Evaluation for an observation effect in a prospective cohort study of oral health outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: Evaluation for changes in behavior due to research participants' knowledge that behavior is being observed (also referred to as a Hawthorne effect or reactivity) has received little attention in the dental literature. The Florida Dental Care Study, a prospective, non-randomized, longitudinal study of oral health outcomes, provides some inferential power to evaluate for an effect on dental care use due to participants' knowledge that this behavior was being observed. The purpose of this paper is to document that an observation effect can occur in dental studies, and to estimate its

Preconception vs. postconception iodine supplementation: Effect on thyroglobulin decline in a Québec pregnancy cohort.

BACKGROUND: Meeting the increased iodine needs in pregnancy is vital, as deficiency, especially early on, can cause irreversible cognitive impairment of the infant. The American Thyroid Association advises that women who are planning a pregnancy should begin taking a daily iodine supplement containing 150 µg of iodine at least three months before conception to meet iodine needs in early pregnancy. Recently, it was reported that just 36% of women in a Québec pregnancy cohort initiated iodine supplementation before conception. OBJECTIVES: Using thyroglobulin (Tg) as a sensitive, functional mark

Effect of Spherical Adsorptive Carbon Among Chronic Kidney Disease Patients: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

Spherical Adsorptive Carbon (SAC), a type of oral sorbent, is prescribed to chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients to remove uremic toxins. However, evidence regarding its effectiveness in delaying chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression remains insufficient. We aimed to evaluate the impact of SAC on CKD progression in patients with CKD stage 3 or higher using nationwide data. In this retrospective cohort study, we included patients diagnosed with CKD stage ≥3 from the Korea National Health Insurance System database between January 2020 and December 2022. Outcomes were compared between SAC use

Effect of remimazolam in non-intubated video-assisted thoracic surgery: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Single-incision video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is safer, more efficient, and less invasive, with fewer complications and shorter hospital stays. When combined with non-intubated spontaneous breathing, it enhances recovery by reducing complications, operating time, and anesthesia duration. Remimazolam, an ultrashort-acting benzodiazepine, provides rapid onset and offset with minimal respiratory depression, making it promising for non-intubated VATS (NIVATS). METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan, and included 62 pat

Short-term effect of iodine contrast medium on thyroid function: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Excess iodine intake due to iodinated contrast media (ICM) infusion during medical examinations is considered as a potential cause of thyroid abnormalities. However, the short-term effects of ICM exposure on patients in a Chinese population are not well elucidated. METHODS: In total, 200 patients who received intravenous ICM were enrolled, and their thyroid function was determined before ICM exposure (baseline) as well as 1 week and 1 month after the ICM infusion. The relationship between the peak urinary iodine concentration (UIC) and the contrast agent (CA) dose was then investi

Effect of intraoperative administration of magnesium on residual neuromuscular blockade: a retrospective cohort study.

Magnesium has been used as an adjuvant to general anaesthesia owing to its multiple benefits, including potentiating the action of rocuronium. However, magnesium may affect neostigmine-induced neuromuscular blockade recovery. The effects of intraoperative magnesium administration on residual neuromuscular blockade (RNMB) were investigated. This retrospective study reviewed the data of adult patients who underwent general anaesthesia with rocuronium as the neuromuscular blocking agent and neostigmine as the reversal agent, between 2018 and 2020. RNMB was defined as the administration of an addi

Effect of Dialysate and Plasma Sodium on Mortality in a Global Historical Hemodialysis Cohort.

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: This large observational cohort study aimed to investigate the relationship between dialysate and plasma sodium concentrations and mortality among maintenance hemodialysis patients. Using a large multinational cohort of 68,196 patients, we found that lower dialysate sodium concentrations (≤138 mmol/L) were independently associated with higher mortality compared with higher dialysate sodium concentrations (>138 mmol/L). The risk of death was lower among patients exposed to higher dialysate sodium concentrations, regardless of plasma sodium levels. These results challenge
