A 53-year-old man suffered contralateral hearing disturbance one day after acoustic neuroma surgery. Hearing function gradually recovered after steroid and hyperbaric therapy. Contralateral hearing disturbance after acoustic neuroma surgery is an extremely rare complication that can also occur after other posterior fossa surgery. The mechanism of this rare phenomenon remains unclear, but the patent cochlear aqueduct may be involved.

Branchiootorenal (BOR) syndrome is a variable, autosomal-dominant disorder of the first and second embryonic branchial arches, kidneys, and urinary tract. We describe the phenotype in 45 individuals, highlighting differences and similarities reported in other studies. Characteristic temporal bone findings include cochlear hypoplasia (4/5 of normal size with only 2 turns), dilation of the vestibular aqueduct, bulbous internal auditory canals, deep posterior fossae, and acutely-angled promontories.

BACKGROUND: Progress in surgical techniques in the temporal bone has lead to the demand of exact delineation of this complex anatomical region for preoperative planning. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of a three-dimensional T2 weighted turbo-spin-echo-sequence to depict anatomical details and pathological changes of the inner ear.
METHODS: Twenty-five patients presenting with sensori-neural hearing loss and/or vertigo were included in this study. A T2 weighted turbo-spin-echo-sequence was carried out on a 1.5 T imager, employing a surface coil with a diameter of 8 cm. The s

Enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome (EVAS) is the most common congenital ear anomaly that causes sensorineural hearing loss in children and may predispose a child to sudden hearing loss from sudden pressure changes or minor head trauma. We report a case of a 4-year-old boy with a history of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt and migraines who presented to the emergency department with parental and child care provider reports of acute hearing loss, without a history of trauma, infection, or hardware malfunction, who was diagnosed with bilateral EVAS. Diagnosis of EVAS occurs with specific temporal

In this review of cochlear otosclerosis 14 cases were studied by CT scan aiming to establish a densitometric pattern of the capsular foci and relating it to the hearing and vestibule dysfunctions. Severe demineralization with characteristics of probable activity (increased lucency of 30-40%) was demonstrated in the capsular foci. These were mainly cochlear with endosteal involvement (93%): large (64%) or discrete (29%). Cochlear otosclerosis was widespread in 64% of the patients, with coexisting foci in the semicircular canals (38%), vestibule aqueduct (43%) and internal auditory canal (43%).

The visibility of the vestibular aqueduct (VA) was examined using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 95 patients: 15 patients with Meniere's disease, 4 with vestibular Meniere's disease, 4 with cochlear Meniere's disease and 72 patients with other vestibular and/or cochlear disorders. In order to visualize the VA, the T2-weighted image (T2WI) and the proton-density weighted image (PDWI) were obtained in the sagittal plane with a head coil. The visibility of the VA was classified into 4 grades, i.e. grade 0 (not visible), grade 1 (partially visible with PDWI), grade 2 (partially visible with T

This pictorial review describes the application of high-resolution computed tomography to the investigation and pre-operative work-up of the common lesions of congenital hearing loss, including congenital aural dysplasia, various congenital ossicular anomalies, inner ear dysmorphology, large vestibular aqueduct syndrome, and congenital absence of cochlear nerve and labyrinthitis ossificans from previous infection. The aim is to help radiologists to provide a more accurate diagnosis of underlying aetiology and assist in surgical planning.

Identification of the inner ear malformation types from radiographs is a complex process. We hypothesize that each inner ear anatomical type has a uniqueness in its appearance in radiographs. The outer contour of the inner ear was captured from the mid-modiolar section, perpendicular to the oblique-coronal plane, from which the A-value was determined from CT scans with different inner ear anatomical types. The mean A-value of normal anatomy (NA) and enlarged vestibular aqueduct syndrome (EVAS) anatomical types was greater than for Incomplete Partition (IP) type I, II, III and cochlear hypoplas

PURPOSE: Our aim was to evaluate the relationship of the dimensions of the facial canal (FC) and cochlear aqueduct (CA) in otosclerosis (OS) with the type and severity of OS.
METHODS: Two radiologists retrospectively evaluated temporal bone high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) images obtained from 48 healthy individuals and 94 OS patients between January 2015 and July 2020. In the study group, the CA width, funnel base width, and funnel length, in addition to the FC transverse length, were measured in the axial plane. The CA length was measured in the coronal plane on HRCT images. The F

The majority of temporal bone radiographic studies are obtained either for middle ear and mastoid disease or in the evaluation of retrocochlear pathology. With recent technologic advances, diagnostic imaging of the inner ear has developed an increasing role in the evaluation and management of diseases that affect the cochlea, semicircular canals, and the vestibular and cochlear aqueducts. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) provides excellent detail of the osseous labyrinth, whereas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) generates images derived from the membranous labyrinth and its associated

The environment of the inner ear is highly regulated in a manner that some solutes are permitted to enter while others are excluded or transported out. Drug therapies targeting the sensory and supporting cells of the auditory and vestibular systems require the agent to gain entry to the fluid spaces of the inner ear, perilymph or endolymph, which surround the sensory organs. Access to the inner ear fluids from the vasculature is limited by the blood-labyrinth barriers, which include the blood-perilymph and blood-strial barriers. Intratympanic applications provide an alternative approach in whi
