[Study of unilateral auditory neuropathy in infants].

OBJECTIVE: To study neurophysiological characteristics in infants with unilateral auditory neuropathy (UAN). METHOD: Audiological measurements (acoustic immittance, stapedial reflex, EOAE, ABR, CM, MLR and ERP) and peripheral neurological tests were conducted and evaluated in 3 infants with UAN. All patients received CT scan and/or MRI examination. RESULT: Three patients had type "A" tympanogram. The ipsilateral and crossed stapedial reflexes were elicited in healthy ears, while those were absent in affected ears. Affected ears in 3 cases showed no ABR but normal CM and EOAE. All of them had

The effects of tone exposure on the inner ear functions in the guinea pig: impact tone vs. steady state tone.

The damage-risk criterion (DRC) for hearing supposes that sound exposure with equal energy implies equal risk for noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). We measured cochlear microphonics (CM), compound action potential (CAP), endocochlear potential (EP) and K+ ion concentration in the scala media, to see if the same level of Leq24h (impact tone and steady state tone) induced the same physiological changes in the inner ear function or not. Regarding the equal energy principle (EEP), we also examined if the EEP is appropriate or not at exposure of moderate level tone. We also checked how the time in

Human Olivocochlear Effects: A Statistical Detection Approach Applied to the Cochlear Microphonic Evoked by Swept Tones.

The human medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex was assessed by observing the effects of contralateral acoustic stimulation (CAS) on the cochlear microphonic (CM) across a range of probe frequencies. A frequency-swept probe tone (125-4757 Hz, 90 dB SPL) was presented in two directions (up sweep and down sweep) to normal-hearing young adults. This study assessed MOC effects on the CM in individual participants using a statistical approach that calculated minimum detectable changes in magnitude and phase based on CM signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Significant increases in CM magnitude, typically 1-2 dB

Experimental endolymphatic hydrops and glycerol. Electrophysiologic study.

The object of the present study was to evaluate electrophysiologically the therapeutic effect of glycerol on the cochlear function of guinea pigs in which experimental hydrops had been surgically induced. Fifteen albino guinea pigs were used. Each animal was chronically implanted to follow the evolution of hearing. The experimental protocol considered 3 groups of guinea pigs (5 animals each). Group 1 received no drug treatment, while groups 2 and 3 were given glycerol orally at 0.75 and 0.50 g/kg of body weight once a day for 4 months. The audiograms of the animals treated with glycerol showed

Reflex threshold shift in chinchillas following a prolonged exposure to noise.

The acoustic reflex is considered to reduce transmission across the middle ear and thereby protect the inner ear from intense sounds. The dynamic properties of this reflex seem to be a function of the duration of the eliciting stimulus. Assessment of the protective action afforded by middle-ear muscle contractions for long-term noise exposures requires the knowledge of how these dynamic properties change under such conditions. Round window electrodes were implanted in eight chinchillas. Changes in the threshold of the acoustic reflex were measured during an eight-hour exposure at 95 dB SPL to

[Lermoyez syndrome--electrocochleographic studies].

BACKGROUND: Lermoyez's syndrome is usually regarded as a rare variant of Menière's disease with hearing improvement and reduction of tinnitus during vertiginous attacks. Electrocochleographic studies of this syndrome are restricted to one published case up to now. METHODS: In our ENT department we clinically and electrocochleographically examined three patients suffering from Lermoyez's syndrome. These results were compared to those typically found in Menière patients. RESULTS: Two of the three patients did not show an elevated summating potential or increased ratio of summating potential an

Human medial olivocochlear reflex: Contralateral activation effect on low and high frequency cochlear response.

The role of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex has been investigated by assessing changes of cochlear responses (CR) in humans. The CR consists of pre-neural and neural potentials originating from the inner ear, and at high signal levels is dominated by cochlear microphonic (CM). The CM originates from the outer hair cells, where the MOC fibers synapse, and there is little research about using it to investigate the MOC reflex in humans. The current study aimed to investigate the effect of contralateral activation of the MOC reflex on the CR in humans. The CR was recorded in female adults (n

Effect of ethaverine hydrochloride on cochlear microcirculation.

The effect of ethaverine hydrochloride on cochlear microcirculation was observed in short-term experiments on 11 guinea pigs. In these experiments, the endocochlear PO2, endocochlear potential (EP), cochlear microphonic (CM) potential, and blood pressure (BP) were recorded. Endocochlear PO2 was measured polarographically by gold electrodes in the scala media. Ethaverine hydrochloride was administered by intravenous infusion for ten minutes in doses of 2, 5, and 10 mg/kg. These experiments demonstrated that ethaverine hydrochloride in doses of 5 and 10 mg/kg caused significant elevation of endo

[Enlarged and prolongated cochlear microphonics and its clinical significance].

Bilateral cochlear microphonics (CM) were evoked by tone burst simultaneously. A speaker was put in head-foot axis 2m from the mid-point of a given line connecting the bilateral external meatus. Seven normal persons and 106 cases of unilateral sensory hearing loss and recruitment were examined. When recruitment was present, CM at corresponding frequencies were enlarged and prolongated. In 62 cases CM delayed slowly, while other 27 cases quickly. In addition to 2 cases of bilateral Ménière disease with sensory hearing loss and recruitment, CM were enlarged and prolongated at some frequencies in

Effect of ear-canal air pressure on evoked otoacoustic emissions.

The effect of ear-canal air pressure on click-evoked otoacoustic emissions was measured for pressures ranging from 200 to -200 daPa and stimulus levels ranging from 60-90 dB PeSPL. Positive and negative ear-canal pressures (relative to ambient pressure) reduced the emission amplitude by 3-6 dB. A spectral analysis of the emissions revealed that the effect of ear-canal air pressure is that of a high-pass filter with a cutoff frequency of 2600 Hz and a slope of 4 dB/oct. The spectral changes are the expected effect of an increase in stiffness of the middle ear and were independent of pressure po

Alterations in oxygenation of cochlear endolymph during loud sound exposure.

The oxygen tension (pO2) of endolymph of the guinea pig cochlea was measured during exposure to loud sound (12 kHz or high-pass noise; 110 dB SPL up to 1 h duration). A small, but significant, steady decline in mean pO2 was observed after both pure tone and high-pass noise exposure. The extent of the change in pO2 varied from 0-50% in individual animals, compared with unexposed control animals. All exposed animals had an extensive loss of compound action potential (CAP) thresholds at frequencies of 8-30 kHz. However, there was no relationship between the extent of the change in pO2 of endolymp

Acoustic reflex decay in chinchillas during a long-term exposure to noise.

Reflex decay to 0.5 kHz octave-band noise at 95 dB SPL was measured in chinchillas during four 2-hr exposure periods separated by 11-min quiet intervals. Round window electrodes were implanted in six animals. Measures of acoustic reflex decay were inferred from amplitude changes in the cochlear microphonic generated by the octave-band noise. Reflex decay followed essentially the same time course during each exposure period. Vigorous muscular contraction to the signal onset was followed by gradual decay that asymptoted between 30 and 50% of its initial value. The process of decay seemed to be c

The effects of low-frequency ultrasound on the inner ear: an electrophysiological study using the guinea pig cochlea.

By examining 218 albino guinea pigs, electrophysiological methods were used to investigate the effects of low frequency ultrasound at moderate sound pressure levels after long-term exposure to the inner ear. From 10 kHz to 28 kHz, low frequency ultrasound below 100 dB SPL induced significant changes in cochlear microphonics, elevated thresholds and decreased maximum output voltage of action potentials and decreased absolute values of negative potentials of the endocochlear potentials.

The effects of intracochlear cyanide and tetrodotoxin on the properties of single cochlear nerve fibres in the cat.

1. Tuning properties and spontaneous discharge rate of single cochlear fibres in the anaesthetized cat were determined under conditions where millimolar concentrations of KCN were instilled into the scala tympani. 2. Short-term effects on the tuning properties were obtained, in which the threshold of the low threshold sharply tuned tip segment of the frequency-threshold ('tuning') curve (f.t.c.) was elevated by up to 40 db, without changes in the threshold of the low frequency 'tail' segment of the f.t.c., or necessarily changes in the spontaneous and maximally evoked activity. These changes w

Changes in cochlear oxygenation, microcirculation and auditory function during prolonged general hypoxia.

Changes in cochlear microcirculation and oxygenation and auditory function were examined in anesthetized guinea pigs during prolonged hypoxic ventilation (8% oxygen in nitrogen) for 1 h. Cochlear blood flow and perilymphatic oxygen partial pressure were measured using laser Doppler flowmetry and oxygen-sensitive microelectrodes. Auditory function was examined by recording cochlear microphonics, compound action potentials and auditory evoked brainstem response. Blood pressure and heart rate were monitored. During systemic hypoxia, the perilymphatic PO2 dropped on average to about 70% of the ini

Modulation of cochlear tuning by low-frequency sound.

An intense, low-frequency tone (about 30 Hz) modulates the sensitivity of the inner ear to high-frequency stimulation. This modulation is correlated with the displacement of the basilar membrane. The findings suggest that the modulation may also affect cochlear tuning. We have investigated modulation of cochlear tuning by low-frequency sound in the guinea pig. Applying indirect methods of measurement (narrow-band analysis of compound action potentials and compound-action-potential tuning curves), the results suggest a shift of the excitation pattern along the basilar membrane towards higher-fr

The Effect of Test, Electrode, and Rate on Electrocochleography Measures.

BACKGROUND: Electrocochleography (ECochG) is the measurement of stimulus-related cochlear potentials and the compound action potential (AP). Its primary clinical application is with the assessment of inner ear disorders. There are few studies examining the variability of ECochG measures. PURPOSE: The objective of the study was to examine the effect of test (i.e., initial versus retest), electrode (i.e., extratympanic versus tympanic), and stimulus rate (i.e., 7.7 versus 77.7/sec) on ECochG indices (i.e., summating potential [SP] amplitude, AP latency, AP amplitude, SP/AP amplitude ratio, and

Combined effects of acute lead acetate exposure and tone exposure of the guinea pig cochlea.

Lead acetate exposure to humans can induce various disorders of the cranial nerves. Although vertigo and sensorineural deafness have been reported in lead workers, the dose effects of lead acetate on the cochlea and eighth cranial nerve are not well documented. We investigated the effects of lead acetate on the male albino Hartley guinea pig cochlea by measuring cochlear microphonics (CM), whole nerve action potential (AP), endocochlear potential (EP) and K+ ion concentration of the endolymph. Animals were given lead acetate by intraperitoneal injection as 20 mg/week for 4 consecutive weeks. A

The effect of BAPTA and 4AP in scala media on transduction and cochlear gain.

We have injected by iontophoresis 4-amino-pyridine, a K+ channel blocker and BAPTA, (a Ca++ chelator), into scala media of the first three turns of the guinea pig cochlea. We measured the reduction in outer hair cell (OHC) receptor current, as indicated by cochlear microphonic measured in scala media evoked by a 207 Hz tone, and compared this with the elevation of the cochlear action potential (CAP) threshold. We found that in the basal turn, for frequencies between 12 and 21 kHz, CAP threshold was elevated by about 30 dB, while in the second turn, at the 3 kHz place, the maximum elevation was
