Feasibility Study Combining Art Therapy or Cognitive Remediation Therapy with Family-based Treatment for Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa.

Adolescents with anorexia nervosa who have obsessive-compulsive (OC) features respond poorly to family-based treatment (FBT). This study evaluated the feasibility of combining FBT with either cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) or art therapy (AT) to improve treatment response in this at-risk group. Thirty adolescents with anorexia nervosa and OC features were randomized to 15 sessions of FBT + CRT or AT. Recruitment rate was 1 per month, and treatment attrition was 16.6% with no differences between groups. Suitability, expectancy and therapeutic relationships were acceptable for both combinat

Innovative programs for improvement in reading through cognitive enhancement: a remediation study of Canadian First Nations children.

Forty-five Grade 3 students from a reservation school in Western Canada were divided into two remedial groups and a no-risk control group. One remedial group was given a classroom-administered cognitive enhancement program (COGENT) throughout the school year. The second group received COGENT for the first half of the year followed by a pull-out cognitive-based reading enhancement program (PREP). Children were assessed across phonological awareness, rapid naming, reading, and cognitive ability at the beginning of the year, mid-term, and at the end of the school year. MANOVA results showed a sig

The use of cognitive remediation therapy on a child adolescent eating disorder unit: Patients and therapist perspectives.

Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) is an intervention for anorexia nervosa (AN) that focuses on ameliorating the neuropsychological inefficiencies that underlie the illness. The current literature has reported promising results regarding its efficacy as an intervention for AN. However, there is a scarcity of studies considering the implementation of CRT in a child and adolescent population. This article describes an individual CRT therapy programme for children and adolescents with AN delivered on an inpatient unit for eating disorders. It considers the therapeutic process including the diffe

[Cognitive remediation therapy for children: literature data and clinical application in a child and adolescent psychiatry department].

The hypothesis of cerebral plasticity in psychiatric disorders has encouraged clinicians to develop cognitive remediation therapy (CRT), a new therapeutic approach based on attention, memory, planning, and mental flexibility tasks. The first cognitive remediation programs were developed and validated for adults with schizophrenia and were shown to have a positive impact on executive functions as well as on quality of life. In children and adolescents, researchers emphasized the existence of executive dysfunction in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autistic spectrum disorder, attention defi

Neuropsychological and Behavioural Short-Term Effects of Cognitive Remediation Therapy in Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive remediation therapy (CRT) aims to strengthen weak cognitive flexibility and central coherence in adult and adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN). Currently, there are no studies in adolescents with AN that control for learning effects because of re-testing while evaluating CRT. METHOD: Twenty in- and outpatients with AN aged 12 to 18 years received CRT. Assessment took place directly before and after the intervention. Performance was compared to 20 age-, gender-, IQ-, and test-retest interval matched healthy controls, which did not receive CRT. RESULTS: AN patients showed an

Readiness to change: Exploring clinical, cognitive and neural predictors of treatment efficacy following virtual reality-based cognitive remediation in mood and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality-based cognitive remediation therapy (VR-CRT) offers an ecologically valid approach to enhance real-world cognitive functioning in mood disorders (MD) or schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). This study investigated baseline cognitive, clinical, and neural predictors of VR-CRT response in MD and SSD. METHODS: Sixty-two MD and SSD participants were randomized to receive four-week VR-CRT or control with assessments at baseline, treatment completion (week 5), and follow-up (week 17). Univariate general linear models examined predictors of VR-CRT improvement on daily-

Effects of Short-Term Cognitive Remediation on Cognitive Dysfunction in Partially or Fully Remitted Individuals with Bipolar Disorder: Results of a Randomised Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive dysfunction is common in bipolar disorder (BD) but is not sufficiently addressed by current treatments. Cognitive remediation (CR) may improve cognitive function in schizophrenia but no randomised controlled trial has investigated this intervention in BD. The present study aimed to investigate the effects of CR on persistent cognitive dysfunction in BD. METHOD: Patients with BD in partial remission with cognitive complaints were randomised to 12 weeks group-based CR (n=23) or standard treatment (ST) (n=23). Outcomes were improved verbal memory (primary), sustained atte

Acceptability, engagement, and efficacy of cognitive remediation for cognitive outcomes in young adults with first-episode psychosis and social anxiety: A randomized-controlled trial.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a frequent comorbidity in first-episode psychosis (FEP) and may increase cognitive impairments. Cognitive remediation (CR) is an effective treatment for cognition, particularly in a group format. This study aims to assess the efficacy, acceptability and engagement of group CR on cognitive outcomes in FEP+SAD compared to group cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Participants with FEP+SAD were randomized to group CR (n = 45) or CBT-SAD (n = 51). They were assessed for cognition at baseline, post-therapy and 3- and 6-month follow-up. The CR group additionally comp

Behavioural pharmacology of the α5-GABAA receptor antagonist S44819: Enhancement and remediation of cognitive performance in preclinical models.

Previous work has shown that S44819 is a novel GABAA receptor (GABAAR) antagonist, which is selective for extrasynaptic GABAARs incorporating the α5 subunit (α5-GABAARs). The present study reports on the preclinical neuropsychopharmacological profile of S44819. Significantly, no sedative or pro-convulsive side effects of S44819 were found at doses up to 30 mg/kg i.p. Object recognition (OR) memory in intact mice was enhanced by S44819 (0.3 mg/kg p.o.) given before the acquisition trial. Mice treated with phencyclidine for two weeks and tested six days after the cessation of treatment failed to

Cinemotion, a Program of Cognitive Remediation to Improve the Recognition and Expression of Facial Emotions in Schizophrenia: A Pilot Study.

Objective: Patients with schizophrenia exhibit impaired social cognition, especially in the recognition and expression of facial emotions, aspects of communication profoundly interlinked in an embodied approach of cognition. Nevertheless, many training programs have been developed that focus on either of these deficits but not both. We therefore designed a training program, Cinemotion, intended to remedy the 2 deficits and investigated its feasibility and effects in patients with schizophrenia. Design: Thirty-one patients undergoing treatment for schizophrenia and presenting deficit in emotion

Cognitive remediation therapy in low-and-middle-income countries (LAMICs) for people with psychosis: a systematic review of its efficacy on functional and cognitive outcomes.

PURPOSE: Cognitive difficulties are commonly present in people with psychosis and are associated with poor functional outcomes. Evidence from high-income countries (HICs) indicates that cognitive remediation (CR) is an effective treatment for cognitive difficulties. Evidence from low and middle-income countries (LAMICs) is emerging. This study reviews the evidence for CR for people with psychosis in LAMICs. METHODS: Seven databases (GIM, SCOPUS, WoS, APA PsycINFO, Global Health, Medline(R), and Embase) were searched. Two reviewers screened the studies retrieved independently against the eligi

Thinking About the Future of Cognitive Remediation Therapy Revisited: What Is Left to Solve Before Patients Have Access?

In our previous paper on the Future of Cognitive Remediation published more than 10 years ago, we envisaged an imminent and wide implementation of cognitive remediation therapies into mental health services. This optimism was misplaced. Despite evidence of the benefits, costs, and savings of this intervention, access is still sparse. The therapy has made its way into some treatment guidance, but these documents weight the same evidence very differently, causing confusion, and do not consider barriers to implementation. This paper revisits our previous agenda and describes how some challenges w
