This industry-based randomized study compared the effects of behavioral treatment (BT) and blood pressure monitoring (BPM) on blood pressure (BP) change in 158 unmedicated persons with mild hypertension (diastolic blood pressure 90 to 104 mm Hg). Participants recruited by a three-stage screening were randomly assigned to BT or BPM groups and stratified by entry diastolic blood pressure (DBP), age, and sex. BT participants received relaxation training, with or without the addition of biofeedback, cognitive restructuring, and health behavior change components. During the study, all participants

The present descriptive study was aimed at evaluating posttraumatic and depressive symptoms and their cooccurrence, in a sample of victims of workplace accidents. Also, posttraumatic negative cognitions were assessed. Eighty-five injured workers were evaluated, using the PTSD Symptom Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory II, and the posttraumatic Cognitions Inventory. 49.4% of injured workers reported both depressive and posttraumatic symptoms of clinical relevance. 20% only reported posttraumatic, but not depressive, symptoms, and 30.6% did not report either type of symptoms. The group with bo

Sports betting products rely upon a balance between their knowledge and chance based structural characteristics. The emphasis by bookmakers on mastering the knowledge-based elements to become winners poses significant challenges for those seeking help for gambling disorder. Bettors find difficulties in integrating their preconceptions about the role of knowledge and skills in winning, into the new cognitive restructuring fostered by cognitive-behavioural therapy. Using a grounded theory approach, this study collected data from 43 Spanish sports bettors undergoing treatment for gambling disorde

BACKGROUND: Recent literature suggests that taking into consideration and evaluating preoperative expectations of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients candidates to deep brain stimulation (DBS), can contribute to treatment effectiveness. However, few validated instruments investigating preoperative expectations are available. We present the development and validation of the DBS-PS (Deep Brain Stimulation - Perception Scale).
METHODS: The DBS-PS is an 11 questions self-administered scale, with answers rated on a 10-point Likert scale (1 completely false, 10 completely true). Items were generated

This article examines the development of the Kind (Good) Parent mode in schema therapy and supervision. A narrative review of literature on schema modes, Healthy Adult functioning, self-compassion, and experiential methods is integrated with therapists' and supervisors' clinical experience. We define the Kind Parent mode, distinguish it from related modes, and describe how it manifests in self-communication and communication with others. We outline cognitive, behavioral, experiential, imagery based, and supervisory methods, including guided discovery, cognitive restructuring, role playing, cha

In this update of a previous review, the authors discuss cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This efficacious modality avoids side effects common to psychotropic medication and reduces risk of relapse once treatment has ended. Psychotherapy involves identification and ranking of stimuli that provoke obsessions, exposure to these stimuli while preventing compulsions, and cognitive restructuring. The family of the OCD patient plays a significant role in treatment. This article includes expanded research on family-focus

BACKGROUND: Dysfunctional depressogenic cognitions are considered a key factor in the etiology and maintenance of depression. In cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), the current gold-standard psychotherapeutic treatment for depression, cognitive restructuring techniques are employed to address dysfunctional cognitions. However, high drop-out and non-response rates suggest a need to boost the efficacy of CBT for depression. This might be achieved by enhancing the role of emotional and kinesthetic (i.e., body movement perception) features of interventions. Therefore, we aim to evaluate the effica

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that is based on the underlying assumption that mental disorders and psychological distress are maintained by cognitive factors, that is, that general beliefs about the world, the self, and the future contribute to the maintenance of emotional distress and behavioral problems. The overall goal of CBT is to replace dysfunctional constructs with more flexible and adaptive cognitions. The most relevant cognitive-behavioral techniques in clinical practice are: i. Cognitive Restructuring (also known as the ABCDE method) is indi

Anxiety disorders (ADs) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are two of the most common psychiatric disorders in youth and approximately 25% of those with an AD have comorbid ADHD.1 Children with AD and ADHD evidence greater impairment than those with either disorder alone, making them a particularly vulnerable population in need of effective treatment.2 Although a strong evidence base supports the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for treating anxiety in children,3 there is little information to guide practitioners on how to best treat those dually diagnosed with a

The present article reports the case of a delusional pregnancy that developed in a drug-naïve young woman affected by paranoid schizophrenia and Hashimoto-related hyperprolactinemia. The literature in this field has addressed the phenomenon of distorted thoughts of pregnancy being elicited by physical changes due to drug-induced hyperprolactinemia. The present report gives account of a case of delusional pregnancy that developed in a schizophrenic patient with concurrent hyperprolactinemia induced by a primary endocrine disease. In this instance, however, amelioration of delusional beliefs did

People living with HIV (PLWH) have a particularly high risk of mental health disorders and are also stigmatized in several ways; both of which can impact their quality of life and mental health. Mental health interventions for PLWH have been widely discussed in a diverse range of reviews; however, most were not conducted according to a systematic methodology. They describe themselves as narrative or non-systematic reviews. This study aims to investigate PLWH-focused Motivational Interviewing and cognitive-behavioral interventions through a scoping review of systematic reviews and reports on wh

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative condition characterized by significant cognitive decline. Recent studies suggest that the brain undergoes anatomical and functional restructuring, resulting in neuro-metabolic and vascular dysregulation (MVD) prior to amyloid-β accumulation, which begins at an early age and leads to the onset of AD. Using a retrospective clinical population (N=403) of subjects with varying disease stages from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), we identified that disease progression follows a stage-dependent MVD pattern, facil

Alcohol's cognitive effects exacerbate sexual assault perpetration by men against women. Emotion regulation interventions may reduce perpetration by modifying men's responses during sexual situations. The present study's goal was to examine how alcohol intoxication and emotion regulation interventions interacted to predict men's cognitive and behavioral reactions regarding sexual assault perpetration. Young men with self-reported sexual assault perpetration histories (N = 206) were randomly assigned to receive either a cognitive restructuring, mindfulness, or control intervention and to consum

OBJECTIVE: The feasibility and effectiveness of a combination of group cognitive-behavioral therapy and medication for the treatment of depression among gay men with AIDS or symptomatic HIV infection were evaluated.
METHODS: Fifteen patients diagnosed with DSM-IV major depressive disorder or dysthymia were treated in one of two weekly therapy groups in which cognitive-behavioral therapy had been specially modified for the target population. The majority of these patients, including two who had been on medication before joining the groups, also received antidepressant medication. Thirteen of t

The reliability and validity of the pilot National Board Dental Examination were examined. The results indicate that the pilot examination is a reliable test that assesses a full range of cognitive behaviors. Furthermore, the findings indicate that the pilot examination is a unidimensional test of comprehensive general dentistry. The performance of examinees on the pilot examination was found to be similar to their performance on the traditional Part II examination. These findings suggest that the restructured Part II examination will be a more reliable and valid measure of dental students' kn
