BACKGROUND: Pre-operative radiological identification of facial nerve anomalies can help prevent intra-operative facial nerve injury during cochlear implantation. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence and configuration of facial nerve anomalies and their concurrence with inner-ear anomalies in cochlear implant candidates.
METHODS: Inner-ear and concomitant facial nerve anomalies were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging and temporal high-resolution computed tomography in 48 children with congenital sensorineural hearing loss who were cochlear implant candidates.
RESULTS: Inner-ear an

Inhibition of cochlear amplifier gain by the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system has several putative roles: aiding listening in noise, protection against damage from acoustic overexposure, and slowing age-induced hearing loss. The human MOC reflex has been studied almost exclusively by measuring changes in otoacoustic emissions. However, to help understand how the MOC system influences what we hear, it is important to have measurements of the MOC effect on the total output of the organ of Corti, i.e., on cochlear nerve responses that couple sounds to the brain. In this work we measured

OBJECTIVES: One rare complication of cochlear implantation (CI) is facial nerve stimulation (FNS). The aim of the study was to analyze the location and insertion depths for electrode contacts causing FNS. The anatomical variance of the human facial nerve canal (FNC) was explored to elucidate the mechanisms underlying FNS.
METHODS: Data were collected from adults that had received a CI from a single tertiary care center. Medical records from 307 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The Uppsala human temporal bone library was leveraged to analyze anatomical structures relevant to FNS. Micro-

The bony cochlear nerve canal transmits the cochlear nerve as it passes from the fundus of the internal auditory canal to the cochlea. Stenosis of the cochlear nerve canal, defined as a diameter less than 1.0 mm in transverse diameter, is associated with inner ear anomalies and severe to profound congenital hearing loss. We describe an 11-month-old infant with nonsyndromic congenital sensorineural hearing loss with cochlear nerve canal stenosis. Next-generation sequencing revealed heterozygous mutations in MYH9 and MYH14, encoding for the inner ear proteins myosin heavy chain IIA and IIC. The

Cochlear implants encode speech information by stimulating the auditory nerve with amplitude-modulated pulse trains. A computer model of the auditory nerve's response to electrical stimulation can be used to evaluate different approaches to improving CI patients' perception. In this paper a computationally efficient stochastic and adaptive auditory nerve model was used to investigate full nerve responses to amplitude-modulated electrical pulse trains. The model was validated for nerve responses to AM pulse trains via comparison with animal data. The influence of different parameters, such as a

1. Single-neuron behavior in the cochlear nerve of neonatal (3-day-old) chicks was examined after exposure to a 120-dB SPL pure tone (0.9 kHz) for 48 h. Exposed animals were tested after 0 days or 12 days of recovery. Nonexposed chicks, age-matched to the exposed animals, formed two control groups. 2. Spectral response plots were obtained from each cell. These plots described the neuron discharge rates in response to 1,767 tone burst stimuli, each with a unique frequency-intensity combination. The tone bursts were presented at frequencies between 0.1 and 4.5 kHz and for intensities between 0 a

Patch clamp recordings were obtained from isolated cochlear efferent nerve terminals. Channel activity was found in 85% of membrane patches, was present in on-terminal and excised patches and was characterized to originate from a maxi-K+ channel. An average of 2.0 +/- 0.1 (N = 33) maxi-K+ channels were found per active patch. In symmetrical solutions, the current-voltage relationship was linear and the single-channel conductance was 221 +/- 5 pS (N = 22). The open probability of the maxi-K+ channel increased with depolarization of the membrane potential and with an increasing free Ca2+ concent

Oto-neuro-surgical teams of Bordeaux University Hospital operated at this day, 700 acoustic neuroma. A retrospective study of the 120 last cases has shown the facial function be abnormal clinically in 16% of cases and in 50% from the electrophysiological point of view. Immediately after surgery: 39% have normal function (grade I), 22% have partial palsy (grades II, III, IV), 39% have total palsy. With 3 months follow up these percentages improve to become respectively 53%, 34% and 13%. For the cochlear function, 28 patients had good hearing before surgery (average pure tone threshold less than

Responses of single units in the cochlear nerve and cochlear nucleus to tone bursts in a background of continuous white broadband noise were recorded. Tone and noise intensities ranged from threshold to saturation levels. Masking of the tone response by the noise was demonstrated by comparing peristimulus-time histograms and spike rates recorded during the tone and between tone presentations. The response of a unit to masking was found to be predictable based upon the difference in its rate of response to the tone and to the noise when the tone was masked. Several nonlinearities of the masking

BACKGROUND Aminoglycosides, a type of gram-negative antibacterial, are broad-spectrum antibiotics that are highly potent and have satisfactory therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of life-threatening infections. Our study aimed to establish a gentamicin-induced cochlear injury model and to investigate the cochlear nerve endings' recognition of ultrasound signals. MATERIAL AND METHODS A guinea pig cochlear injury model was established by intraperitoneal injection of gentamycin. Auditory brainstem response (ABR) and fMRI an affected cerebral cortex region of interest (ROI) of the cerebral corte

CONCLUSION: Children with CND received limited benefits from CIs and their results varied. The size of the vestibulocochlear nerve relative to the facial nerve could potentially be used as a predicator for CI outcomes in children with CND.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to (1) retrospectively review the outcomes of cochlear implants (CIs) in children with cochlear nerve deficiency (CND) and (2) evaluate the clinical usefulness of radiological findings as predictors for post-implantation outcomes.
METHODS: Study participants included 10 children with bilateral CND and profound sensorineural hear

INTRODUCTION: Symptoms encompassing sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo occur in many diseases of various origin. The diagnostics in such cases is especially difficult and often requires interdisciplinary cooperation. Despite of that many cases remain unexplained.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: The two cases with above mentioned symptoms (52 year-old woman and 46 year-old man) with differentiated clinical course were presented. The woman for one year experienced left sided, extreme tinnitus with paroxysmal vertigo and dizziness. The man with sudden monolateral hearing loss and tinnitus tha
