Multiscale dynamical considerations for modeling (biological) cognition.

Haueis and Colaço argue cognition must be modeled with metabolic constraints, challenging more abstract, computational views. This commentary supports their approach but identifies a key omission: multiscale dynamics. Cognition is fundamentally dynamic, emerging across coordinated timescales where metabolism is embedded, not merely constraining. Incorporating multiscale dynamics would strengthen their framework by aligning models with biologically realistic, time-dependent processes.

Art as a scaffold for social cognition.

The idea that art connects us to others is culturally compelling, yet empirical evidence linking art engagement to social cognition remains mixed across paradigms, methods, and timescales. We develop the thesis that art functions as a scaffold for social cognition, rather than a direct intervention on social-cognitive abilities. From this perspective, art structures the conditions under which social cognition unfolds by shaping whether individuals engage with socially meaningful content, how deeply they become involved, and whether they return to similar experiences over time. The scaffold mod

Segmentation as a bottleneck in numerical cognition.

Despite frequent appeals to the ecological relevance of number perception, number perception is typically studied using stimuli that differ greatly from real-world scenes. Consequently, it remains unclear whether numerical discrimination observed in controlled experimental settings operates under the same principles as it does 'in the wild.' In the present study, adult participants completed a number discrimination task with four stimulus conditions: (1) dot arrays, (2) dot arrays with visual noise, (3) naturalistic images, and (4) pseudo-naturalistic images designed to preserve object boundar

Learning and cognition in highspeed decision making.

It is widely accepted that more time and information yield better decisions. However, some decisions manage to be extremely fast and yet accurate. The trick of such highspeed decisions appears to be the use of simplifying heuristics that works well for the most common condition but lacks flexibility otherwise. Here, we describe an unexpected level of flexibility in a complex highspeed decision that is made faster than an Olympic sprinter can respond to the start gun. In this decision, archerfish observe the initial speed, direction, and height of falling prey and then use these initial values

The neural basis of transactive technical cognition.

Human societies are organized around the division of labor and cultural specialization. This organization is effective only if individuals can represent their own and others' technical cognition skills and adjust them according to the nature of the collaborative activity. We conducted a behavioral (n = 30) and an fMRI (n = 29) experiment to investigate these adjustments in two collaborative activities: Delegation and teaching. Here we show that, when individuals delegate a technical task to an expert, they partially disengage the technical reasoning network (left area PF, left inferior frontal

Brain, Cognition, and Psychoanalysis: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive functions and brain connectivity could be influenced by psychoanalytic psychotherapy (PP), thus representing neurobiological parameters for therapy-induced changes. This study searched empirical studies on cognition and the brain to evaluate which functions have been assessed, with which instruments, and what changes have been documented in brain connectivity after PP. METHODS: We used the guidelines and checklist of the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews. The literature search was performed on the Medline-PubM

Cognition in patients with post-bariatric hypoglycemia.

OBJECTIVE: Bariatric surgery, a highly effective treatment for obesity and associated comorbidities, may improve cognition and brain volume in parallel with cardiometabolic function. However, some post-bariatric individuals develop post-bariatric hypoglycemia (PBH), which can be frequent and severe. The impact of recurrent hypoglycemia on cognition in PBH is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine whether individuals with PBH display reduced cognitive function compared with postsurgical counterparts without hypoglycemia. METHODS: Fourteen adults with a history of Roux-en-Y gastr

New Horizons: Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone and Cognition.

Pulsatile secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is essential for activating and maintaining the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, which controls the onset of puberty and fertility. Two recent studies suggest that, in addition to controlling reproduction, the neurons in the brain that produce GnRH are also involved in the control of postnatal brain maturation, odor discrimination, and adult cognition. This review will summarize the development and establishment of the GnRH system, with particular attention to the importance of its first postnatal activation, a ph

Cognition and psychological wellbeing in hypopituitary patients.

Hypopituitarism (HP) frequently occurs in patients presenting with sellar masses and despite recent advances in therapeutic options, HP patients consistently suffer from impaired quality of life due to psychological distress and cognitive dysfunction. These neurocognitive complications tend to persist in spite of surgical or biochemical remission of the disease making it especially challenging to segregate the effect of HP per se from other comorbidities such as the effect of tumour, surgery, radiation therapy, or complications caused by excess hormone production. Regardless, there is ample ev

Amygdala function in emotion, cognition, and behavior.

The amygdala is a core structure in the anterior medial temporal lobe, with an important role in several brain functions involving memory, emotion, perception, social cognition, and even awareness. As a key brain structure for saliency detection, it triggers and controls widespread modulatory signals onto multiple areas of the brain, with a great impact on numerous aspects of adaptive behavior. Here we discuss the neural mechanisms underlying these functions, as established by animal and human research, including insights provided in both healthy and pathological conditions.

Functional neuroanatomy of cognition in Parkinson's disease.

While cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasingly recognized as a progressive symptom of the underlying neurodegenerative disease, our understanding of the functional and structural anatomic changes underlying these cognitive changes remains incomplete. Like the motor system, research point to a complex interplay between multiple parallel yet interconnected networks or circuits that are affected in PD and give rise to cognitive symptomatology. These circuits are most often studied in the context of disorders of executive function, and tightly linke to frontal lobe dysfunc

Social cognition and depression in adolescent girls.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Depression has been associated with alterations in social functioning. Decoding and understanding others' mental states and adaptive reasoning are important for social functioning. This study examined theory of mind (ToM) and socio-moral reasoning (SMR) in adolescent girls with and without depression. Within the depression group, we examined associations between relevant clinical features (depression severity, anxiety symptoms and borderline personality traits) and ToM and SMR. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted, whereby 43 adolescent girls (mean age = 1

GnRH replacement rescues cognition in Down syndrome.

At the present time, no viable treatment exists for cognitive and olfactory deficits in Down syndrome (DS). We show in a DS model (Ts65Dn mice) that these progressive nonreproductive neurological symptoms closely parallel a postpubertal decrease in hypothalamic as well as extrahypothalamic expression of a master molecule that controls reproduction-gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-and appear related to an imbalance in a microRNA-gene network known to regulate GnRH neuron maturation together with altered hippocampal synaptic transmission. Epigenetic, cellular, chemogenetic, and pharmacologi

Rehabilitation in Pediatric Stroke: Cognition and Behavior.

Pediatric stroke is associated with a range of maladaptive cognitive and behavioral outcomes that often require targeted intervention. Despite increasing research on neuropsychological outcomes over the past decade, evidence for effective therapies and interventions for the most commonly reported cognitive and behavioral challenges is still limited. The most widely prescribed interventions address more overt deficits in sensorimotor and speech/language functions, yet interventions for higher-order cognitive, linguistic and behavioral deficits are notably less defined. Moreover, concepts of reh

Numerical cognition in children with cerebral palsy.

Children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) often perform poorly in mathematics. It is not yet clear to what extent mathematics difficulties in this clinical condition are similar to those observed in developmental dyscalculia. To better elucidate this issue, we conducted an exploratory cross-sectional study with a sample of children and adolescents with congenital brain injuries and educational history of problems in Mathematics. Fifty students aged 7-15 years, of both genders (28 males) participated in the study, 31 with typical development (TD) and 19 of whom diagnosed with spastic CP. Nine had hemip

Profiling Social Cognition in Premanifest Huntington's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Discrepancies exist in reports of social cognition deficits in individuals with premanifest Huntington's disease (HD); however, the reason for this variability has not been investigated. The aims of this study were to (1) evaluate group- and individual-level social cognitive performance and (2) examine intra-individual variability (dispersion) across social cognitive domains in individuals with premanifest HD. METHOD: Theory of mind (ToM), social perception, empathy, and social connectedness were evaluated in 35 individuals with premanifest HD and 29 healthy controls. Cut-off value
