-morbidities with pathogens such as Salmonella, and mortality within flocks. Shifts in broiler production to antibiotic-free strategies, increased attention on pre-harvest food safety, and growing incidence of anti-coccidial drug resistance has created a need for increased understanding of interventional efficacy and methods of coccidia control. Conventional methods to quantify

What is Cryptosporidium? Reappraising its biology and phylogenetic affinities.

In raising the question "What is Cryptosporidium?", we aim to emphasize a growing need to re-evaluate the affinities of Cryptosporidium species within the phylum Apicomplexa so as to better understand the biology and ecology of these parasites. Here, we have compiled evidence from a variety of molecular and biological studies to build a convincing case for distancing Cryptosporidium species from the coccidia conceptually, biologically and taxonomically. We suggest that Cryptosporidium species must no longer be considered unusual or unique coccidia but rather seen for what they are--a distantly

Intra-phylum and inter-phyla associations among gastrointestinal parasites in two wild mammal species.

A growing body of literature reveals that the interactions among the parasite community may be strong and significant for parasite dynamics. There may be inter-specific antagonistic interactions as a result of competition and cross-effective immune response, or synergistic interactions where infection by one parasite is facilitated by another one, either by an impoverishment of the host's defenses, parasite-induced selective immunosuppression, or trade-offs within the immune system. The nature of these interactions may depend on how related are the parasite species involved. Here we explored t

Morphological, histopathological, and phylogenetic insights on a new calyptospora species that causes hepatic coccidiosis in a fish from the Brazilian amazon.

Calyptosporidae are heteroxenous coccidia with fish as their definitive hosts. Currently, most of this diversity is found in freshwater fish from the Brazilian Amazon region. The objective of this study was to perform an integrative taxonomy of a new species of Calyptospora in Cynoscion virescens (Cuvier, 1830), a marine and estuarine fish. Thirty specimens of C. virescens from the Eastern Amazon were collected and necropsied, of which 12 (40 %) were infected after microscopic analysis, which has revealed spherical oocysts measuring 17.8 μm in diameter and four elliptical sporocysts with 7.1 μ

Demographic, environmental and physiological predictors of gastrointestinal parasites in urban raccoons.

Raccoons are host to diverse gastrointestinal parasites, but little is known about the ecology of these parasites in terms of their interactions with each other during coinfections, their interactions with host physiology and environmental factors, and their impact on raccoon health and survival. As a first step, we investigated the patterns of parasite infection and their demographic distribution in an urban-suburban population of raccoons trapped in the summers and autumns of 2018 and 2019. We collected faecal samples, demographic data, morphometric measurements, and blood smears, and used G

Concurrent infection of enterocytes with Eimeria scabra and other enteropathogens in swine.

Bacteria were detected in the enterocytes of the distal jejunum in weaned pigs on Days 7 and 9 post-infection (DPI) with Eimeria scabra in addition to the developmental stages of the coccidia. Short rod-shaped bacteria were identified in approximately 60% of the enterocytes that contained developmental stages of E. scabra. No such bacteria were observed in cells where coccidia were absent. Gamonts of cryptosporidia were also observed within the microvillous zone of the enterocytes in the distal jejunum of weaned pigs on DPI 9 with E. scabra. Cryptosporidia were present only in enterocytes harb

Management factors associated with time-to-onset and fecal egg/oocyst counts of gastrointestinal parasites in heifer calves on Kenyan smallholder farms.

A prospective cohort study on zero-grazed smallholder dairy farms was conducted to determine factors associated with onset and counts of gastrointestinal parasitism in heifer calves. The researchers recruited 187 newborn heifer calves from 150 farms in Kenya. Over 16 months, farm visits every two months were used to collect rectal fecal samples and animal- and farm-level measures. Fecal samples underwent centrifugal fecal flotation with Sheather's sugar to determine counts of strongyle-type eggs and coccidia oocysts. Cox proportional hazard (Cox PH) analysis and mixed-effects negative binomial
