Cockroaches as Salmonella vectors: a systematic review and meta-analysis of public health and environmental impacts.

Cockroaches are significant mechanical vectors for bacterial pathogens, posing considerable public health risks in human-inhabited environments, such as hospitals, homes, and food-handling establishments. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the global prevalence of Salmonella contamination in cockroaches. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar were conducted to identify relevant papers published between January 2000 and December 2025. The searching process identified 31 eligible studies comprising 8,021 samples from 12 countries. The

An ovarian insulin-like peptide specifically regulates energy allocation and oocyte development in nutrition-restricted cockroaches.

BACKGROUND: Insects exhibit remarkable resilience and maintain high levels of reproduction despite frequently encountering nutritional restriction. However, the mechanisms governing their adaptive reproductive strategies under nutrition-restricted conditions remain poorly understood. The German cockroach Blattella germanica, a widespread urban pest, exhibits remarkable reproductive capabilities even in domestic environments where food resources are frequently limited. RESULTS: In this study, we demonstrate that the ovary plays a crucial role in promoting vitellogenin biosynthesis and oocyte d

Experimental transmission of Toxocara canis from Blattella germanica and Periplaneta americana cockroaches to a paratenic host.

The present study assessed the capacity of Blattella germanica and Periplaneta americana to disseminate and transmit infective phases of T. canis to rats, which were used as a model paratenic host. P. americana and B. germanica inoculated orally with T. canis larvated eggs shed eggs and larvae in their fecal matter during the first 6days post-inoculation. Larvae were recovered from the brain, lungs, kidneys and liver of rats that had been inoculated with either infected cockroaches or their feces. ELISAs of serum detected an increase of antibodies anti-T. canis excretion-secretion antigens, wh

Behavioral responses of German cockroaches (Blattella germanica L.) to gel baits under varying environmental conditions.

BACKGROUND: Gel baits are one of the most effective tools for managing German cockroaches (Blattella germanica L.); even so, it remains unclear how German cockroaches locate baits. To investigate bait perception by German cockroaches, we evaluated differences in trap catch after applying cockroach gel baits onto glue traps and placing these baited traps at various distances away from both harborages and arena walls in large (110 cm) diameter still-air arenas. In addition, we modified various environmental factors (access to food/water, harborage size) and evaluated the impacts of these modific

Antimicrobials profiling, biofilm formation, and clonal lineage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus isolated from cockroaches.

Cockroaches are widely recognized as vectors for transmitting pathogenic microorganisms in hospital and community environments due to their movement between contaminated and human-occupied spaces. Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), particularly methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), is a primary global health concern because of its capacity to cause a wide range of infections and its resistance to many antibiotics. Despite efforts to control nosocomial infections, the role of cockroaches in disseminating antibiotic-resistant bacteria has not been fully explored. This study aims to

Cockroach bacteriocytes migrate into the ovaries for vertical transmission of the bacterial endosymbiont Blattabacterium.

Diverse insect groups are obligately associated with and dependent on specific microorganisms as essential mutualistic partners that are usually maintained in specialized cells or organs, called bacteriocytes or symbiotic organs. Many organisms with symbiotic microorganisms have developed elaborate vertical transmission mechanisms, which are thought to be important for the evolution of intimate symbiotic relationships with microorganisms. One such case is the cockroach-Blattabacterium endosymbiosis, in which the symbiotic bacteria have been evolutionarily conserved and co-speciated with the ho

Improved chromosome-level genome assembly of the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana.

The American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, is a cosmopolitan insect notorious for thriving among humans undeterred by attempts to eliminate it. The traits that contribute to its ubiquity as an opportunistic pest, such as long lifespan, expansive neurosensory capacity, and nutritional flexibility, also make P. americana an excellent invertebrate model organism as evidenced by its long history in neuroscience and physiological research. Current genetic resources available for P. americana highlight its large, complex genome and richly diverse transcriptional capabilities, but fall short of p

Neuroarchitecture of the Central Complex in the Madeira Cockroach Rhyparobia maderae: Tangential Neurons.

Navigating in diverse environments to find food, shelter, or mating partners is an important ability for nearly all animals. Insects have evolved diverse navigational strategies to survive in challenging and unknown environments. In the insect brain, the central complex (CX) plays an important role in spatial orientation and directed locomotion. It consists of the protocerebral bridge (PB), the central body with upper (CBU) and lower division (CBL), and the paired noduli (NO). As shown in various insect species, the CX integrates multisensory cues, including sky compass signals, wind direction

Block of two subtypes of sodium channels in cockroach neurons by indoxacarb insecticides.

Indoxacarb, a novel insecticide, and its decarbomethoxyllated metabolite, DCJW, are known to block voltage-gated Na(+) channels in insects and mammals, but the mechanism of block is not yet well understood. The present study was undertaken to characterize the action of indoxacarb and DCJW on cockroach Na(+) channels. Na(+) currents were recorded using the whole-cell patch clamp technique from neurons acutely dissociated from thoracic ganglia of the American cockroach Periplaneta americana L. Two types of tetrodotoxin-sensitive Na(+) currents were observed, with different voltage dependencies o

Treatment of cockroach allergen asthma model with imatinib attenuates airway responses.

In the present study it was determined whether a pharmacologic approach to blocking receptor tyrosine kinase-mediated activation during allergic airway responses could be beneficial. To examine these responses, allergic mice were given a single oral dose of imatinib at clinically relevant concentrations, ranging from 0.05 to 50 mg/kg, by oral gavages just before allergen challenge. The reduction in the allergen-induced responses was significant and centered on reducing overall inflammation as well as pulmonary cytokine levels. In particular, the treatment of the mice with imatinib significantl

Association of recurrent wheezing with sensitivity to cockroach allergen in inner-city children.

BACKGROUND: There are numerous data that show a strong relationship between early exposure and sensitization to indoor allergens and the development of asthma and persistent wheezing in children. Most studies, however, have only examined the prevalence of allergy in children who have been identified as having asthma. OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence of positive skin test results to common inhaled allergens and possible association with wheezing in inner-city children being seen in a general pediatric clinic. METHODS: Skin testing to common aeroallergens was performed by the prick-puncture
